Well he did get a mere 73% of the vote in 2017 (majority 33,215).

Paradoxically Sensible MP's like Nick Clegg and Danny Alexander are rewarded for their pragmatic and reasonable dedication to voting with the Tory whip and would never lose their seats, even though they did to complete outside no hopers. And there's no chance of Conservative MP's losing their seats, especially if they're on the Cabinet, even though they're all on razor thin majorities and even Boris Johnson's seat is up for grabs. Almost as if there's some, I dunno, internal bias that tells the media that everyone's secretly conservative and that left wing politics will be defeated easily that goes in direct contrast with reality.

Johnson has a majority of around 5,000 and Labour gained in his constituency in 2017. Swinson has a similar majority and won her seat back off the SNP who took it from her in 2015. I'd think either or both of them are far more likely to lose their seats than Corbyn.

I need one of you good people to explain to me in very simple terms - as if to a baby - what exactly Chris Williamson did wrong. So many otherwise on point people are piling on him but looking at the actual stuff he's said I'm really not getting it. At worst he can be accused of bad optics + poor communication, but eh. Yes, I know he's clearly an opportunist and has a less than amazing history with supporting PFI etc, but on this particular topic a whole lot of people seem to be losing it over something that's just invisible to me. Maybe that's privilege showing, I don't know, but I'd like to understand it. E: here's one such thread - most of the people involved are generally solid take-havers from what I've seen. https://twitter.com/Mc_Heckin_Duff/status/1160169704050352128?s=19 But Williamson is right here - though again perhaps communicating poorly. Class analysis is integral to socialism and issues of identity must be seen in the context of class relationships. Many of his critics seem to be arguing that there is some form of conceptual equivalence between class and identity groups, which is plainly wrong. E2: see, this garbage is what I mean. It's just demonstrating a total misunderstanding of the basics of socialist theory. Marx would have a stroke if was still alive. https://twitter.com/ArkadyB61/status/1160173323223015425?s=19 The whole CW debacle is really exposing some of the fault lines in the contemporary 'left'. I'm not certain it's right to outright attack either side here as both have a point (crude class reductionism is bad, so is misunderstanding the unique importance of class at the conceptual level) and that's just handing ammo to the right, but I really do feel like it's important to emphasise what class analysis and class consciousness actually is, and more to the point show how it actually complements intersectional struggle rather than sidelining it. E3: tl:dr class is not an identity ffs lads ThomasPaine fucked around with this message at 14:34 on Aug 10, 2019 |

Williamson mostly just keeps opening his gob and putting his foot in it. Like he's consistently not good at communicating, even with a charitable interpretation. Which is not really a good thing for an MP?

There's class in the Marxist sense, and there's class in the traditional British class system sense, and they're kind of related but also at the same time completely different. This leads to a lot of crossed wires. Just a shame to see good people twist themselves in knots as a result. We really need to be better at separating them conceptually.
