Did you know the leading cause of death among medieval and early modern map makers was gouging their own eyes out to try to make the pain stop.

The medieval thing to do was to declare yourself above mere representational map-making, and to claim that your work had deeper abstract and symbolic meaning: See how Jerusalem is at the center of it all [leaning back medievalishly] my work here is done time to draw some more silly rabbits doing human things

I just realised that all it's representing is that the US is the top export market for Japan and how large other Japanese export markets are relative to it. Why not show absolute values and let the reader come to their own conclusions? e. Someone clearly didn't bother finding out where Canberra is. Why is the Starbucks quadrant raised up? Is there a Z axis somehow?

Starbucks wants to trick us into believing their quality and style are great, but in reality there is no intersection whatsoever between Starbucks and either of those categories.

That is an interesting graph that somewhat captures the flow of topics. If they just wanted to show how much time was spent on each topic, there are certainly better formats for that. Also, I'm assuming the size of the dot is long they talked about the topic, or something like that.

There are clusters of dots on top of each other for one and more candidates. What the hell could it possibly mean? Did they talk over each other, while someone also did a ventriloquist act with a Trump puppet? At around 37 minutes de Blasio manages to speak about immigration in three voices simultaneously!

I realized that too after I posted. Each dot is a sentence (or paragraph, or single thought), and the size is number of words in that sentence? But still don't know why they are stacked vertically, instead of sequentially in time. I didn't watch the debate, maybe it was everyone talking at once.

Until Starbucks got big and everybody started drinking espresso drinks "Coffee Shop" just meant something like "Diner," except maybe a little more upscale I guess? They served coffee, of course, but just plain ordinary drip brew. Honestly that still what it means to me. A place that specializes in coffee is a cafe or a coffeehouse.
