Thing is though he can be funny if he wants to be... it's just that the American evening viewing audience doesn't want that.

Like seriously have you watched any of the "late night" shows? Colbert, Conan, Jimmy Fallon? It's all just the lamest kind of humour. All the 'jokes' are just stating really obvious stuff or saying something and then showing a picture of a photoshop or something for the punchline.

"Trump did a thing today, he's an idiot"
*HAHAHAHAHAHA*

I went to see some stand-up nights over there with my ex mostly in Cincinnati and it's a very different thing as well. It felt like people were there to get their money's worth of laughs for the night and they just laughed at any lovely old observation or joke. The first time I might have been suspicious that the venue had had stuffed the place with people paid to laugh but my ex was joining in too. Seems Americans are a lot more kind to stand-ups

Ah yes, they were absolutely going to start attacking the Tories this summer, absolutely, that's when they were going to start attacking the Tories, yes indeed. If only, if only, they'd had a chance to start doing that earlier, but alas! Might have thought a little introspection was in order about precisely why a left-leaning membership didn't like them and why they hadn't engaged with their CLP earlier, if they're that worried.

Also, isn't Thangam Debbonaire quite popular locally or am I misremembering?

Love how the article says that they have to spend all their time and resources buttering up the membership, as if they haven't simply realised that they are completely hosed and are desperately trying to claw back support before the inevitable happens.

I'm in Bristol West so WOOOOAAAAHHHHHHH OOHHHHHHH Thangam Debbonaire is my MP. I don't have any real issue with her and I don't think there's any real issue with her, though I suppose the CLP might want to open up selection if there's somebody they're really behind.

At the very beginning (years ago now around the founding of momentum) there were rumblings about getting her out but she's either actually shaped up a bit and shown she will listen to the membership or my links to the CLP have become complicit in her network and aren't agitating against it any more.

SPADs are - as I understand it - officially contractors working for a given minister, so their contract ends when the minister moves.

e: Oh you mean sacking for leaking? Probably not, I'm certain they'll have a contract clause allowing that and with the above (and the way the Tories have hosed over employment law) they're probably hosed.

Yah, even if it is illegal it's not like anyone will care, or like they would contest it given that they will care a lot more about the success of their party than their country, and won't want to do anything to impede it.

They can all loving eat themselves.

But also, there's no eyeroll big enough for 'we're firing all these people for not being incompetent enough to believe Brexiting with no deal in 3 loving months is good, actually'.

This is a great read and i particularly like this bit

quote:

Of course, if it’s all so rosy, people will ask why the party isn’t way ahead in the polls, especially against this divided and useless government. But now, with the nation in crisis, it’s not that easy to forge ahead. It could just as easily be said: if remain is so great, why isn’t the demand for a People’s Vote way ahead in the polls, especially set against such divisive and useless Brexit negotiations for the past three years?

Yes, basically. A few of the Labour right also voted for the bill, but Labour whipped to abstain, IIRC because the Tories had an absolute majority anyway, so voting no was pointless as it wouldn't affect the decision, and would have been divisive at the time, and because it was a manifesto commitment on the part of the Tories, and tradition dictates not opposing manifesto commitments or some bullshit.
