Hopefully unless you need to travel outside the country the practical impact will be limited, can't see them rounding up all 3 million EU non-citizens legislation or not. Might want to avoid changing jobs or housing around that time though, at least until legislation recognising the settled status rules is introduced.

Anyway, they go into the ring and then they beat the bejeesus out of each other and it's magical. Big beefy boys hitting each other in the chest until they are red raw. crispix posted:Really just out of Sunday boredom here that I ask this question. So, centrists/melts as we identify them now - the people who get on our tits by being sufficiently privileged to be able to refuse to recognise the inevitable necessity of ideology in politics and who in most cases are so terminally sheltered and cosseted in their lives that they demand others accept this. Where have all these fuckers come from? I feel like a lot of it's down to Thatcher winning and ushering in this neoliberal era where everyone can be rich and successful with an exciting consumerist lifestyle if they just apply themselves, which was obviously an appealing idea. Then Blair showed up and basically remade Labour in that image, where you could have all that stuff without feeling you were betraying your working class roots - so you get the Cool Britannia poo poo where yr Noel Gallagher types are happy to swan around with the elites because hey, it's still Labour, I get to enjoy the FYGM lifestyle without believing that's what it is! Blair saw a way to shut down that cognitive dissonance and he took it. Everything is now cool and life is good for everyone, end of history and all that, put a flag on it So a lot of people are doing nice for themselves, and other people like the idea that the world is like this even if it's just aspirational for them. The Olympics is a good example - you have your pride at the old working class history (some of it was not but still), big ups to the NHS, a Eurovision-level video about "modern Britain" (haha the Queen and James Bond black taxis and a man with a union jack on his face!) followed by some pop music from the 80s. Like the whole thing was less "hey world, this is the UK" and more "here's some warm comforting nostalgia, everything is good" (not saying it was all meant that way, but you didn't see many of these people going HEY YEAH THE NHS HAS BEEN hosed OVER). The fireworks thing at new year's seems to be same too - go to the wheel, here's some old songs, here's Bonkers again for that fresh modern vibe, it's like we're on a cultural loop So yeah, when you get criticism of all this stuff, when there's chat about how Blair actually hosed things up and New Labour was part of the problem, you're really hitting a lot of people in that warm comfortable place. Ordinary people don't want to feel wrong or like they missed something bad, and people with money and success don't like to have their "working class solidarity" balloon popped, which is where you get the meltiest melts

On the one hand the policy would be near impossible to enforce. On the other if it were enforceable or would be incredibly cruel to people who've made their lives in the UK , it's completely insane, and would gently caress the entire country. And to top it all it would be massively unpopular if actually carried through because even the reddest of gammons wants to go on holiday to France on occasion and likes having food in the supermarkets and someone paid minimum wage to wipe their senile mum's arse. Essentially the perfect Tory policy, it'll be made law in Parliament's first sitting after the break probably.

So, I totally agree that Corbyn should have the first go at forming a government of national unity with the sole remit of extending the A50 deadline and calling a GE. But am I the only one who thinks it’s so clearly the only good idea to take us off the collision course with No Deal that I don’t care if another caretaker PM does it instead? Harriet Herman really doesn’t strike me as a bad option to literally do two things in a time-limited window if that’s what it takes. Corbyn remains leader of the party and leads the GE campaigning, so I really don’t know what is lost if he can’t execute on his plan but someone else can.
