Yes, they use the force sensors only. Maybe they look for changes or variation in force too but in any case a chunk of weight is all it takes.

Other manufacturers are much much more stringent, because they are designing their cars with this in mind:

Dubar posted:

the point being that people are awful and no matter what safety features you put in, the first thing people will do is try to circumvent them. Self driving cars need to not only drive safely, but also actively prevent the person using them from sabotaging the safety mechanisms

The big manufacturers know just how aggressively dumb drivers are and they work very hard to keep them from being stupid and deflect liability. They almost take the same approach that software devs do with users: assume they will do the dumbest thing possible then figure out something dumber and expect that. (unless it costs the makers 10¢ per part more in which case all bets are off)

Where self driving cars have trouble is in poor visibility conditions, which is when people are generally paying more attention while driving anyways.

I'm thinking about the problem of choosing a safe speed in really bad visibility: slow enough not to out drive your visibility, or fast enough that someone coming up behind you doesn't rear end you. A network of even semi-autonomous cars can come to a consensus and avoid those massive, multi-car pileups that kill a bunch of people every winter.

human drivers are pretty ok when they're paying attention. most accidents happen because of distracted, intoxicated, or inexperienced drivers

unfortunately, the first generation of self driving cars will be attractive to these three categories, while also still relying on them to take over in emergency situations - likely not being a net benefit for road safety, since the ideal use case for first generation autonomous cars will overlap with the category of drivers who are least likely to get in injurious accidents

That was the plan a decade ago but it turns out suddenly handing an emergency situation over to an inattentive driver is even worse than letting a computer program just do whatever when it hits uncharted territory.

the problem with this approach is that then the manufacturer has to assume all liability for any accidents that happen rather than playing hot potato with the driver for who is responsible in the seconds leading up to a crash

To be fair, Trump's almost certainly bullshitting and telling Rubio and the other hawks what they want to hear. But it's still pretty funny/disturbing.

Billions of cars all eternally going about their errands long after their owners are dead. Blindly following their routine long after the roads crumble and their grills are caked with blood and hair because they no longer stop or even slow down for pedestrians, animals, or anything not programmed into them a decade ago.

Yea there's not an American alive that actually gives a poo poo about the national debt. The people that claim to only want to use it as a reason to cut entitlements and funnel more wealth upwards. It's loving amazing that the evidence is so recent in the last tax bill yet people still talk about the national debt like it's a legit topic of concern for literally anyone.

Thanks for your apology, but even the language here is a problem. If you said "married to one" about any other group of people, this thread would be outraged. A close family friend was murdered by a person with schizophrenia who was experiencing an episode of psychosis and that doesn't give me license to speak about all people with schizophrenia as other or use stigmatizing language.

It's also not just you. People have been doing this throughout this thread.

Okay I grok you now. Fair enough, and noted for next time.

Edit: I'll add that I probably shouldn't speak at all about this topic because I have a lot of trauma connected to it and can't be as careful/rational with wording as I'd usually want to be. So with that I will tardily shut up.
