AITA for telling bar security that a girl there was underage?

quote:

I work at a hospital as a nurse. A couple weeks ago I was talking to one of the nursing assistants who I was friendly with but never hung out with outside of work. She told me about her hopes about going to nursing school one day, and I asked her age and she replied that she was 19, and I encouraged her and told her she had more than enough time to start college and get her degree.

Three weeks later, I went to a bar downtown by myself for one of my rare nights off on a weekend. This bar is pretty popular in my town, they have live music almost every day and it’s always packed. They always have security posted outside and inside. I go there fairly often enough to the point where now I’m learning the names of the security staff and have made acquaintances with them. So obviously I was pretty torn when I saw the nursing assistant there with her friends, holding a drink.

I quickly slipped away so that she didn’t see me. I debated for a while but eventually one of the security staff approached me to say hi and I ended up telling him that she was underage and I knew for a fact she was 19 because she had just told me 3 weeks ago. He immediately kicked her and her friends out. I’m not sure if he took her fake.

I feel bad because I probably ruined the rest of her summer sneaking into bars. But I feel justified knowing that she could’ve gotten in a lot more trouble later and that could’ve compromised her getting into nursing school, or even getting trouble with our employer.

Did I totally overstep, or did I do the right thing?

Edit: we’re American. Laws here are 21+, not 18 or 16 in other countries

I am the math man.

AITA for joking about my genetic disorder?

quote:

I have a rare genetic disorder that causes my body to produce almost no testosterone. It means that without taking medications my body wouldn't develop sexually. Genitals wouldn't grow, i wouldn't develop any typical male's traits and i wouldn't experience sexual attraction. If the disorder is detected early the puberty can be standard, just a little bit late. My wasn't.

It is pretty obvious that my parents hosed up. I told them that i was concerned about my puberty a couple times but they said i was a late bloomer. I accepted it and waited patiently. When i was 18 i raised the subject again. I went to the doctor and got diagnosed.

In brief: I am an 18 years old with vestigial genitalia and asexual body makeup, no sexuall attraction and i will likely be infertile. This all could be avoided if my parents took me to the doctor when i was young.

I was very sad when i found out, and so were my parents. I don't blame them (openly) but my mom knows it's their fault and is apologetic about it. She gets very sad whenever this subject comes up. It was very hard for me too, but as i have a cheerfull character i try to turn my sadness into the jokes. The jokes are something like this:

Sister: I wonder who will marry first in our family. You are the oldest so you should be first!

Me: Well but you are not an asexual gnome so i will give you the primacy.

If anyone else told joke like this i would get very angry, but when i make them I'm ok with it. But my mom gets very annoyed whenever i say something like this. She gets upset and asks me not to joke about it.

I don't get it. If i do not mind jokes like this neither should she. I get that their neglect (kind of) ruined my life and she regrets that but she can't just get sad whenever i mention my condition. AITA for refusing to stop joking about it?

Edit: I don't joke about this to make her feel bad as some of you suggested.

being realistic here, if an underage person gets caught drinking in a bar by the cops (or gets picked up drunk and blabs about where they got booze) the bar can get turbofucked over it.

it's a lovely set of laws but it is what it is. i personally err on the side of "it's the doorman's problem" but i totally get why someone would make it theirs with this in mind, if they're particularly attached to a specific bar or bartender.

Accused of playing with myself 3 times within a week, looking out my 3rd floor bedroom window, one of the days I was in with a friend and he accounts for my activities that day. Life in the balance. UK

quote:

So the other day I (22M) was taken into Police Custody and interviewed because 2 female witnesses had "seen me masturbating at my window" on 3 occasions whilst they were stopped at a junction across the road, 3 floors below. On the 2nd occasion, Witness A had said they saw a poster hanging in my room, this was used as evidence at the time of my arrest. I've been down to the road and find it insane anyone could see into my room considering glare and angle, let alone make out a poster hanging 10ft behind my window, I'm not even sure the angle works for that without some form of magnification. On that occasion, my friend was over and he accounts I was barely alone for a minute or two and we went out around 17.20, the incident is cited to have occured between 17.00 and 18.00.

The junction is next to a shop where I know many members of staff and they know me and where I live/work. I find it crazy that I would do this in their direct line of sight. Both of my jobs require disclosure so I have a lot to lose, I also have a gf of 5 years who'm I'll have to tell soon. I've spoken to the friend who agrees my alibi, I'm just wondering how they can use 2 witness's to charge me of 3 seperate sexual offences. Do I have a leg to stand on as they have no hard proof?

Correct, but it's worth noting that it's actually more than just inertia; it's actually gotten worse in the past few decades.

In the 60's through the early 80's, underage drinking wasn't nearly as big of a deal in the US. There was actually a low-alcohol version of beer known as "three-two beer" with 3.2% alcohol by volume that was legally available to the 18-20 crowd in most states. There was a decent amount of political support for reducing the drinking age, under the same "if we can send you to die in Korea or 'Nam, you should probably be allowed to drink" theory that lowered the voting age. And even if you were busted for drinking illegally, the cops would just make you pour out your current drink, hand over the rest of the liquor bottle/case of beer/whatever and then just basically let you go with a perfunctory warning - basically a 'kids will be kids' shrug-off.

However, in the 80's, once Mothers Against Drunk Driving and similar organizations really started emphasizing the dangers of drinking-and-driving, that *all* changed. See, many of the drunk driving deaths were teens or college-age kids, so the cause of "let's stop drunk drivers from killing people" became inextricably linked with "...and teens/kids are a huge percentage of drunken drivers, so let's stop underage drinking too". The support for lowering the drinking age disappeared, specialty beers for the underage crowd vanished after laws were changed to remove them, and enforcement of underage drinking rules (for both the drinker and whoever served it) got much much stricter.

AITA for what I said to my ex-boyfriend when he told me he got his karate black belt?

quote:

I broke up with my ex about 5 months ago and since I spent the better part of the summer in Europe we didn’t have any awkward run ins.

Well last night I went out with some friends and was in line to get in a club and lo and behold my ex and his new girlfriend (the one with whom he cheated on me) ended up in line right behind us. It was one of those crazy situations where we had to say hello but neither of us wanted to.

He asked me how Europe was, I asked him how he was doing. He said something that sounded insulting to me like “well now that I don’t have all the drama, I was finally able to get my black belt.”

With this tone and body language all I could think of was that dorky “I studied the blade” meme so I said I said in a very mocking tone “I studied the blaaaaaadeeee.”

He looked at me and his girlfriend asked me what that was supposed to mean. I said it was just came out and it was a joke. She said it was really lovely to make a snarky remark about something he worked so hard for. I said she was sort of proving my joke to be true. He said I haven’t changed and was still a hitch and they left the line.

I thought it was funny, my girl friends thought it was funny but my one guy friend said I crossed a line.
