Check out Earl Sweatshirt, he is a newer artist with a lot of DOOM influence and a laid-back rap style. Some other artists you may like:

Oddissee
Diamond District
Apollo Brown (he is a producer, but if you like his sound, definitely check out the numerous projects he has with a bunch of great rappers)

If you listen to hip-hop instrumentals, I know a ton of producers you might like.
Yeah, I'm really digging Apollo Brown, thanks for that. The album he did with Ghostface is extremely my poo poo. Mona Lisa is also a really enjoyable album. It's exactly what I was looking for.

Earl Sweatshirt confuses me. I like the producing, but something, maybe just my age, hates the mumble rap rhythm. His rhymes are interesting and I have no trouble understanding him, I just can't stand that cadence. I'm really trying not to hate modern mainstream hip hop because it's just a lovely knee jerk older generation thing to do. It's just my version of Randy Marsh's all new music sounding like fart noises. Even artists I can tell are probably pretty good like Dear Silas and Hopsin are hard for me to listen to because of that.

I do listen to instrumental stuff sometimes. My totally guilty pleasure is those lo fi hip hop youtube channels with the anime characters studying with a cat or something if I really need to get data entry or writing done. But as far as higher quality stuff, I'm always looking for recommendations. I really like Madlib, J Dilla, and sometimes Flying Lotus for chiller stuff, Babu, Mr Dibs, and RZA for more traditional stuff.

What ever happened to Thelonious Martin? I thought he was going to do some big things.

Welcome to getting old!

I was a huge hip hop fan from about 1993 to the early 2000s and I can't find any new stuff I like. What I do listen to I enjoy mostly because of how familiar it is, and it's limited to very few artists.

It's just not relevant to me anymore. It's music for young people, and that's very obvious. I actually think a lot of sounds pretty good but I can't connect with the lyrics anymore.

I grew up with hip-hop in the same period as you and still find a TON of hip-hop that has a similar style and vibe. Mostly listen to the classic sample-based boom bap stuff and there are tons of people still putting that stuff out. I am kinda curious what you mean by connecting to the lyrics more back then. A lot of the subject matter is the same and you still have your street rappers, party rappers, and conscious rappers all mixed in.

Yeah, very much this. There is more good hip hop being made now than ever before. It’s become a ridiculously diverse genre and dominates the growth of pop music now. That’s the thing that makes it difficult to find what I want sometimes, there just aren’t enough hours in the day to listen to it until I find that right sound on my own.

I just hate the little finger of the genre that gen Z listens to the most. Migos, Post Malone, that Gucci Gang kid, Lil Yachty, Lil Uzi, Lil Pump, whoever they are. The videos making fun of them are pretty good though.

I used to read Pitchfork a lot (I know) but it seems they've fallen off since the Conde Nast purchase. Are there any good blogs/websites that'll help me keep up to date with what's hip and happening in music today?

What are some Pop Punk bands and albums to look into? I used to think Avril Lavigne and The Offspring were pop punk but that seems arguable now after glancing at the pop punk subreddit.

Apparently "the sound" has changed so I guess recommendations for classic and modern pop punk would be in order or else I wouldn't be able to hear what's different.

Listen to PUP for sure.

Also I am a really big fan of Captain, We’re Sinking’s album “The Future Is Cancelled.” But that’s hardly a consensus great record. It’s a genre that usually doesn’t do much for me otherwise.

The Offspring were never completely traditional punk, but they were more like that on their earlier albums. It's worth digging into their back catalog if you like anything from them. Same with Green Day.

I don't know the genre terribly well so I can't recommend too much. I like Discount's Half Fiction, so you might check that out.

Some consider them more emo or whatever, but Jawbreaker. 24 Hour Revenge Therapy is pretty pop punky.

And before anybody says it, yes, Dear You is a better album, but it's not really pop punk at all.

I'd also second Jeff Rosenstock. He makes great music, and he's a really nice person.

Also they predate your reference points by a fair bit of time but the Buzzcocks. They basically pioneered the genre.

That's a huge field to be honest. And what someone considers punk or not based on how much pop in it isn't really an objective thing. I don't think anybody would question the Ramones' credentials but they loved themselves bubblegum pop.

You've got old dirty punky stuff like Stiff Little Fingers, to really slickly produced 2000s type sad songs about girls from the Ataris or whatever, jokey bands like NOFX, street punk type shout-along bands like One Man Army or Rancid. Whether someone calls any of these pop or not is gonna vary but someone will. Do you have any particular place to start from? Something you love or hate?

Well I do generally prefer female vocalists but I can't think any of the big name pop punk bands are fronted by a woman. None that I know of anyway. Although the Pop Music Thread recommended Charly Bliss who I think are pop punk.

Like anybody my age I listened to Green Day growing up.They're not bad but not really too interested in their discography.

I used to be big into metal ten or so years ago and I remember a lot of people I knew praising Blink-182's drummer while lamenting that he was in a band ' like that." Apparently they're a big, big name in pop punk.

All I know is that I don't listen to metal anymore because I don't like "heavy" music. I don't know poo poo about music in a technical sense so I'm not sure how to describe it. I like catchy and mellow beats. I mainly listen to all kinds of pop these days for that reason. I absolutely adore 80s synth ranging from cheesy to genuinely good like Pet Shop Boys if that's any help but I doubt it.

I feel like anime and Japanese games in the 80s/early 90s had a lot of this in varying degrees, though maybe not so cyberpunk (though if you want to drop the jazz and go full on in that direction, there's stuff like the Armitage III opening theme).

Otherwise, I'd say look into some of the arrange albums Kukeiha Club did (that's Konami's in-house band) back in that era:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Y2nzUgsq0k

and maybe try out the city pop genre (which, again, isn't typically very cyberpunk, but it pretty much defined the big city sound in Japan in the 80s)

Hmm, difficult one as it's pop jazz-fusion as-seen through the lens of 90s Japanese pop-culture and I don't think any one artist is out there with the tools to scratch that particular itch.

As Erebus said, you might find some Citypop will do it for you but failing that I can throw a few long-shots at you as I've recently been digging up some bits of 70s - 90s jazz fusion obsucra
