I don't think their NBA coverage is that good outside of the draft but it probably depends on the beat writer and how much of a tolerance for Zach Harper trying out his stand up set you have

Yeah the national coverage is meh

The Raptors beat reports rule though. Blake Murphy is the best.

When I was 17, my father was so stupid, I didn't want to be seen with him in public. When I was 24, I was amazed at how much the old man had learned in just 7 years.
How likely I am to re-subscribe is going to be based on the level of coverage on the University of Arizona. I am giving the benefit of the doubt because I started my sub in Arizona Basketball's downest time, and like I don't need a weekly football story in June or whatever. But with football season close I am hoping it picks up (as I wrote this post I went to see when the last time they talked about the team and there was an article from 2 hours ago which was nice).

Draft coverage is great but I can just go month to month for that. Lakers coverage . . . I'm saturated on Lakers coverage already.

Avoiding Chicago sport's writers editorials or opinions in general on sports seems like a really good reason to read the Athletic as a Bulls fan.

I mostly love all the content I see on The Athletic, as they have a great collection of writers. But I cannot stand the layout of the site as it makes finding some good content that might be outside the sphere of your chosen sports/teams that you follow very hard.

Athletic Ink is basically a collection of the best long form stuff from across the site. But I agree with you for the most part.

I don't mind that the granular team level stuff is mostly left on the team specific pages since there's too much to really feature it all on the front page, but I do really wish they had a decent search function.

You may remember a few years back a reporter in Chicago was mocked for asking a dumb question during a post-game interview.

Turns out she was going through a lot of stuff. Makes sense as she was always a really good reporter in Chicago.

The official account of NFL Tackle Phil Loadholt.

Let's talk Football.
If you're a hockey fan The Athletic is practically indispensable. I have to say solely on the basis of Minnesota coverage of hockey and collegiate sports I'm happy. But I really like when they get all the writers to collaborate on big fun pieces like "Best Game I Ever Saw" or stuff like that. Also I've read a few long form pieces that truly blew me away.

Long form article on Jordin Tootoo: https://theathletic.com/905707/2019/04/05/jordin-tootoo-returns-home-with-a-mission-to-save-others-from-his-brothers-fate/
Long form on Ray Emery: https://theathletic.com/813857/2019/02/19/what-really-happened-to-ray-emery/

Both of those were done by Dan Robson and both are emotionally gut punching stories. Really great stuff. he did a lot of great Raptors coverage this past NBA season too.

congrats to deadspin for taking a month to quietly correct one of the dumber "heh, gotcha" :smug: takes they've had in a while.

They also managed to ignore that the USMNT had already made a statement months beforehand.

I wonder if they'll use it as a compiler of content from some of the team specific sites, or if it's just them throwing Spencer in with the rest of the flagship CFB writers?

When afootballwebsite.com is up it will be part of Vox but not SBNation and will have:

Alex Kirshner
Brian Floyd
Bud Elliott
Holly Anderson
Jason Kirk
Richard Johnson
Ryan Nanni
Spencer Hall
Steven Godfrey

As its writers / podcasters / whatevers. It launches on the 21st.

Both of these things are true. The content of the articles is always super boring and they should just give us a few bullet points so we don't have to wade through "I emailed 12 different people and after not getting a response for 7 weeks, I decided to find 15 other people to email and that was also a dead end but finally I walked into his office and he answered my question" meandering bullshit. I get that they're trying to paint a picture of how hard it is to get answers to their questions, but its just super boring to read.

But yeah its also true that this type of poo poo is super important in our current capitalist system. Shine loving lights on all the lovely people.
