Yeah I picked up a pack in bbq sauce to try a while back, it was basically the taste & texture of pulled pork. Was nice.

Borrovan posted:

A lot of people itt like to dick on our unwritten constitution, but governing by convention is actually a great way of doing things - our constitution is quite possibly the most stable in world history, having survived in recognisable form for close to 1000 years. The advantage is its flexibility: when everyone's basically in agreement that something that's arguably "unconstitutional" is nonetheless the right thing to do, you can just revisit it and claim that it was actually something different all along; when something's a bit iffy, it forces a lot more scrutiny and makes it a lot harder to actually do it without repercussions (but without strictly preventing anything, in case something iffy is also necessary to preserve the safety and order of the state).

The fact that our constitution is failing now is down to one person:

Jeremy Corbyn. Unironically.

It's been clear for the past 2 years that the Government doesn't actually have the authority to govern - any other time in history they'd be VONCed without a second thought. But no, the establishment would much rather burn down a thousand year old constitution than even risk letting a spooky scary socialist anywhere near power. I guess that's just the flipside of having a "stable" constitution: that it's inherently reactionary, developing slowly and incrementally (by contrast to written constitutions, which - being inflexible - are prone to "break" instead). Which is actually kind of ironic, given that the whole advantage is flexibility.

No conclusions here, just a little rant I was mulling. TIBFJC, I guess.

Being even more useless than the Tories is quite an achievement.

My dad insisted that's how we should answer the phone too, except just the last four digits (because London area codes used to take up a lot more of the digits). I think it dates to the beginning of trunk dialing, presumably the idea was that - without an operator - it was the most anonymous way of confirming to the caller whether or not they'd called the right number.

Big batches can help a lot with cooking feeling more rewarding. I made a giant loving pile of welsh cakes following my first attempt at the recipe and have eaten like half a kilo of flour and a whole pack of butter in the past few days cos I've been having them for breakfast and supper :v: It's not more effort to make the same recipe with bigger portions but you get to eat it a lot more.
Yeah, a mainstay of my diet has become Jamaican beef patty stuffing after someone mentioned them in a previous iteration of the thread. The patties themselves could get a bit repetitive, if you had them like all the time, but the stuffing itself can be used a bit more flexibly - the juice can be used to make a savory rice porridge when you actually make a batch, and the stuffing can serve as a fine base for sauces for any kind of pasta really.

I mean, I definitely also did the "half a kilo of flour and a whole pack of butter" thing when I first started making them, but it's not really long-term viable I think - the amount of effort required skyrockets when you have to actually make the dough and stuff the patties.

I doubt that's the reason, because we all had little books of area codes so we could look them up easily. I'd guess it dates from the days you asked an operator to put you through anyway, but lasted a while because most people you rang in those days wouldn't need to dial the area codes and it was just easier to say the placename.

Chipotles in adobo are an awesome chili ingredient. They add some spicy heat obviously, but nothing crazy so it's really easy to work them into a chili recipe regardless of how hot you want the finished product to be.
