I know nothing about cryptocurrency, but couldn't someone use a botnet to bruteforce pass a version of that blockchain that just adds in a person with umpity-million cryptomonies? I mean, isn't that how it works is just "the version of the chain that spreads more is the one that 'wins'"?

I inherited 1200 acres of farmland and it’s a toss up each year whether the government is going to subsidize me for ethanol or pay me to just let the land lie fallow. I’m tired of the farm life and I’d rather just sell everything for 30 million dollars but then my bitch sister would get half of it whereas if I just keep farming I can cook the books to show her there’s little profit plus I use the same books to cheat on my taxes.

Yeah, I get it. The cruelty is the point and all that.

Not only that, but the fact is SNAP money goes back to farmers and what not because people are buying produce with the benefits.

But yeah, that way they can't buy a shopping cart full of chips if they get a box of lowest bidder processed meat and vegetable slurry.

So you're going to walk away from $15 million dollars to spite your sister over some land you don't want anyway?

assuming that wasn't just an unsourced quote, the idea is that keeping the farm and using it as a means of enabling your current lifestyle is easier and probably more consistent than taking a one-time pay out. if the govt is paying you not to touch the field (or otherwise subsidizing the enterprise) you really aren't out anything but whatever personal effort it takes to keep those subsidies rolling in. on top of that it's a business, so there's all kinds of tax fraud loop holes you can exploit, plus you could use it to launder other money or a bunch of other shady poo poo.

$15M is a lot of money for most people, but you'd have to compare that against whatever it is you're effectively "making" by keeping the farm operating (or not operating) over however many more years you think you can keep the scam going. plus you're probably not getting all $15M after taxes, etc etc

There's also very likely a spite factor in there. OP probably has said farm because he stayed and lived there, and got loopholed into it, therefore the sister doesn't deserve half of it.

Yeah lmao imagine if they only got like $10m, or even only $5m or $3m! How can someone possibly live on that?? Definitely not enough money to just buy a small condo in a decent neighborhood and gently caress off doing nothing for the rest of your life.

i wasn't intending to support the unsourced quote, i was just explaining the mindset behind it. it's not like it's particularly difficult to imagine what / how / why someone that's greedy & selfish would reach those conclusions. "get your gubmint hands off all of this wealth i inherited through no merit of my own earned via hard work!" is extremely obvious boomer energy

Evangelicals got into abortion because all their political positions showed them to be immoral. And evangelism without self-righteousness is nothing.

Evangelicals got into abortion because it was a proxy fight against desegregation. They didn't care about it before, but Nixon went to the racism well and came back with a bunch of voters who will vote for anyone as long as they are sticking it to non-white people in some way.

So there you have it, the rationale is the same as literally every other right-wing rationale. Be. More. Racist.

yeah that's the entire reason the network uses as much energy as a small country, it's all entirely useless computation just done to make sure no one group can control the "majority" of the power needed to rewrite the chain

VitalSigns
Sep 3, 2011

There's attacks you can do if you gain control of 51% of the computing power being used to calculate bitcoin hashes, but it's not something you can do with a "botnet". The calculations for bitcoin are now all done on application-specific hardware built to be able to rapidly calculate cryptographic hashes and nothing else. General-purpose processors can't compete, even if you took over thousands of people's computers with a worm and directed them to calculate hashes you wouldn't come anywhere close to out-computing all the cryptograpy specific hardware out there.

Even if you did somehow get control of 51% of the computing power, the most you could practically do is steal from people by reversing your own transactions (this is called a double-spend attack, don't look it up the details are as boring and stupid as everything else bitcoin). You can't actually alter the transaction log and invent a bunch of coins (well, practically speaking you can't, theoretically it's possible to create a new transaction log that has what you want in it, but in order for the network to accept it as real it would have to generate the same cryptographic hash as the real log. Without getting too technical, I'll just say that all of our secure communication is based on the assumption that finding two numbers with the same hash would take eons and eons. If you came up with a way to do that calculation within an ordinary human lifespan then you've just broken all public secure communications and you'd make a lot more money stealing real money from banks and financial institutions rather than counterfeiting dumb internet coins. Well really you wouldn't even need to steal, if you solved that calculation problem you would win the Fields medal and also you could found your own information security company and be a kajillionaire).

Not sure how easy it is now, but back in the days of the old GBS thread some goon said he was doing the most laughably easy ponzi scheme. Bitcoiners were desperate to do something with their coins so it was really easy for even new people on the forum to get small loans. Goon supposedly got a few loans on burner accounts and used them to pay off loans on a "main" account. After a few weeks of building up a reputation as a good borrower, he could get $500 loans and just bail on them with no recourse. He got told to, you know, not brag about criminal activities on the forum anymore so no idea how long it went, but yeah, it's easier to just scam people than try anything too novel.
