So I’m pleased so say that while I successfully got a job recently (and had finished my second week there as of Friday), I was also successful at getting the job I really wanted, so I’ll be leaving the one I have now shortly.

If people are interested, I have some statistics about my recent search and it would be interesting to compare them to other people’s experiences.

So basically from the day I was notified I was at risk of redundancy to accepting the first job offer I got was a period of 28 days.

Over that 28 day period I submitted 213 applications - the last week I sent out very few as I was moving home, and once I received and accepted the first offer I ceased applying completely.

14 jobs out of those 213 applications got a recruiter or employer in contact regarding them.

9 of those 14 jobs reached the interview stage. Most but not all were a two stage process.

3 of those 9 jobs resulted in an offer. I accepted one, then later got a much better one, and declined the last.

So basically:

1 out of 15 applications led to positive contact.

1 out of 24 applications led to the interview stage.

1 out of 71 applications led to a job offer.

Or alternatively:

6.6% of applications led to positive contact.

64.28% of contacted applications led to an interview.

33.33% of interviews led to a job offer.

Locations covered North Kent, South Essex and East London. Salary for outside London was £25,000+ increasing substantially further into London. This was for office based roles in the fields of logistics, distribution and manufacturing.

As it happens, not one application in London went anywhere.
Congrats on finding something, especially something you want to do! That's a horrific and impressive amount of work put into finding work. From the salary and your role description I guess that the position you wanted is one that is somewhat specialised and where you also have previous experience. Did you only apply for jobs that matched that, or did you apply in areas that you wouldn't want to pursue long-term but would have been bearable as interim work? Comparatively how successful were those applications? Did you tailor applications to each job, or to broader employment areas?

I also recently finished a frustrating period of job hunting, where your success rate definitely sounds pretty familiar applying for "good" jobs. I had somewhat better success with zero-hours, short contract stuff and ended up working those while hunting for something long-term. I made a lot fewer applications than you, and over a longer period, because I at least had those crappy jobs just about paying the bills. But at the same time I definitely built up the job I ended up being offered a lot in my mind over the several-month-long application process. I know if I hadn't at least had the hope of success there to look forward to I would have felt a lot shittier about my future during that time.

I applied for about 20 jobs over a month in May (because I was lazy, and wasn't in a rush since I was living with my in laws and we had savings), got 3 or 4 interview offers and 2 job offers.

e I tailored each application to the job, looked basically everywhere north of Sheffield but mostly Yorkshire / Newcastle and in every job I thought I wouldn't hate. I was also very lucky to be offered the only one I really wanted.

Well you guys are making me optimistic about my current job search in Ottawa.

I've applied for three jobs so far:

Water Slide designer
Biogas digester designer
Kitchen manufcaturing designer/project co-ordinator.

I figured that designing water slides would be cool, with the next best thing being designing tanks for pressurised poo poo and mouldy vegetable matter, and then designing kitchens as a last resort.

Haven't heard anything back yet, mind.

My big concern is that he'll go for an early election under FTPA (which, of course, requires 2/3rds of the Commons to pass) as his first order of business when Parliament returns - the election would take place after October 31st with no possibility of extending which leaves Labour in the rather invidious position of saying "No we don't want a General Election" which would be all those nice sensible centrists would need to shout about how JEREMY SAID HE WANTED AN ELECTION AND NOW HE IS CHICKENING OUT, despite the very obvious flaws there (and lets face it if the political press in this country called out obvious flaws in centrist reasoning they'd never have a chance to report on anything else - which may not be too bad a thing)

I have moved to London 2 months ago and I'm having the best and the worst time of my life at the same time.

Job hunting turned into an endurance race against frustration (which was expected as the first month and a half went by while looking for a cupboard to live in, being straight up bedridden from the change of weather and probably the bacteria cocktail that is the Northern Line and setting up practical stuff like bank accounts etc.).

On top of trying to convince the employers I'm here legally, I have to bullshit my way around the fact that my work permit only allows me to be a contractor (probably a better thing in the long run) when applying to Permanent jobs as well.

I don't know if this is the proper place to ask but does anyone know a good recruitment agency specializing in construction (transportation/engineering) industry? (other than the big faceless ones like Randstad, Micheal Page etc.)

Well, at least I didn't get trampled during the Carnival and only spent 3 hours stranded there under the heatwave while trying to find a proper exit :unsmith:

Bad for the country if we No Deal two weeks before an election, but probably good for Labour's chances of winning an election, and if no MPs are willing to actually help Labour stop No Deal then that's as good as we're going to get.
