I was thinking of recommending Alcest to my dad, who likes progressive/experimental metal but doesn't like harsh vocals.

That varies with Alcest. Souvenirs and Shelter are the only albums where he doesn't do any harsh, and those records are pretty far from metal (especially Shelter, which one poster rather accurately described as Pure Moods 2014). There aren't many on Voyages (just 2 songs I think), but Kodama and Ecailles de Lune have quite a bit of screams.

Gorgasm is a great addition; one of the best bdm bands.

Now that I've thought about more brutal and/or slamming bands

Decrepit Birth: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQtWbVb-CGc a little more techy now (and still very good), but they started as a very straightforward bdm band.
Afterbirth: another old school NY band that only recently put out their debut: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J-sQMg2kBXk
Cerebral Effusion: one of the best, especially their last album: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mlxR3LU-lm0
Pyaimea: there was a lot of good Disgorge(us) worship a while back: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-1KjiYCzC5o
Syphilic: one man band and quite good at what he does. Not everyone's cup of tea, but I enjoy it a lot (and did guest vocals on a song a few years ago). This isn't the song, but it's off his newest (and best) album, which has some super NSFW art: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1LpobkBhfEA

Get you some Immolation (owns owns owns) and Memoriam (cos its basically BOLT THROWER). I'll second the recommendation of Undergang, because, well, who wouldn't.

quote:

They've come to bring us gift
They've come to make us whole
They've come to give us God
Their gift of Heaven
They've come to make us civil
Their gifts as ransom
Their God comes with a cost
We must give up all

For prayers in a foreign tongue
To a foreign throne
Erase our traditions
Erase our way of being
Erase our elder's teachings
Erase, replace these ways
Generations of wisdom
In exchange for ransom
Your God comes with a cost
A cost to us all

Prayers in a foreign tongue to
A God unknown
From demons, you will never see
Prayers that will save your soul
Blessed are the children
We have come to save them all
We came to cure disease that
Has never made you ill
We came to make you clean
To protect you from yourself

They've come to bring us hope
They've come to save our souls
They've come to make us holy
They've come to give us Heaven
They've come to make us civil
Just like them

Their God comes with a cost
And we must give up
All of our traditions
Erase our way of being
Erase our elder's teachings
Erase, replace these ways
Generations of wisdom
They have taken away
Our culture has been erased

Bring every child they blessed
With the needle's mark
Chop off every little arm
Let the children bleed

Metal lyrics don't have to be goofy and stupid.

Their whole discog is great imo, but Devour the Weak and Unleash the Carnivore feel a little same-y, which is really good if you like it. I loved Conceived in Sewage, but all my friends seem to hate it compared to the early stuff.
If you dig Devourment, have some other bands to try!

In no particular order and with my favorite album from each:

Disgorge: amazing blasty brutal death: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mCC3-tyYlU4
Cephalotripsy: super cave man-y (with VERY NSFW album art): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HZsjGZzebq8 (NSFW)
Epicardiectomy: "Zombie circle peet, show me show me" aside, they are a very good band and their most recent is one of my all-time favorite slam albums: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_b6wwWFodA
Defeated Sanity: not very slammy, but very brutal and technical: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HRPdFIyDjP4
Guttural Secrete: more very NSFW album art from a very skilled band: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tm8fV7WyAeU
Gorevent: come on and slam, and welcome to Japan: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=duZ6gkhiZgw (also NSFW, just go ahead and assume it's all NSFW art honestly)
Kraanium: can be a little derivative (the whole dang genre is at times), but I love their newest one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=44RCsp68vr8
Internal Bleeding: slam grandpappies: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ABQac18x1Y
Extermination Dismemberment: for when you're ready for an 808 bass drop: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bXHbPyYxuoE

Those are some of my favorites/best imo. I'm probably missing some, but I hope you dig at least one of these!

It's been a while since I checked this thread so I wanted to say thanks for all this!

I just saw 4 crust bands of various degrees of blackenedness in a tiny venue that was like 35°C hot. A feast for all the senses. Since the thread recently went over the topic again, here's some bandcamp links and short reviews.

Serpent Eater: Local guys, honestly not all that good. Nary a d-beat, and the blast beats were at that odd mid-tempo where you don't know if they're going for early Bolt Thrower or they just can't play any faster.
Alteri: Local guys, pretty good. Had both d- and blast beats and they knew that you gotta go fast! Probably had the least amount of atmospheric post black metal noodling of any of the bands.
Myteri: Swedish guys, pretty good. For fans of: Skitsystem and/or Martyrdöd and so on and so forth
Dödsrit: Swedish/Dutch guys, pretty good, but the worst offenders with the noodling. Plus some of the guitar harmonies approached the point where I get racist against Swedes (just join a loving Thin Lizzy cover band for FUCKS SAKE). They seemed genuinely stoked to be there, though, so whatever.

Overall pretty fun, but I got some guy's beer/spit in my eye so :rip: just :rip:

I had a BBQ a few weeks ago and a friend brought his daughter who is 8. I was playing various "lighter" stuff like that Kömmand album linked earlier, and of course BOLT THROWER. She told her dad she was too shy to tell me that she thought the songs were good and she liked them. Turns out before then she has discovered Raining Blood via asking the amazon echo at home to play some song, and was hooked.

Still hope for the future generations, yet.
