I'm getting back into Egg, Inc and man, the ads that play during this game are something else. I've seen my girlfriend play that dumb GardenScapes game, it's a fairly run of the mill "match the colors until the lines disappear" affair. There's an ad for this game that I've only ever seen in Egg Inc that honestly feels like it's generated by one of those AI bots that make Youtube videos. It's like a crudely made sidescrolling cartoon of some random girl running from an IT style clown with things like "ROCK" and "STICK" and "HOUSE" at the bottom. they tap "ROCK" and the girl throws a rock at the clown but it bursts the balloon, so then they tap STICK and it does another thing, and so on until the ad ends. And then once it goes to the final "click to play now" screen at the end of the ad it's like the old guy from those ads and the girl from the clown one in some sort of arctic wasteland shivering around a fire with the word GARDENSCAPES above them. It's so goddamn bizarre.

Also, they reworked a bunch of poo poo in Egg Inc and now it feels pretty money grubbey. They make you pay for a "Pro License" to get more silos and added boosts and other improvements that you have to spend gold eggs on to get. I mean it's a F2P mobile game but I had to laugh when I upgraded something with gold eggs I earned in-game to find that level two of this upgrade (out of, like, 100) costs 3000 eggs which is about $10. The gains for some of those upgrades are minuscule compared to the amount it costs to buy them or save up ones you've earned.

You should be fine if you go through the guild and add everyone there, but if not, just jump into either of the chat channels and its usually full of people saying "add me for hearts" or some poo poo.

I tend to go through and clear out any inactive friends if they havent been on for 3 or more days, unless they have heroes I really need for unions or something.

Weird, I've also recently (as of last week) gotten back into Egg Inc, and noticed the same thing, but with Homescapes. I used to play that game a bit, and my wife still plays it regularly. The ads for it are ridiculous and have absolutely nothing to do with the game. Also, they look far, far worse than the game does, as it actually has a pretty polished look and feel to it, unlike the ads for it. Austin (the guy who fixed up the home in the game) is tied to a bed that's on fire, and the person playing during the ad has to pick from one of two choices to help him break each thing holding him down. The end up failing, and so I guess Austin dies in a fire.

Literally none of that happens in Homescapes. It's a Candy Crush style game with an over-arching 'plot' of Austin fixing up a house. Every level you beat gets you a star or something, and you then use a given number of those stars to fix up an element of a room. That's it. No one's on fire, dude's not tied to a bed. I don't understand :psyduck:

Back to Egg Inc, I was pleasantly surprised to have gotten an in-game refund on a bunch of stuff I had spent golden eggs on last time I played, like time warps. The game is still a pointless grind, but goddammit, I WILL get 50 million medicinal eggs for 250k of Soul Eggs :argh: I'm already 30% of the way there.

It seems to be over the last year or so, more and more adverts show gameplay which is nothing to do with the actual game itself.
And if people leave a review complaining that the advert was misleading, the devs just respond saying they outsource the adverts and don't have control over the content!

I'd be willing to bet that's exactly what it is. Either people are stripping basic assets and putting them into a bot, or bots are assembling common features of ads that work and then minimum wage animators assemble something that fulfils those features.

I suspect that the people behind it are getting ad referral bonuses for clickthrough and installation, so they've gone balls to the wall to manipulate kids into installing, even if they install the game and then never play it. Or maybe it points you toward a malware infested clone of a game, or points you to a game which aggressively tricks kids into buying MTX, which they get a cut of.

The one I see a lot is a guy in armour who is trapped in a box, and it looks like the player has to pull out pins to either flood his part of the level with water, lava or treasure. Only as you say, it seems like the person 'playing' the ad deliberately gets it wrong. I suspect that it's to tweak your empathy and at the same time make the viewer think that they could do it better.

I'll admit there have been a few times that I've seen the ad and found myself trying to work out the 'right' way to do it, and then feeling mildly frustrated enough to want to install it and have a go myself. Which is then immediately overwritten by my internet sense which is screaming TRAP at me.

Yeah, the rabbit hole goes deep with this poo poo. We're really in need of some regulations because right now it's the wild west on finding the most predatory and psychological way to get kids to buy IAP, while being well over the line in terms of ethics. I think the worst offenders are the games that get advertised in-game and have "playable" demos that aren't actually gameplay. It's egregious what the mobile gaming industry has become.

It's 100% the second one. It's very overt a lot of the time with a fake 'button' saying 'now you try' or words to that effect. It's a good trick; even though when you download the game and find it's literally an entirely different genre, you probably won't stick around. But like anything on the internet, if like 1% of people decide to hang around and play the 'real' game, it's still worth it.

Amusing side note: I downloaded AFK Arena because I saw an ad for it that made it look like an action RPG. But then I got hooked. So the system works!

I have a suspicion that ad referral is playing a role. A looong time ago I was involved in running a porn tumblr and got involved in advertising speak.

You get paid to display ads, sure. But you get paid a shitload more if you can get people to click on the ads. If you can get someone to fulfil an action on the other side of the ad (i.e. buy from the store, install the app or pay for a subscription), the referral code kicks in and you get a LOT more money.

At no point was I in contact with any of the sites I was scraping galleries from, I just applied through ccbill, plugged my number into the link they gave me, and linked it to the preview images hoping someone would click on one. Entirely automated and anyone can get in on it.

So what I think is happening is that these ads aren't even being designed by the makers of the game, they're designed by a third party who is getting referral money whenever someone clicks through and installs it. Basically youtube bot farms have worked out how to monetise gaming ads, so it's not going to be long until they get into weird feedback loops and we start seeing spiderman / elsa poo poo.

My favourite ads are the ones that are literally copy-pasted across multiple games - it's a tower defense where someone is telling you to build a tower to defend against a single army attacking your base. Do so, then they tell you to build a farm. Then you have more time to build more farms and towers against simple units coming to attack your base. Then you get congratulated and referred to the play store.

I have seen this ad for at least three different games, including the Final Fantasy XV kingdom builder, and they are literally exactly the same except for assets.

I've grown to like MTX in theory, but with the proviso that there are a poo poo ton of regulations that need to be introduced to restrict their abuse. Warnings if you go over £10 a day, if you do £5 three days in a row, if the amount you spend on a single game ever goes over £50. Nothing should ever be premium only, all code must be sufficient to allow refunds as per distanced selling regulations, proof of age required to enable any MTX.

I don't know much about Gundam but I'm a fan of gachas so I clicked the link. The reviews are heavy on the 1-star, and I know you can't go by those, but there needs to be a better system than someone whining about their one specific issue like "ZOMG it won't run on my 6 year old phone, 1 star!!!! Will update to 5-star once it works!" That's now how review systems are meant to work. The other thing I see WAY too much is sometimes you'll get a "breakdown" of the reviews, like controls/graphics/gameplay. I see a lot of games that are like "4.5 stars!!! Controls: 2.4, Graphics, 1.5, Gameplay 2.2." How is that allowed?

the game's good, it's just a bit graphics-intensive so it doesn't run on their lovely phones. right now i'm rerolling for the featured gundam's parts, at least the process is easy. and the 4★ rate is very high; in all of my multi-pulls i've only had one without a 4★ part in it

Do the contract farms reset after the contract is over?

I just made a farm and then started a coop and posted it in the reddit thread. it filled up in a minute and a couple of the people seem to have big farms as they completed the first 2 parts of the contract instantly.
