I met my first Fabian Society member yesterday and well, that was an unpleasant experience. Is that unusual or are they generally tied up in knots by their own contradictions?

In this case it started as "Labour should commit to campaigning against the deal they have yet to broker" and then things got really weird

e: Section 190 of the UK Housing Act relates to the duty of a local authority to an "intentionally homeless" person who is applying for assistance with housing

Sorry can we just go back to the Humble Address Request:

quote:

that Ministers be further directed to lay before this House no later than 11.00pm Wednesday 11 September all the documents prepared within Her Majesty's Government since 23 July 2019 relating to operation Yellowhammer and submitted to the Cabinet or a Cabinet Committee

To which the response was a single 5 page summary document? Where's the actual planning? Was there more released to MPs/Privy Councillers designated Secret/TS?

Gove straight-up said they're not gonna release the correspondence, which I guess would put them in contempt of Parliament, which may or may not be prorogued right now so

Anyone know what the legal effect of humble addresses is?

e: wait I'm confusing that with the prorogation stuff. point & question still stand tho

I went to a few fabian events way back. They seemed pretty decent back then (2013 ish?). Went to a pub quiz and some event with South American socialists where we all sang the red flag. Was fun.

EDIT: back in 2013 I definitely was a liberal who enjoyed cosplaying as a socialist. I've been radicalised since then.

Hey, if anyone else is wanting in on the podcast, make sure you're on the discord.
I don't know how many people we've got lined up for next week, the Lib Dem conference/ what we think of the EU special, but we have further episodes after that too.

Especially if you are not a straight white dude! It would be great to have female/BAME/LGBTQ+/disabled voices on there so please feel welcome to take part! And if there's anything we can do to make being part of the podcast easier for you just let us know :)

The Fabian Society was a relatively radical socialist society upon its founding, but around the Blair era got entryismed by tories to gently caress it up. Young Fabians are 50-50 good people and a cunts, Adult Fabians is where Francey Tweetman hangs out for head pats and ideas for terrible tweets.

While that's probably the case aren't Young Sam and Young Sybil in their mid teens?

TV doing their usual "20-something year olds playing teenagers and 30 year olds playing their parents" I guess.

Edit: Wait ignore that I thought this was Night Watch rather than The Watch.

Also please get involved with the podcast if you can, I've been trying to sort my audio for weeks so I can actually record something and everyone is very kind and patient so don't let nerves or lack of tech knowledge stop you!

That director of our company that I've spoken about before has just interrupted a converstion on Yellowhammer and accused me of "project fear". He says he's not seen anything about Brexit that he thinks will cause any problems and it's time to "just get on with it" so if anyone was worried about millionaires who hold a Canadian passport you can relax, they'll be fine.

Hello, dear
I often wonder if the queen actually talks about anything or if she's just not a mad old bag who tortures PMs a bit for her own amusement when she is left alone with them. I could see her forcing bojo to take off his shirt so she can jump on his fat stomach in her bare feet or something like that.

She slaps each and every prime minister right in the face. She gets away with it because no PM would ever mention being slapped by the Queen, and so no PM is ever prepared for the slap.

"I haven't seen anything to be worried about."

"What about this leaked government report, and this NHS prediction, and all of these businesses that have already left the UK?"

"Project fear. I haven't seen anything to be worried about."

In other words he hasn't seen anything because every time he does see anything, he discounts it as project fear. It's a very elegant set of blinkers.

If you want to get into it, call out his circular reasoning and the fact that we can't stockpile insulin, no international trade deal has ever been completed in under 5 months and any insulin coming from the US would (A) be out of date by the time it was shipped here and (B) bankrupt us because of US healthcare prices. Type A diabetics (for whom the condition is genetic, so no stereotypes blaming weight here) are going to loving die because of this.

But also be aware that he is not only your boss but a millionaire, and AMAB, even the Canadian ones.

Also, if joining UCU, hit them up for a ballot paper like immediately because they sent them out last week and VOTE YES ON STRIKE ACTION AND ACTION SHORT OF A STRIKE. There's also a half hour stoppage on the 20th for the climate strikes, so hit up your branch secretary about that.

Thanks. I guess I'll go for UCU. I'm in an IT department at a university.

All three seem to have advantages:
UCU: more focused
Unite: more left wing (?)
Unison: the guy who sits behind me is the Unison rep, and it would be cool to have a close contact and maybe get involved

I'm too scared to go on strike on the 20th because I'm so new, but I booked it as a vacation day so I can join the march lol
