Today's news

quote:

Seventeen people have been injured after two cars crashed at a "car cruise" gathering and ploughed into spectators.

The vehicles collided on Monkswood Way, Stevenage, at about 21:45 BST on Thursday leaving two seriously injured and 15 more hurt.

One of the charity event's organisers described the "horrific" crash as a "nightmare".

Police have asked witnesses to send footage of the crash to detectives.

Video footage shows one car passing another before the two collide and one strikes people standing at the roadside while the other hits spectators in the central reservation.

Yes. At the height of Group B which had insanely fast cars with little safety, people would line the course and try to touch the cars as they went by. People would actually step onto the course, in the middle of the road and then scatter just as the car came through. They would try to take a picture just as the car was about to hit them, and then they'd jump out of the way. There are plenty of videos of rally cars driving through crowds where the crowd separates just ahead of the car and closes back up behind the car. Drivers of the time said it was terrifying because you'd hear the hands slapping on the car as they drove past. And yes, there were crashes and spectators were killed. No one cared until it became too much.

I think one of the Audi drivers said something like that he had to think of all the spectators as just trees or bushes, otherwise he was too scared of hitting them to drive.

Probably a good idea: it's far too easy to get densitized to these kind of things. I was definitely looking at the uncensored version and thinking 'well the people are quite small in the video, so okay to post?'

Or at least give very specific gore warnings so that people know what to expect.

I think this thread is a pretty OK one to have gore and death in. I wouldn’t ban it just because there’s a ton of unsafe poo poo that actually has consequences.

I would say it’s a good idea to tag the living gently caress out of them and not in-line a gif or something else that can auto-play etc. Use links. If you tell someone that a dangerous unsecured load squashes a guy and they click through to see it they’ve made the decision for themselves.

The entire subject of OSHA and safety regulations is about these rules being written in blood, so the rare instances where death is posted, it's relevant, unlike the schad thread where the theme is "unfortunate things that you get pleasure from," where yeah posting death is pretty ghoulish.

Maybe for the OSHA thread, enforcing content warnings for links that have death in them would be more appropriate? Maybe a strict ban on outright gore, but I don't think we risk turning into a gore thread, if there were posters like that they'd have tried by now.

Yeah, don’t get me wrong, I’m not in any fascist rush to implement harsh rules in a 1300 page thread. But I’ve seen gore here before and somewhat gratuitous, they were probed. Just broaching the topic as I like this thread a lot.

Yeah I hear ya. It's something that I've thought about in this thread too every time death has come up, but I feel like this thread handles it well because for the most part we have a shared background/understanding about these kinds of things. Nobody's going "lol look at this guy get rekt" it's more "gently caress, a crane collapsed" and everyone else going "gently caress that sucks"

The Schad thread needed some version of "don't post someone actively dying" because people were getting weird about posting people dying for pretty innocuous reasons.

Shut up Meg posted:

That's a great point actually. Even safety instructional briefings and videos with simulated gore have very clear and obvious warnings up front.
