Drunk Canuck is skipped, so now I am up.

So I'm going to pick my goalie now. I wanted Dubnyk, but he was rudely taken by Yaya. Instead, I'll take my riskier option. This goalie has been one of the best goalies in the league over the past 3 years, but he's been injured often. I'm banking on him being healthy this season, so I'll take Antti Raanta.

Nyquist - Monahan - Wheeler

Hedman - Petry
x - Miller

Goalies are weird because I feel like you've got 5-10 really good consistent ones, 5-10 popular but extremely bad ones, and then an infinite supply of just... mystery. You have 20-30 year olds coming out of nowhere and backstopping to the cup, and you've got cup-winners putting up league-worst seasons.
I appreciate but don't understand it or how to evaluate or predict success with it in the way I do with other positions/prospects

You need like 3-4 years worth of data to assess the true ability level of a goaltender.

Regular skaters are easier to assess because there are visible ways to detect whether or not they're outperforming/underpeforming their true talent level. Goaltending is basically "how consistent is this guy over X years"

The Vancouver Canucks are going to select Brandon Montour

There's a dearth of good RHD left to pick from, and it looks like Montour can reliably put up about 30 points a season, playing a full 75-80 games, at top-line minutes

The Colorado Avalanche don't have a lot of time to think about this inbetween waking up and going to work, but they choose Jesper Bratt in the hopes that he will improve upon his last season and become a cheap, effective 2nd liner.
