yeah, I'm not convinced there's fraud at play here either (unfortunately). Just saying that that's a really lovely and laughable excuse to turn on Caban, and one that shows you don't actually care about anything she ran on and would probably have found a different reason to turn on her shortly after the election had her lead stayed intact

Put another way; I find the accusations of ballot tampering extremely suspect. They seem pretty baseless other than the generalized aura of suspicion that establishment politicians attract in events like this, and there’s just honestly no reason for that. The cause for outrage is the fight over acceptance of affidavit ballots, etc.; that’s where the margin is in this race. Not in some NC style mass absentee fraud scheme.
the entire reason i didn't begrudge Katz for conceding is because in a race that close, you'd be an idiot to do so

a couple of updates on the upcoming primary to replace Jose Serrano Sr. in his South Bronx congressional district. as of Friday, the two major candidates that have already declared to replace him are Assemblyman Michael Blake (a corporate Democrat who's more concerned with how he can promote his profile than with doing his job as a representative) and Councilmember/former State Senator Ruben Diaz Sr. (a conservative Democrat in every way, along with a long and well-documented history of homophobia that hasn't stopped to this day). on Friday, one of the rumored candidates, State Senator Gustavo Rivera, wrote an op-ed/announcement that he will not be running for the seat. tl;dr: his priority is getting more stuff passed in the Legislature, probably chief among them the New York Health Act, which he is the primary sponsor of in the Senate

today, Councilmember Ritchie Torres officially declared he was running, although it was obvious that he's been wanting to run for months
https://twitter.com/RitchieTorres/status/1150714820590800897

he's easily the best of the three major candidates (there are others who have declared but they're irrelevant). his relationship with the Bronx machine is complicated- it's somewhere between the full-throated support that Diaz Sr. and Blake have and the outright antipathy that Rivera gets. comparing his stances today to his original platform when he first ran for Council in 2013 is striking, but he's still a fairly reliably progressive voice there, and he's a very stark contrast to much of the Bronx delegation that's moderate-to-conservative. he's also the only out gay elected official from there in a borough that regularly boosts the voices of homophobes

i would have preferred Rivera easily, but he would have made it easier for Blake or Diaz Sr. to win, so it's not the worst thing in the world

idk who comes off as lamer for this image/byline combo: Scott Stringer or City & State

i like Stringer, he's ahead of the curve when it comes to endorsing non-establishment candidates and he's used his office for reasonably good things (like a study saying that the city can create 50,000 units of housing just from abandoned city-owned property). but he's barely visible, nobody gives a poo poo about the office of comptroller, and he's a snooze as a personality

he's very good at that, and he's my favorite of the four who've either already declared or have done everything but declare. he doesn't have the name recognition, but for now, neither do his competitors. "for now" is important because you're absolutely going to see a media blitz by Corey Johnson that the media will be all too willing to broadcast. as i mentioned before, that guy's a charmer

the city council? he's been an old hand in city politics for a long time, so i'm sure he can convince enough people to support his agenda

does he stand by them? guess we'll have to find out. it does seem like he's ahead of the curve when it comes to these issues than most in elected government, so i'm leaning yes

the state? lol. we're still restrained by early 20th century measures to curb the power of Tammany Hall even though they've long outlived their usefulness. unless we get a governor that isn't Cuomo or a Republican, there's no chance that changes. otherwise, given that Stringer has the charisma of a wet towel, the scummy media isn't going to take his side

speaking of which, here's yet another case of the media just reporting the facts on Cuomo. sure, those facts say "he's never seen big-donor money he didn't like," but they're not gonna report on it after this

i feel like i should make a weekly post ITT that's a compilation of stories about the New York political media letting Cuomo get away with corrupt and control freak poo poo. if i posted every time something like that happens, it'd just be noise

If you don't have a problem with DSA, there's upstate chapters

https://www.dsausa.org/chapters/#ny

I am not sure how good they are, since I'm more likely to go to NJ than upstate, Binghamton seems to be the one I hear the most about through very vague osmosis. I do know most of the upstate chapters did not endorse Nixon.

good on them, i always thought NYC DSA endorsing Nixon & Jumaane was a dumb move that was a complete waste of time and resources on two races that didn't have a chance in hell. if DSA upstate is anything like it is in NYC, you'll be able to learn about different leftist groups there. it's where i found out about the Jewish Solidarity Caucus, where in turn i learned about Outlive Them NYC, which is where i'm putting most of my political focus in these days

downstate, Queens's county committee drive seems to have hit a big brick wall. given what worked in Brooklyn, the only way to make headway is to get a new county party leader who's willing to keep the door ajar so that the trickle can become a flood. so, uh, good luck with that!

probably unpopular opinion about Caban: she should drop her legal challenge and prep for city council in 2021. Daniel Dromm's seat, along with many others, will be vacated due to term limits, and given her name recognition and her not-white maleness (although she is LGBTQ like Dromm), she'll have a leg up already

also expect a lot more collaboration between the WFP and DSA in the years to come. Caban's campaign is probably the start of greater teamwork between the two groups, and i've been thinking that both of them should be on the same page for a couple of years

gonna assume something related to sports gambling

i've been meaning to post this for a while because it's a landmark article: something that actually pushes back against the cuomo narrative instead of "just the facts" nonsense

i'm not going to post the link to the google doc because i'm not sure if i'm at liberty to do so, but there are going to be three candidate forums for the Brooklyn DSA electoral group. some of the races have multiple candidates running for them vying for an endorsement:
  • two in Senate district 25, held by Velamette Montgomery since the mid-80s, who is widely expected to retire
  • two in Assembly district 50, held by Joe Lentol, who's been there since 1972 and is tight with Airbnb and the Satmars
  • three for Assembly district 51, held by Felix Ortiz, machine scum who did a full-court press to defend his district from various county committee challengers and the female district leader race and largely succeeded
then there are districts that will be having one challenger:
  • Assembly District 54, held by Erik Dilan, son of Martin and just as willing to take real estate money
  • Assembly District 57, held by Walter Mosley, who is very wishy-washy and pretty corrupt (although he did vote against the entire budget this year)
  • Assembly District 49, held by Peter Abbate, who i know nothing about but has been in the Assembly since 1987
some names that i recognized immediately are Boris Santos for AD54 (chief of staff to Julia Salazar, chief of staff to Antonio Reynoso before that), Jabari Brisport for SD25 (ran against Laurie Cumbo in 2017 on the Green and Socialist lines, hopefully will not be running third party this time), and Emily Gallagher in AD50 and Genesis Aquino in AD51 (both ran for female district leader in recent years, both lost)

You know, I don't remember if this was brought up here, but a watered-down Sanctuary City-like resolution was passed by Troy City Council a few weeks ago, only to be quickly vetoed by the mayor. The Council President and another member, who had opposed the resolution, decided this wasn't enough, so they attempted to push for a change to the city charter that would bar future councils from passing any kind of law of this nature. After holding public hearings without sufficient prior notice in the most conservative areas of the city, they brought it to a vote, and it was voted down, obviously. They're spinning this whole process to accuse Democrats of not wanting to allow the people to vote on it. Keeping in mind that the Council President had to repeatedly admit that she formulated the charter amendment in a certain way because otherwise there is no mechanism for a referendum in the City of Troy - maybe that was intentional! Either way, I'm going to guess that she's desperate to find ways to distract the electorate from her Jan 1st DUI arrest as she heads over for reelection this November. Of course our piece of poo poo Republican County Executive is all in with her, and he and his County Clerk said they would fight the new law requiring the DMV to provide driver's licenses without checking immigration status.

it depends on how she runs her campaign. i had little faith for Alessandra Biaggi because she worked for the governor's office and for the Hillary campaign, plus her grandfather was in Congress only to resign when he was indicted for corruption. fortunately, she made her campaign about none of these things, beat Klein soundly as a result, and is exceeding what little expectations i had for her

that issue aside, i'm interested in seeing more. and i'm willing to overlook that view in this district because it's going to go over like a lead balloon in Borough Park and UWS. even the guy who's running against Grace Meng and openly gunning for DSA's endorsement has a moderated view of Israel, due to the fact that Forest Hills, Kew Gardens, and Rego Park are there
