Meanwhile I'm dealing with the Ausländerbehörde again and these people keep managing to limbo below my already extremely low expectation. Nothing like dealing with extremely understaffed yet extremely important bureaucratic processes to crush any joie de vivre I might have had.  I found out I managed to move into one of the districts of Hamburg with the absolute worst Ausländerbehörde in the entire city. For reference, I lived in Eimsbüttel in the past and while the Ausländerbehörde there was unpleasant, everyone was rude and they literally mishandled our documents and blamed us until we called my husband's employer to yell at them ... Wandsbek is apparently worse! Turns out that in Wandsbek, you gotta do the classic "stand in line at 2 in the night to maybe get a Wartenummer at 8". You cannot book appointments via phone or in person. I found that out by being insulted on the phone by an employee who was self-loathing made flesh. So, you either do the waiting thing or you book an appointment online, at a very deeply buried link on the stupidly confusing hamburg.de website ... except the appointments can only be booked up to 14 days in advance and no appointments are ever open no matter when you check. They tell people to refresh at midnight and you still get nothing. Basically you either refresh at the exact right second to grab an appointment or you are poo poo out of luck, friendo. Booking Wacken tickets is a walk in the park by comparision. For reference, my husband worked in Berlin for the last 3 years and got his previous visa extension there, and during that time they legitimately upgraded their system. He got an appointment for 2 months away, they extended his visa to that day automatically, and once we were there in person stuff went really quickly and the employees were actually friendly and didn't act like they ran on their all consuming hatred for the entire human race. Berlin can somehow step up its game and Hamburg can't - Rot-Grün claims they totes improved the situation, for realsies. They also claimed to have opened another Kundenzentrum in Wandsbek ... which they closed last year because there was supposedly no need anymore.  So yeah I'm going to spend my night in front of the Ausländerbehörde, waiting to get the privilege to wait more. Wish me luck that I at least get that privilege because my husband needs his visa extended and not being able to even book an appointment for that online makes that a very shaky proposal. TL;DR: gently caress every single person who claims this process is remotely fair, acceptable or humane. I struggled to get all the info necessary and I'm a German native speaker with experience in German bureaucratic fuckery. How do they expect any foreigner to handle this? The answer is they don't, because they are racist assholes. gently caress them.

Yeah Berlin was shockingly nice when I went there with him. Trust me, I was as surprised as you. I wouldn't claim it's perfect or anything but he got an online appointment no problem, got a Fiktionsbescheinigung for it no problem, and once it was time to go there in person we got seen within 10 minutes of the appointment time. Even the actual employee was friendly and explained things well, and the whole process of getting an extension took like 10 minutes. It was heavenly. Bureaucracy is one of the things that rules about small towns - I'm personally sick of living in a town dying a painful slow death to urbanization, but what was great there were the Behörden. I had issues with my tax filing once and I got legitimately friendly help at the Finanzamt with zero trouble. People in those small towns seem to be more chill and not horribly overworked, which helps a ton with the attitude, surprise surprise! Good call on the museums thing. That lead me to this map of places with AC in Berlin which is pretty decent. It doesn't show the Technikmuseum, but apparently their new building does have AC, according to their website.

Was gonna ask if there was a kälte karte for other places but lmao I work nightshift on sunday. Which means I have to start working at like 5:30PM when presumably the heat is at it's worst. So I guess what I am asking is: Is there a kälte karte for other places and which of those places would be the easiest to steal an AC for because this tiny office fan won't save me from the heat (Though it would be hilarious if word of museums having free AC got around enough that our local one got completely filled up. If nothing else I should tell my Pokemon Go local group because the idea of them fighting over the museum gym while stuck inside for several hours is hilarious)
