I get the sense that for some folks, modding a Bethesda game is like "souping up a classic car," in that there's endless tuning in an enclosed area, it's never really driven, and the end result is really gaudy and super delicate.

this is a great analogy. modding is more about the experience of creating the perfect mod set-up. once you are done playing it is a secondary exersize (but who are we kidding you never reach the perfect mod set up)

Daggerfall's weird to me, since I had friends playing it when it came out, and telling me all about how amazing it was in school. So I've always internalized it as "A good, classic game that's perhaps too old to play now".

Syndicate was the same thing, but it really appealed to me even though I could never buy it. So when I finally got around to it as an adult, I immediately noticed a logic loophole in how income in generated (in real time) vs how it's spent (per mission). Cue me leaving PC on overnight and ruining the game for myself forever.

Some things are better left dead.

A lot of it is done in-house and/or through the aid of people that know most about it (former contracted devs etc.)

Wait, you get interest from storing money in the bank?

Christ, there's so much stuff in the game I never knew about when I was a dumb 16 year old and didn't have the Internet to help me. For instance I never knew about the recall spell. I always had to trudge back trough the dungeons like an idiot. :v:

i think so, but thats not what i was talking about. you can take out loans in Daggerfall, up to like 55,000gp. if you don't pay the loan back then men in plate armor come to "collect" it from you. fortunately Daggerfall has like 30 provinces and each one has a separate banking system. so you can take out loans in a dozen provinces, then skip town on the loan collectors and buy a house/boat/horse elsewhere with the letter of credit

Mods are good when they fix/add things the developers didn't finish. Knights of the Old Republic 2 had a ton of almost-finished poo poo in there that people went back and cleaned up and added back in.

Also mods are good when they are this:

Maybe they could trade it to Nintendo for one of the IPs that Nintendo is completely squandering, like Metroid.

It's been in development for a really long time, they tried to make it without Retro (the studio that did the first 3 Prime games), and it was apparently so bad that they scrapped it entirely, and as of January, Retro has been developing the new attempt.

It's the classic Miyamoto "A delayed game is eventually good, a bad game is bad forever" mentality and I'm perfectly ok with it in this case.

haha no. They announced it with a Youtube video "teaser" that was literally just a title card and then a year later announced that it sucked so they scrapped it and are going to start again.

I highly suspect that they were never even working on it and made the video to get people to shut up about Metroid for a little while.

I don't see anything wrong with admitting "we tried, it was bad, we're trying again with the original studio"

I think if more devs could afford to admit "this is bad and it needs way more work/a total redesign" we'd have a lot less lovely games, but the fact that games are getting released essentially unfinished these days doesn't really bode well for that.

veni veni veni

if it's true that Retro is actually working on it now, it's good they scrapped it and started over then and I'm fine with waiting. I thought it was still in limbo after being canceled.

Exploration is ill-advised.
Apparently they tried a more compartmentalised approach to development and it turned out to not work at all. But yeah, Nintendo was surprisingly up front about it. I think they're pretty aware that Metroid has a pretty devoted and tetchy fanbase that they don't need to piss off unnecessarily, because it turns out that antagonising your consumer base for no reason is dumb as hell, who'da thought?

Apparently they can't think of a new gimmick for F-Zero. ...you know, they could totally do a Battle Royale mode, like the destruction derby mode in F-Zero X but everyone is a player.

Similar note: MP3’s Wiimote controls sucked rear end and I wanted nothing more than to just go back to using a GC controller.

Hell, MP3 in general kinda sucked.

I appreciate that, but I think I want something a little more customizable than a prefab Android box. Kodi looks like it might fit that bill.

I don't know what the thread's opinion on VR is, I've mostly figured it to be kind of fun but an otherwise overly-expensive gimmick which is why I never bought one, but a friend of a friend offered to sell me his old PSVR for like $100 bucks so I figured it'd be fun to give it a shot.

I was thinking about picking up Skyrim VR since that's a game I already know pretty well and would be a good point of contrast, but are there any other ones work checking out?

VR has a lot of potential, and my Oculus is pretty neato bandito.

SUPERHOT VR is easily the best VR game I've played yet, but I haven't bought that many. I think a lot of the meme-y, jokey games are fun for about 20 minutes, then you wonder why you gave someone $15 for this "game" and try to justify it by making friends try it. Beatsaber is great if you're not worried about looking like a complete moron to everyone who sees you playing.

I can't speak to PSVR, but I find it really nice to use a set of goggles sitting in a chair or lying in bed and using Bigscreen to do work or just surf the internet. VRChat is also good.

Astro Bot, Resident Evil 7, Moss. There's actually dozens of good games for it now but those are good place to start. Not sure if he included move controllers but also check out Blood and Truth and Until Dawn if he did.
