Doesnt every Fire Emblem do this in some fashion? At the beginning you always some super powerful units while your main guy is squishy

To a greater or lesser degree, but you can honestly get away with not using them usually. Radiant Dawn sets up the missions with the Black Knight so you're almost assuredly forced to use him.

Just got to hope for some sort of Granzella/Irem situation and hope it doesn't take as long as it did for them to start making stuff.

Isn't the game in one of those rights limbos where several companies own bits of the license?

Edit: \/ I was thinking of the NA publisher Midway who got split into pieces after their bankruptcy.

No, the publisher just shifted to just making pachinko machines and they've been sitting on the rights ever since.

the chapter in mother 3 where you've just got salsa and the uncontrollable fassad is super cool

for more recent stuff, xenoblade 2 starts you off with the two main antagonists as party members. and being escorted by more powerful (hopefully) npcs is a big part of ophilia and primrose's gimmick in octopath traveler

I'm not doubting you but what exactly does come online mean? Is it another MMO like .Hack or something? As for your other points, I like when that's better reflected. A well known powerful mercenary being a whole level 4 always kinda sticks out to me.

Joke's on them! I picked the scholar guy, so my party for a while was Squishy Wizard, Squishy Healer, and Squishy Dancer. I did have all of the magic elements covered quite handily, though.

If you're gonna consider that then all of WA4 counts since Raquel basically carries the entire party all the way through that game.

yeah it's that the other characters' powers don't really come into their own for a while. like they're all useful in their own way, but virginia of course doesn't become an overpowered god until you have infinite Full Carrots, at which point she is your main support carry for the rest of the game, nobody else can do anything without her. gallows' power is great but in the beginning of the game Extend only really targets groups of enemies so its usefulness is overshadowed by regular summons, which anyone can do, but once you get to the midgame, buffs and debuffs become pretty swingy and he can Extend that to your entire party instead of spending four rounds giving everyone just one buff, that kind of thing.

meanwhile clive is one shotting everything and then Lock On increases his damage even further, and if he gets a crit with that he'll even one shot bosses.

Yeah, but they usually put it on the fastest character, where it's kinda redundant. Ashley in 2 had the best use of it, IMO, because he was a middle of the road character in terms of speed. But he also got his Level 4 early, so you almost always wanted to use that instead, especially in boss battles.

not to mention that iirc using Accelerate + Sword Art with Jack would often give you some kind of secondary effect on the attacks, like status effects or aoe (or was this just in AC:F? if so then it's the one thing it did right lol). plus the buff spells are percentage-based, so casting spd up on Jet gave him so much speed that nothing in the entire game could ever outrun him, and that was by lv30

That was ACF, but Jack's Level 3 Force power in the original was "go first and deal more damage" and his Level 4 was "go first and act twice" IIRC, so they at least managed to put some twists on Accelerate even in the first game.

i guess, but bonus% attack power is really only good when you have a howitzer like clive (iirc jack's manual attack is stronger than rudy's too, so it's noticeable there too of course). barely noticeable when you have a pea shooter like jet, and you can't even chain it into a full gatling.

Stelas
Sep 6, 2010

iirc jet's shotgun had a decent enough to-hit that you could just spend money on atk upgrades and bullets, at which point an attack boost per bullet became noticable. He's never gonna be clive but he's a reliable shooter most of the time

Merilan

GulagDolls
Jun 4, 2011

woah woah woah. jet does NOT use a shotgun.

jet & virginia have 'arcs' just like the game does...and i dont mean character arcs. virgina starts out as the item thrower basically but if you spec her right she can do a lot of burst damage

besides his emergency ohshit button [that he does grow of] with the right rune setup he will demolish most random encounters/steal maybe. clive's no good for that if you want to keep hp high cause he's always gonna go last. in boss battles he basically just fills gaps and uses replay on clive though...

after cecilia and tim it's fun to have a guardian-type character go "actually, nah" even if he winds up being roped in by virtue of the plot

Endorph
Jul 22, 2009

i like that his little brother is actually into the traditions and the game doesnt really portray either of them as wrong or right even if the game dunks on gallows a fair bit

the whole subplot isnt really super important outside of loredumps but its a way more interesting dichotomy than if the traditions were awful and gallows was rebelling against an unjust system or if his brother was pure and noble and gallows had to learn to be less selfish. its more just a bunch of stuff that works for one of them but not the other. feels more true to life. ig gallows does have to grow up a bit over the course of the game (funnily since hes the second oldest party member) but it feels mostly unrelated to his decision to leave.
