I still can't decide if Soul Music has my favourite Pratchett joke (the night club one) or whether it's the completely stealth jokes in the names of the Notafrican countries in Pyramids that I didn't get until I learned what a Hershey Bar was twenty years later. And Night Watch is still the best. GNU. E: 244 is roughly half the number of words per day Terry Pratchett aimed to write. It doesn't take much, just consistency.

And just in case anyone’s still unsure, the sharks and the jets were the two gangs in West Side Story, which is based on Romeo and Juliet, which is the thing the Selachiis and Venturis are immediately recogniseable as references to, so it’s the most circuitous pune (or play on words) you’ll ever see.

A venturi is a fluid jet in general, (or the effect that one produces), Pratchett would have probably been more familiar with it from working for the CEGB than from jet engines. It's a pro-tier cryptic crossword level play on words though. We could have had this Instead we're going to have this And this RBA-Wintrow posted:People are going to end up travelling to the mainland to buy medicine in france/belgium/holland because the UK's run out and their package from the internet is stuck somewhere in Customs. You could probably play a game of Blood Bowl and name one team the jets and one the sharks. In fact I think you can do that in an NFL EA game. I think there is a team called the sharks and one called the jets.

The desire for that is usually something I associate with either liberals or very serious anarchists, and I only take one of those groups seriously. The one and only thing that Parliament has actually agreed on is that we shouldn't no-deal. Boris is trying to do it anyway, against the express will of Parliament.

I read Soul Music as a kid because I thought the cover looked cool. Absolutely every single music reference passed me by, even the name 'music with rocks in', and it was the most confusing thing I'd ever tried to read in my young life. It was years before I tried reading Discworld again, but by then I was old enough to actually enjoy it.

https://twitter.com/OFOCBrexit/status/1167206484880613376 This is pretty big - not the Ken Clarke endorsement, but OFOC (funded by Mandelson and his, ahem, "contacts") begrudgingly admitting that Corbyn needs to be PM. I'd noticed they'd been retweeting Owen Jones (and vice versa) earlier this week and wondered what was going on, seems like even they have a breaking point for Tory bullshit compared to the "risk" of a socialist in government.
