CoV was rough all things considered. The game started pretty good but it made so many leaps forward over the years and then the private servers pushed it even further.

I don't have a massive problem with the pixies as characters by themselves, because they are at least a little interesting. But they're a really unpleasant introduction to a new area specifically because they're very annoying and deliberately wasting your time when you really want to be getting your bearings on this new area.

They would've been a whole lot more palatable if they switched positions with one of the other settlements in the region.

I saw a rumour - not necessarily substantiated! - that SE were considering a revamp of the FF14 base game and potentially a SP version (the new expansion seems to set some groundwork for this with the NPC parties?) so I'm hoping to get into it if that turns out to be true. I got the base game on Humble years ago but have never really tried it.

The composer for both Bloodstained games is the same composer who did the music for more than half of the Castlevania games released in the past 25 years, including Symphony of the Night, Aria of Sorrow, and Order of Ecclesia.

Bloodstained's music was okay but not as good as SotN's, but that's because Symphony of the Night has the best music in the genre. I bet they poured a lot of resources into the soundtrack for SotN because it was one of the the first times they were able to develop for a system like the PS1 that had red book audio. Rondo of Blood was actually the first time they could use red book audio, and it also had good music, but listening to it now, it sounds really dated, like they were just messing around with the new audio capabilities they had.

I thought the rest of the non-classic Castlevania games had pretty crap music, honestly. Some of the melodies sound good when they're remixed and played with different instruments, but the tinny sound out of the GBA/DS always ruined everything.

Even decent sound capabilities don't save Harmony of Dissonance. I love the game, and it actually doesn't look bad once you remove the Dayglo outlines from Juste and some other things. But looooord, that music is awful.

Harmony of Dissonance was my first Castlevania and Metroidvania, but I wouldn't hold any nostalgia for it. In addition to the tinny music and eye-searing color-scheme it completely bungles the dual-world mechanic. Instead of warping from point A in the light-world to point A in the dark-world, you'd end up it point up at point F on the map with no frame of reference. You would just bungle through the same map twice.

Circle of the Moon may be cheaply-difficult and missing numerous features (No shops, no Alternate characters) but it felt a hell of a lot more consistent. Its pixel-art holds up if you play it on a DS or emulator.

The only GBA title with great music was probably Mother 3, which will never ever be legally distributed in the West. That's the penalty for riffing on the 60's Batman theme and Chuck Berry.

I found that feature after I made the complaint post. It is nice but for some reason Halo 1 and 3’s campaign download were around 6 gigs each while Halo 2 has a 45 gig download for just its campaign.

Small lining, Halo 2’s campaign is kind of garbage so maybe this was for the best.

Phoenix Wright on GBA managed to have great music on that system. Of course, it was also Japan-only on the GBA, and the DS version's music is just the same thing but better.

I came in way late on SotN. I'd already played all the GBA games, and very soon after played Dawn of Sorrow.

SotN is an important game to the genre. But it shows its age in a lot of ways, and every game of its sort after took on it and built on the formula.

It's pretty audacious for the entire second half of a game to be disguised behind a premature bad ending. Though in SOTN there is a ton of recycling and the difficulty curve gets shot to hell when you enter the inverse castle. (If the second castle is supposed to be a mirror version then why is turned 180 degrees instead of flipped?

Bloodstained has a nice nod to this feature by earning a superpower that reverses gravity for you alone.

I'm playing the Messenger, and apparently halfway through it turns from a strong Ninja Gaiden into an average Metroid.

Sometimes the shift in gameplay can be more subtle. The playable space in Metal Gear Solid 1 is incredibly small and by the halfway point you've seen every place and all the sneaking is replaced with action-setpieces.

I can't for the life of me kill this orange ogre in The Messenger. It has the standard plethora of moves bull-rushing into a wall, the fastball-special, and slapping you in the face with it's dirty loin-cloth. It's weak-spot by getting hit while stunned or being hit from behind. It also has two bullshit moves, a boulder-toss and elbow drop that both home in on the player with their massive hitboxes. The guy below makes it look easy but it's frustrating to contend with a move that's aimed at your exact location in the last half-second.

Browser-based game Kingdom of Loathing actually does something similar to that in a questline. Get the first one, the second one (the character makes a comment about how this is going to take a while), then get pages 3-15 immediately after page 2.

Things bringing down Kingdom of Loathing: Playing it semi-well basically requires the wiki open at all times, if not just straight up using a third party program to keep track of all the fiddly poo poo.

The Game Boy Player was a great lesson in how companies handled technological limitations, especially with Nintendo ports and Sega. The Super Mario Advance games all looked kinda washed-out if you played them on the Player, because they had to compensate for the dark screen. And I remember in Sonic Battle especially noticing that the art avoided using black as much as possible, because it didn't show up well.

The games I remember managing to look good both on and off those dark screens were the Mega Man Battle Network games. Maybe because they leaned on a lot of vibrant colors that looked good either way, and because they were working with new designs that we couldn't specifically say were too dark or too bright from previous experience.
