Floor chat: we had composite fake wood at our previous house that was decent but not as robust as the full “luxury” vinyl (fully vinyl plank - no wood to absorb moisture, warp, etc) that we put in our now-needs-rebuilt house. We used the Lifeproof brand from Home Depot and it’s put up with 3 little boys, 2 big dogs, and 2 cats with very little wear. Will probably use the same stuff again once what we have gets pulled out of the house during the rebuild. On a lighter note my wife and I took the boys for a long drive in the Raptor yesterday. I finished burning off the lovely dealer gas and put ~33 gallons of Shell 91 in it and it seems much happier. We drove up to Boulder, then went up to Estes Park, and decided while we were there to go through Rocky Mountain National Park and up and over Trail Ridge Road, and finally came back by way of Idaho Springs where we stopped for good pizza at a fixture there, Beau Jo’s. We all had a great time. Something like 700 miles on the Raptor now. I chased a WRX down Berthoud Pass and gapped a GMT800 6.6 diesel on the way up Floyd Hill. For a bigass truck the Raptor handles well and makes decent power.

The Raptor is a sore spot for me since it punches a perfect hole in my "pickups and the people who drive them suck" bias. They're just great. Tons of power, cool turbo (or V8) noises, all that sidewall and suspension travel...plus sweet cheesy graphics on the side. I'll take seven of them.

In their 2016 50 car noise comparison test the BMW 3-series placed 26th, and here's from another test from 2016 with two other cars that aren't in the 50 car test. On the contrary, I think it's a problem that is pretty unique to us Swedes and a few more countries that allow studded tires. I don't know if there is another place that isn't bad just to lack of maintenance but where the roads are planned to be this coarse. Denmark is smoother, but maybe Finland? drat studded tires. I wish that they would at least stop with the coarse asphalt here in the south where we rarely get snow/ice anymore. Anyway, yeah Volvos are pretty good. My dads V70 is pretty quiet and comfortable, but I'll be damned if I ever buy a Volvo. I'm silly and like cars that are rare to see on the road (I drive Alfa Romeos at the moment...)... I don't think I can manage Volvo ownership... Your post made me buy the 2016 test of 50 cars, and I learned some really interesting stuff. Apparently it's the low-frequency noise at 80-300Hz that our Swedish roads like to produce which is the culprit and that manufacturers struggle to get rid of. A V70 manages 77,8 dB(A) at these frequencies vs an S-class which (only) manages 76,3dB(A). The second best tested car was a V60 CC that managed 76,1dB(A). All @ 110km/h. Both surprising yet perhaps not since Volvo are Swedish (well) cars that are made for and tested on Swedish roads. Regarding noise in that frequency range they mentioned a very useful test, and it's how well you can hear talking on the radio, and how much you have to turn up the volume. Really hit home because in my current car (Alfa Romeo Giulietta), I have a hard time hearing what people say on the phone and have to turn up the volume a lot. The Lexus was much easier to talk in, but not as much as I thought.

I would give it 4-5k before you judge the fuel economy. Sometimes brand new vehicles take time to break in. My current cummins ram went from 18mpg to 20. Your right about the 3.5 sound. Reminds me of an early 90s explorer. It has that same drone. Still a really nice truck.

They come in plank sizes just like wood, you late them flat and that's pretty much it. Didn't matter though, because each plank started to warp and curl in on itself so suddenly the nice fit that it had is much less because each plank is slightly smaller than what it was originally. When it was brand new though it was great, soft and warm to the touch in a pleasant way. Now that we just went true Florida and put down actual tile it is far better, especially because in the summer heat the interior floor stays cool.

I've just never heard of that happening with vinyl before. Some friends of our did theirs a few years ago in vinyl and didn't have any issues. Maybe it's just that company you got it from, or have you heard of other issues with different manufacturers?

You know, i was out looking at some very old tractors the other day and i got to thinkin..... Homeopathic medicine suggests that water molecules have a memory, and that the more diluted a medicine is, the more potent it is. With metal being infinitely recyclable, there's very likely molecules of iron in your car today that were once in an old tractor. Maybe they were even a train car or a barbecue along the way. Maybe less reliable cars have molecules of less reliable equipment in them. Russian cars suck because old Russian tractors suck. German cars are so troublesome because all the iron molecules in them have a memory of when they were in contact with molecules from old Nazi tanks. Maybe lemons aren't just cars built on a Friday, but just cars unfortunate enough to have molecules of an old Mitsubishi in them rather than molecules of an John Deere.

The genie (it's complected) says he will go back in time and deliver you the car you want to buy, according to these rules: 1. You can buy one car 2. You are buying it sight unseen 3. You have to pay the asking price (the genie finds bargaining tedious) 4. I'd take the Isuzu Think I posted last month (don't remember) but when my folks were visiting end of last month Dad ended up needing some emergency hernia surgery and they discovered a mass in his lung during imaging for the hernia. Just confirmed Stage III lung cancer. Lifelong smoker until about 4 years ago and is in the best shape I've ever seen him in (he's my stepdad, married my Mom about 21 years ago). If it wasn't for the hernia we'd never know. Not great news obviously, but since we found out about the mass not a surprise. Had a couple weeks to prepare for it. I am now preparing for roller coaster ride that's just beginning. Don't think I slept more than 45 minutes last night knowing this news was coming down the pipe. A new concern I have, and I realized this last night lying in bed, is keeping them away from all the cancer bullshit on the internet and they are on facebook all the loving time.
