I think it’s foolish to even say automation is a “problem”. Automation is, itself, unambiguously awesome*. I don’t want to lug water in buckets from a town well. The problem is, who gets the money that is generated by this automation? If output is distributed fairly instead of just going to whatever rear end in a top hat was able to buy the machines, everybody wins. Under our current economic order, we know where the money would go. Something like UBI will be necessary to fix that. Obviously Yang’s plan is trash. Bernie’s job guarantee is probably a good place to start a transition. * Possible caveat for Lazy Wall-E Space Fatties.

Automation is undeniably a source of problems. Saying it's not a problem is like saying worldwide industrialization is not a problem, or capitalism is not a problem. There are unambiguous negative consequences that need to be mitigaged, ameliorated, or managed or it can and will end very very poorly for everyone who isn't already on top.

Eh, I feel like automation is just a symptom of the real problem: late stage capitalism.

GlyphGryph posted:Automation is undeniably a source of problems. But I see a lot of sentiment that suggests that we need to "stop" automation, or that automation is an enemy, as if automation itself were a malevolent force instead of something that could greatly benefit a reasonably functional civilization (a standard that, yes, currently, we're not meeting). Or, what Luckyellow said. And Nonsense, NMS that poo poo, jeez.

Automation is a problem when the decisions of how to use automation are made by a small group of people whose primary concern is profit (you know, capitalists). They're going to fire people because that's how you realize the profits of automation. This isn't a new problem and I haven't seen anything to suggest it's advancing particularly fast either. A jobs guarantee is a fine step in the right direction because people won't be reliant on private business but it's still a major disruption to your life to lose your job, even if you've got another one waiting. I'd like to see Bernie have a plan to push for worker co-ops, he called his plan workplace democracy but it fell well short of the goal for me. The problem isn't just automation or having your job relocated, it's that all of the decisions of labor are made for you.

We've been making our way along the Great Lakes for a while now. We're in the Hamptons, now. In South Bend, Indiana, most everyone is a Bernie supporter. In Toledo, Ohio, a friend of my host was a Pete supporter, who had canvassed for Pete at the Pride Parade the week before. In Detroit, there were a few fascist white supremacists (like, q-anon conspiracy theory moral panic types) within the hippie community, at least one outspoken Green Party advocate, and a lot of nonsense about aliens and magic while employing non-stop thought-stopping. In Amenia, New York, and in Easthampton, I'm running into Marianne Williamson fans. Also, a little more of the q-anon bullshit. In Amenia, I suspect actual deliberate targeting by intelligence agencies (unsure which or how many); I know that sounds absurd, but the land there is directly tied to OWS, and sits at the end of the Harlem Line, a straight-shot commuter rail coming out of Grand Central. This qanon cult is exceptionally insipid. Don't imagine it's just old fat white hicks that have been brainwashed to support trump 'no matter what'; there's a whole spectrum of engineered belief systems that converge, having targeted a very diverse set of populations. I've met old beared hippies that think they're saving the world from child sex trafficking by voting for Trump, discouraging their hippie friends from voting at all, and ignoring the child concentration camps on the border as 'fake news.' I've seen a KEK pin on a deadhead vendor's pinboard in Maine. I know OWS 9/11-was-an-inside-job drum circlers that think they're one of the few to have pieced together the truth about the occult plot that /really/ runs things, holding to pizza gate and convinced that Hillary killed Seth Rich. The commonalities of all of these branches are, they're all convinced that Hillary is responsible for untold evil. And most have a favorable view of Putin. It's all been engineered, using sockpuppets and the cambridge analytica data and fake news. It's a big part of the fascist machine. This is what we're up against, in wresting control of the US Federal Gov't from Trump and the GOP.

Pretty much. The Robots Are Coming, and Sweden Is Fine If you have powerful unions, governmental support, a system aligning private with collective profit and a good social safety net, automation is actually seen as a boon rather than a curse.
