Airspace posted:Honestly that Maggie(?) model is... well, I don't mind it. That's not Maggie. That's Paige, a new character in the new book. Before the grand 3D transition, she looked like this: I think they're not really happy with the distinctive "amateur 3D model" look they've ended up with (for example, that sword, and the picture of the tower among the trees in the current update). So they're running their 3D renders through a cel-shading filter to restore the kinds of sharp lines they used to have with inked art, and then they're importing the result into Photoshop and running a bunch of "blur" and "smudge" filters on them to hide the low quality of their models, give everything some extra texture, and impart a more conventional 2D art look. For example, the shot of the typewriter and books a couple pages ago is probably what they're really going for. Except they're still experimenting with it, and using different amounts of filtering depending on the shot and what kind of models they're using (I severely doubt they modeled the typewriter and books themselves). So sometimes they overprocess it and end up with a smeary mess that looks like they let a five-year-old with watercolors do the coloring. Also, the trees in the second image on the page are just the same tree copy-pasted over and over again, with each copy slightly rotated or resized. Every single one has identical leaves. The writing is worse than usual, too. I can barely tell what it's even saying half the time, and there's several typoes and missing words. Is he just making GBS threads out crap updates to get the Patreon money flowing again now that the Kickstarter money dropped off after only $15k or so?

You know, I have to say: This makes the webnovel version of Erfworld look much better. I mean, I still wouldn't read it, but goddamn does that art detract rather than add. Maybe if this new engine got used solely for establishing location shots, and some careful illustrations like close-ups of inanimate objects and so on, little embellishments, it could even make a webnovel a bit easier on the eyes.

So he's gone from, "we'll be using 3D for shots of cityscapes that are difficult to illustrate by hand" to "we'll be using 3D for absolutely everything, it's a Poser comic now"? This is really funny and sad. I get the zeal towards asset efficiency, but it's not coming from a dude who has a strong understanding of visual art.

A big flaming stink posted:don't we have extremely convincing circumstantial evidence that the "terrible thing on par with cancer" that balder posted about was him being court-ordered to pay remuneration to one of his former artists? I don't think so, just a lot of people guessing that and regurgitating people's prior guesswork (of which I was one). Still that's my guess, though I wouldn't say it is certain.

Not really? Just one Reddit post from some guy who claimed one of the artists personally told him all that. For me, that's "uncle who works at Nintendo" levels of reliability.

Zoe posted:lmbo, I can't get over how ugly this is. I'm poo poo at all forms of art and yet I'm fairly certain I could produce similar results with 15 minutes of MSPaint. Clearly the fact that that the sword has replaced her hand shows that she has abandoned the pen and her pacifist, isolationist ways, and is committed to the coming war. Surely it wouldn't be too hard to add little pink fingers gripping the sword so it must have been intentional. You really have to read everything into the art you can to even have a chance of understanding the "magic" and "rules" of the system, I mean comic. Remember all the posts about how he agonized over every panel of artwork, and kept sending them back for corrections? Now you can expect perfect fidelity to the vision every time.
