Josef bugman posted:I think they just want to have power. Ask why it should be the other folks and not Corbyn, if it doesn't matter who heads it why would you care so much about Corbyn leading it? Exactly. There's no even remotely reasonable argument for why Corbs should be unacceptable as a supposedly powerless one-issue caretaker PM but somebody else would be fine. It makes zero sense in any way and it's why the lib dem posturing will fail even harder than it's done already.

I think it actually stopped them. Pointing out that Corbyn is the person who is supposed to be doing this put the burden of proof on them as to why it should be someone else, so they've gone quiet. Previously they had said that they'd rather Blair negotiate it than Corbyn. When the only thing you actually believe is "I loving hate Corbyn and what he represents", they will quite happily pivot to whatever position allows that to continue. Even if they've set themselves up as an Ultra #FBPE. The fact that the two strands of "Secret Nandos Leaver Corbyn (who hates Jews)", and "Stop No Deal at any cost" have now collided, and Corbyn now represents the best way to prevent No Deal, means they have to show their true colours

No these people really seem to have swallowed their own 'Corbyn is an A N T I S E M I T E and is also a ruthless authoritarian' bullshit wholesale, despite his personal history showing that he's the exact opposite. It's genuinely very baffling, it's like they heard 'attack their strengths' and really went for it so hard they ended up forgetting it was a smear campaign. I'd really like to read an analysis on these types honestly, because they do seem to genuinely believe it now, rather than just cynically using spurious allegations. https://twitter.com/make_trouble/status/1161912384849612801?s=19 https://twitter.com/make_trouble/status/1161974996245385217?s=19 https://twitter.com/Sara_Rose_G/status/1162016768363237376?s=19 https://twitter.com/AdenHallam/status/1162051237174566918?s=19 ThomasPaine fucked around with this message at 11:44 on Aug 16, 2019 |

the thing about hard remainers is that they are single-issuers, so any amount of vacillating is acceptable if ultimately the single issue is delivered so, you should fully expect a great deal of bluffing until the day the Commons actually expresses confidence in a new government - on that day, any Remain party/rebel will not see any punishment for saying "given new assurances by JC I have now changed my mind" from remainers, as long as JC does appear to not altering Labour strategy on the fly (and remember, promises to be a time-limited caretaker PM have no legal force whatsoever). So they may as well try for something better in the meanwhile. The first step of actually passing a VONC hasn't even occurred yet still, realism at this point would require recognizing that the Commons has thrice demonstrated itself capable of a majority disapproving of some course on Brexit but not in favour of any other course, so the comedy option of simply failing to form a government (and hence going to the ballot box by default, and relying on the generosity of the EU negotiators to extend even beyond the final final deadline, like the most petulant naughty schoolchild) remains a plausible one
