Turntable steering actually achieves a no-scrub turn way better than any IFS setup, it's precisely what Ackerman geometry is trying to emulate.

OK that image has lovely transparency but hopefully you see what I mean. The only issue is that the dual rear axles will scrub, but that's an issue on conventional-steered trucks too.

My brain is loving broken because i kept reading that as turnt-able, as in able to get turnt.

good luck ever reading the word turntable again.

I'll set the building on fire
A ton of scrub radius makes it easier to turn at slow speed because the tire can just roll instead of having to twist.

I can see there being some issues with stability at higher speeds, but I think I remember reading somewhere that a truck tire has quite a bit of self-aligning force from pneumatic trail so maybe it would be fine.

Tangentially automotive related: I have a big spool of safety wire left over from when I owned a KTM super Moto and this baffle on a bird feeder makes a lot of noise when we get high wind.

I think it's Ready To Race now.

When you have a spool of safety wire and wire pliers, every problem starts to look like a trifecta of neatly torqued and drilled bolts.

It is known.

That looks like it would be entertaining. Don’t run into anything, though. (Not that they have a whole lot more crash protection for the drive when there’s a body on it. )

Crash into whatever, you'll be thrown free to safety.

Just don't hit an large bumps, or you'll be thrown free to safety.

I can only imagine how loving scary this would be to drive, but I kinda want to find out.

To be perfectly honest I don't know if that's something we'd do. It's never come up since I've been here and I imagine it's unlikely ever to. Most of the cars that we see of this vintage are regularly serviced and rarely driven. It's probably been a long time since anyone's seen any diff failures and it would be a tall order to try to sell it as preventive maintenance

How much torque on the rotation head?

It's aircore so it's not super high, I think on the order of 5k Nm. Once you get into the fresh rock that's end of hole.

You don't want too much, it can be extremely sensitive and prone to irritation. Lubrication is key to a successful drilling operation.

Wow! For a machine that size thats...... Not a lot. I converted that to ftlbs (freedom units that we still occasionally use in canuckistan) and thats about 3700 ft lbs. The drill I run is just about 3300. Its tiny in comparison to that one. But yeah, if you're coring and constantly flushing the hole with air or water, you don't need as much.
