I want a gauss rifle mostly for the headshot capability. I have an AC20+++ right now on my Cyclops-Z w/ ECM equipment and sure it definitely does the job but the range on the gauss would be most excellent.

It's basically a headshot machine. If they were randomly in shops I'd buy them constantly, and probably use nothing but them and large lasers for the complementary range.

The huge difference in this is that if I have a character in XCOM, and they survive long enough, they are going to increase in power level from squaddie to unstoppable death machine, and so will their weapons, provided I have enough money.

I love a lot about Battletech, but the fact that I don't have the next level of mechs until I kill them in just the right way is one of the most frustrating parts of the game. How long does it take you to actually salvage that King Crab at the end of the game? Moreover, how long does it take you to get that first Shadow Hawk when all you have are light low medium mechs?

I'm probably in the minority of absolutely hating the salvage mechanic, but it really does make Battletech more grindy to actually get better stuff. I've played entire career mode campaignd where I never got a full King Crab or Atlas because I just kept seeing the 90 ton assaults, and there's nothing I can do but grind more and hope I get lucky.

If you've reached a point in the game where you're regularly fighting assaults, especially KGCs, chances are you have a few pilots with called shot mastery. Even if you're whiffing headshots you can go for the legs and your odds of destroying them are still really good.

One of the harder options is requiring even four pieces, because then even a pilot kill doesn't guarantee a mech.

I would love to see a mechanic in place where your pilots gained affinity bonuses for piloting the same mech. Bump the stats (to hit %, stability, max evasion etc.) for pilots if they have hit an experience threshold (such as acquiring their 3rd skill) and have used the same mech X times.

It's this. The pilot progression is just so boring. Let's see them actually get perks for doing things beyond the levels you've bought. Someones' done their 10th drop as the only light - they get Light Specialist 1 or whatever. Melee'd your 20th vehicle - they get a 5% bonus to vehicle melee, etc etc etc etc.

This was great and it unlocked flashpoints, but the campaign is still restricting map travel, so I can't *get* to the flashpoints. What do I change to edit that?

I'm up to the "castle nautilus" artru mission now, that's my next plot point.

I did two 4.5 missions to farm up ~5m c-bills to buy ECM equipment at maximum cash, minimum salvage. I ended up headshotting a Stalker, a King Crab, and a Highlander (non-SLDF). I got medium lasers and heat sinks for my trouble. But I wanted cash and I regret nothing.

I'm at like 200 days left before my score evaluation and will probably get uh...Veteran? I hosed up my time management A LOT because I was relearning the game and had no idea how the score was evaluated. Debating on just keeping my run going after the score or restarting knowing what I know now and trying for higher.

I also just passed that mission. I've got a Grasshopper, a couple of Dragons, and a couple of Quickdraws. I only use the Grasshopper and one Dragon so far, though. Still got a Centurion LRM boat and Shadow Hawk.

Yeah, after doing enough story missions then most of your random encounters will feature heavies, to where you can get them easily. It should start happening pretty reliably after that mission you just finished. If you want to look for some especially hard, search out assassination contracts and make sure to go heavy salvage.

Think I'm going to start a new game, not even going to wait for the timer to tick the rest of the way down. I modded PPC heat down from 35 to 30 for the regulars and from 45 to 40 for the ER versions so they're not garbage trash anymore. And added a mod that puts LosTech on planet stores w/ SLDF presence assuming you have faction rep > 80. That's about as crazy as I'm going to get aside from the usual handful of QoL mods.

I've learned (and mostly re-learned) so much about the game that I can probably crush career mode and not needlessly gently caress up for the first 500+ days.

Visit Research, SDLF, and wealthy-looking planets in general. They're weighted pretty high, and even just the +1 injury mod does wonders.

Also yeah, hire more pilots. 6-8 is good.

I just did the Joint Venture flashpoint and got to salvage the hatchet. It's now on my Grasshopper, which just ripped a Griffin in half with one hit.

E: my God, it takes up few enough slots that if I hold onto it and get a couple of +60s I could have a Banshee swinging for over 300 damage before support weapons.

For QoL recommendations you absolutely can't leave out Battletech Performance Fix:

https://github.com/m22spencer/BattletechPerformanceFix/releases

This thing makes the loading times so much faster than stock. The rest of that list is solid. Some other QoL related ones that are not quite as essential as the ones already listed:

Better Headlights - Does what it says on the tin, has some settings if you feel like tuning this.
https://www.nexusmods.com/battletech/mods/457

Crystal Clear, settings to remove gain/blur and fine tune your gfx options
https://github.com/gnivler/CrystalClear/releases

Flashpoint Spawn Adjustments - (One of my own mods) Edits the spawn weight of lower difficulty FPs to give them great chances of spawning first. In Stock, all FPs have the same odds, except Alliance FPs.
https://github.com/BattletechModders/Flashpoint-Spawn-Adjustments/releases

Friendly Fire - Also does what it says on the tin. In stock, stray shots can't hit units of the same faction and this enables it.
https://www.nexusmods.com/battletech/mods/448

QuickCam - (One of my own mods) Cuts down forced camera delays to shorten turns. Not as critical since HBS implemented most of the mod's settings as stock, but this mod still saves time.
