That's the Achille's Heel of this entire scam. There is no loving way, needing goodwill like they do, and needing money like they do, and increased confidence in the product, that CIG would hide anything that would prove significant advancement. To show real, quantifiable progress, like a working flight model, fun dogfighting, functioning physics, anything really, wouldn't just bolster confidence but also suck back in some of the more recenty disillusioned. In short, it would be a financial windfall they'd never, ever pass up. To me, that's the strongest evidence we have that CIG has nothing. So we get more JPEGs, more imagination, more what-ifs, and more dreams.

Yeah the “secret dev build” is just the feverish last hope of the cultists. As you said, as desperate for money and good press as they are, they’re not going to hold anything back. Also, aside from Lando going “there are some things we can’t show you. *wink tehehe” once in a while there is absolutely no evidence for it. CIG doesn’t even make scripted demos anymore since sandworm-gate. Plus, it torpedos the whole “most open game development ever” nonsense.

It’s funny that CIG has actual become much more honest over the past year or two, especially since the Calder investment. All they show anymore is exactly what they have, more art assets and vague promises. The cultists just want to believe that all of the crazy promises from the heady and expansionary early days of CIG are still being secretly worked on, even when CIG itself is constantly walking them back and implying that none of it will ever be in the game.

There's something else about bears not many people know. If a bear gets hooked on the taste of crowdfunding, it becomes a man-killer. He'll go on a rampage and has to be destroyed. And that's why you should never hug a bear.

In 2023, John Carreyrou's book about Star Citizen comes out. On page 202:

Q: As the project started to decline, were you goons really plugged in to what was happening? Some say you were out of touch by that point.

A: Dude. They did a concierge (author's note: these were backers who ultimately lost more than $1,000 on the project) event in Cologne, and we had a loving image of their menu in like two days!

That's mostly true, but there is this: there is a "secret dev build," out in plain sight. It's Squadron 42. It is completely secret, because of course Chris' brilliant plot strokes must not be exposed before their time. It is not dependent on having a bunch of college kids concoct an MMO from CryEngine. It is the hope and salvation of this entire multiyear enterprise.

A day or so ago, I posted something suggesting that the lulz might be ending, with the scent of failure in the wind. I was wrong. Squadron 42 is coming, and the whole crowd, from the largest whale to the smallest that Kazan, are utterly unprepared for it to suck so badly that Crobberts entire aura will lose its luster. That will be a moment to treasure.

Or a moment to eat crow, if Squadron 42 does not suck. If that happens, I will apologize to all of the above here.

So CIG charged $275 for a meal that I could get at my local German restaurant in the middle of the Rocky Mountains, for 30 bucks; and I actually could sit at my own table instead of being packed in like cattle. Then the Crobbler and company sat them down for a hard sell pitch for a $675 JPEG, and ran off with a six figure haul like thieves into the night.

The poor dumb scammed bastards then tweeted and posted all over the place with pictures chronicling their shame, convinced that they are truly privileged and that their new life in space is just around the corner.

What a magical evening.
