Is it just me or have mid campaign slumps become longer and slumpier than they were a few years ago? I know campaigns have always made like 70% of their take at the beginning and end, but now it feels like it's often 90% or more. Maybe everyone who still uses kickstarter is just highly aware of what projects are launching and ending on kickstarter.

The only thing I recall MovieBob saying about rural America was that he loved Logan Lucky and considered it the film of the year because it was the one thing he'd seen in the last few years that presented rural America sympathetically rather than as almost purely dumb jocks?

I know that I am suffering a lot of kickstarter fatigue, so anytime I want something I just click the remind me button and see if it still holds my interest when it nears closing. They almost never do. Especially if the game is likely to only ever be sold through the kickstarter. That is buying into a dead scene.

It’s something I’ve been talking about to with other indie creators, yeah. Used to be, there were months too busy to do well on KS - December was a no-go, and August was pretty dire. But nowadays every month feels like that, and the mid-campaign slump can be crushing even if you think you’re prepared for it.

I am a little curious if people might start running shorter campaigns to jack up the urgency. You could potentially leverage some serious FOMO.

Honestly shorter campaigns sound pretty good just from a mental health perspective. Having two or three weeks of weighing on you instead of four is pretty great, and if most of your funding is in the first and last days your funding shouldn’t suffer too much either.

I'm currently fighting with Queen Games about the whole "you're not allowed to start a new kickstarter until your old one is fulfilled" thing and when I was researching how many projects they'd launched, that seems to be their approach. Everything is running for 2 weeks, maybe an extra day to make it end on a Friday or whatever.

This is a trend a lot of creators and publishers are talking about, with many opting for between 14 and 21 days. I cant see doing it for less than 21 personally, you need time for both paycheck cycles and marketing to work. Some people want to try 7 day campaigns which is nuts to me. They point to places like Buttonshy that do this but those publishers have an established following and often run kickstarters almost monthly.

The 30 day cycle is also good for people on monthly paychecks so they can budget stuff out. If you want to do a shorter cycle you probably want to warn your fan base of pricing and dates well in advance.

I've been toying with the idea of a hyper-short KS sometime, like, 1-2 days, for some Orc Stabr-ish silly small project. I have a lot coming up but I think it could be a lark

Yeah, I'm fine with shorter campaigns when I'm in for like, a $10 PDF or something, but having serious lead time on any campaign that's going to expect me to shell out $100+ is pretty key.

Michał Oracz is working on a new game called Etherfields. It's a dungeonDREAM crawler and it is a cooperative game where you're going through dreams with really nice artwork (some of the stuff is giving me Beksinski vibes) and your character's abilities are customized through deckbuilding and it sounds like it is a story-based game with a campaign.

I'm excited for it. It doesn't launch until the 16th but here's a massive collage of the game's art and a vid showing an overview of the game.

I loved playing Neuroshima Hex on my phone. Oracz is a good designer. The reward for exclusive day 1 backing is putting me off, though. I really don't like high pressure sales tactics and weaponizing FOMO. If I had seen this on Day 2 or later, I would have instantly closed it without a second thought.

It looks like the day 1 backing just gets you the exclusive for free, so essentially a 10 dollar discount of sorts. Comments on Kickstarter, like any online platform, are a gigantic waste of time.

Day one exclusives are there to get all the fence sitters to actually back on the first day so your campaign gets off to a big start and you can post "funded 476% in 1 hour!" on the thumbnail. I guess the conventional wisdom is that this is important for a successful campaign. Personally I've never seen a day one exclusive that a) deterred me from backing a campaign or b) looked worth adding as an addon if you didn't get it for free. It seems like they're usually pretty trifling.

Got my copy of Jordan Draper and Lay Waste Games' METAL the other day. Very sad that the commitment to "Everything in the box is made of metal" was sullied by the components shipping in a ziploc bag. All kidding aside, this is a delightful little box of metal components, and it'll sit nicely on my shelf with my other "toolkit of neat stuff" style games. Playing little tabletop croquet with a tiny wee little mallet is just really fun.

Glad they decided to go ahead and give us the stretch goal content despite us falling just a hair short of the funding goal; having different colored finishes on the large balls is much nicer than the nearly-invisible engraved symbols.

It convinces me to back on Day 1 if I'm on the fence, but I'm also a monster who has no compunctions about withdrawing pledges before the conclusion of a campaign.

The Cultist Simulator day (or week?) one KS bonus was that you'd get all the DLC for free, which I think added up to about 10 dollars total over the next year.

I missed the KS entirely but I do wish I'd gotten the Eternal Edition.

Same. A lot of them also go by backer number rather than a time limited pledge, so you can just drop $1 if you're vaguely interested.

Actually it was anyone who bought it within the first week of release, not just pre-orders. And it wasn't really an early bird bonus on the kickstarter, since all tiers got the dlc for free, the early bird bonus was getting the game for 2 pounds cheaper if I recall correctly.

Well well well, the Spellbound Kingdoms suppliment finally got an update after a full year of total radio silence. Only vague mentions of new stuff and specific mentions of playtesting, but no word on why it's so behind schedule or when we might expect to get any product. At least it's not dead dead.
