Good news!!!

quote:

Government profits double in four years as immigration laws tighten and visa fees rise

Year after year, to pay to live in the UK, whatever the status, has gone up and up. Immigration costs are indiscriminate. It's like a game of snakes and ladders: a failed application for technical reasons sends the individual back to the beginning to start all over again, and to pay all over again.

The figures show that profits from immigration fees in 2014 totalled £260m. Last year those profits doubled, to £500m.

Take Child Citizenship for example. In 2014 the fee was £669, the cost of processing just £144. By the end of last year the fee was £1012, while the actual cost to the Home Office was only £372. Last year's profits were £24m.

In some areas of immigration, the costs to the applicant have soared, while the Home Office costs have actually fallen.

Take Indefinite Leave to Remain. In 2014 the fee was £1093, while processing costs were £248. Four years on, that fee had more than double to £2389, while Home Office costs had actually dropped, to £243.

Sorry i meant bad news

Well he’s got a nice one now that I totally don’t mind getting for him, I was just pissed off that he passed over two opportunities then tried to make out like it was his mums fault he wasn’t ready this morning. I was fully on board with needing to hand out ties and help do them up - who wears a tie these days - just expected they could sort themselves out with, for example, trousers.

Anyway his plate at the wake was seventeen sausage rolls plus a bowl of monster munch so I’ve warmed up to him a lot.

I'd go for sometime between the two. There's something quite final and mechanical about sorting out someone's personal stuff and partitioning it up into who gets what and what gets sold and then it's all over, so sometime before then but after the wake. Make a little time (tea or something, nothing formal) for it.

I've never done keepsake boxes, but we've done the "go through all their old slides/polaroids/whatever as a small group" thing, and that's usually done around then. I've no idea how that's going to go as the digital age people start dying.

Wannabe strong lads and lasses: start out with something simple and linear (Starting Strength, Greyskull LP) then when that stops working, move to something intermediate and linear (Madcow, Bill Starr 5x5) or bodybuilding (Cavefish)/powerlifting (5/3/1) specific.

And don't be scared of the gym! Stick your headphones in, ignore everyone, lift weights. There will always be someone stronger (and weaker) than you, so don't let ego be a barrier :)

My big issue with going to proper lifting (other than the barrier to entry of it needing to be moved to and from, but that's my own problem, rather than a general one) is learning proper technique. Getting it wrong can gently caress you up, and getting it right takes some training, surely?

I've started doing some dumbbell work at home and I'm mostly fine, but anything with the dumbbells over my head is killing my lower back. I'm reducing the weight and trying to work out whether it's just core weakness or a posture thing, but other than that I'm mostly learning form from YouTube and not cranking the weight up too quickly.

The starting strength book goes in depth with all the lifts and their motions, focusing on proper form. I don't do SS as a program but the book was really useful to begin with. That, along with youtube videos, and then the Form Check thread in YLLS and it's hard to go wrong. Just remember to start out light and only go up in weights if you can keep the proper form.

e: And a bonus Brexit! article from the Graun: How we met - ‘When he got through passport control, I was deliriously happy!’

quote:

A few months later, Nkosi came to the UK so he could meet her family and friends. Clara waited at Gatwick for him. Hours passed. “Finally I got a call, about five or six hours after his plane landed, saying he was being detained and questioned.” She was interviewed a couple of times on the phone, sitting in an airport cafe. “Eventually they told me he was going to be sent back to Trinidad and Tobago, that they weren’t satisfied that he was coming here on a holiday to see his girlfriend.”

Clara managed to find out where Nkosi was being held and, having missed the visiting hours, she pleaded to be able to see him. She was told she had 15 minutes. “It was pretty bittersweet,” she says. The obstacles to being together, says Nkosi, “made me work harder – that became the inspiration”.

Clara had qualified as a primary school teacher and for the next two years went to Tobago every school holiday. Nkosi tried again to come to the UK last year. This time, despite being questioned for several hours again, he was allowed to enter. “When he got through, I was almost delirious with happiness,” says Clara.

Friendship with all nations indeed.

(he still doesn't get to live in the UK despite them now being married mind you, that was just to visit)

Coaching or getting someone to check your form (in-person or recorded) is quite important before doing heavier lifts, especially squats and deadlifts. Speaking from personal experience as I got two disk bulges from a bad squat :v:

A word of warning - I have seen trainers at my gym teaching some insanely bad form on both squat and deadlift, and would recommend the YLLS form check thread if you're comfortable with recording yourself and constructive criticism.

Also, Alan Thrall's form videos on youtube are great for learning squat/deadlift/OHP, and vicsnatural is a good bodybuilding-centric resource if you want to get curls etc correct.
