Yeah, good luck with that. God gave us burnable skin so that we would need to scurry about in the dark but here we are, talking loud and slow at spaniards in ibiza every year.

What do you think you can do that god can't?

as far as cyber guns go i dont think it's a solution until were in the distant post energy revolution future where everything is now a railgun or directed energy weapon. those would be complex enough that if the safety lock was like, built into the control chip there'd be no easy way to work around it. a fancy biometric lock on a regular firearm could just be taken off. firearms are completely mechanical, there's no way to make it work that same way. its like how alarms and locks on old pre-engine control unit cars are insanely easy to disable, but its very hard to hotwire (well designed) modern cars because theres multiple computers going 'is this an authorized engine start?'

There's almost no daylight between mandating biometric safties on all guns and banning guns outright, so why not go all the way? Mandated biometric safties would necessarily mean confiscating every single gun in the country and either holding them somewhere or destroying them, since from both an engineering and logistical standpoint it would be completely unfeasible to retrofit every gun. So it would be seen correctly as an attempt to confiscate all guns, and it would be just as politically unfeasible. So why not just go all the way at that point?

It's just a dumb idea. It both goes too far and doesn't go far enough. It would have very little payoff for a massive effort.

if there's a steady supply of legal, basically working guns are use restricted somehow, there's an argument to be made that it'd likely make it harder to get an illegal gun by choking.out the market

still, yeah it doesn't seem like a very good solution

I went and grabbed a surge protector off the shelf when I was at Home Depot yesterday. I figure, hey, APC, good enough for me.

I almost got to the checkout line before I noticed the loving thing had Alexa support built into it. :argh:

I was curious about this and here's the thing: It actually doesn't listen. It's just lying about it for some reason which is detailed in the bunches of one star reviews. The box is also lying according to the reviews in that it's not compatible with Alexa either (one review mentions that their box said "Compatible with Google Home &" and they also got rid of their support for Wink hubs (which I think have been completely abandoned anyway so no surprise there).

In addition to it not actually having a microphone and not being compatible with what it says it is, it also apparently works by connecting to your phone via Bluetooth but keeps its scheduling features on the plug itself and will lose them if removed from the power source. As far as I can tell it's lying about almost everything it claims it can do.

Sorry for the gun chat, I don't actually know much about them but it seems weird that old 1960 firearms are nearly as good as new ones, whereas computer tech now is millions of times superior to 1960s/70s models. Hopefully not though since it would lead to worse shootings!

Treating the lower receiver as the critical component of the gun has always been stupid.

The hardest components to make in a small shop is the barrel. Logically, it should be the controlled component.

Factory worker crushed to death by robot at Volkswagen plant

A factory worker has reportedly been killed by a robot in a freak accident at a Volkswagen plant.

The 21-year-old man was struck in the chest before being crushed against a metal plate while working at the factory in Germany.

He was said to have been resuscitated at the scene but died in hospital later.

I bet it just happened to be a robot at the hospital that finished him off!

China Builds City's First All-Robot Factory Replacing Human Workers

As part of a major push towards automation, the first robots-only factory is being built in China's Dongguan manufacturing hub, reducing human employees to a bare minimum.

The factory, owned by Shenzhen Evenwin Precision Technology Co., hopes to reduce its workforce by 90%, to only 200 human workers, with the introduction of a 1,000-robot workforce to take the human's places, according to the company's chairman, Chen Xingqi, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

It's more that in the past people thought we'd have robots do all our work for us and people could finally chill.

In truth robots do 80% of the work, people are starving to death for lack of work and the ones still working are still working themselves to death to make number go up by some fraction of a %.
