KillHour posted:Do Teslas really just rely on pressure sensors? My Kia makes me actually turn the wheel a little bit every once in a while. Yes, they use the force sensors only. Maybe they look for changes or variation in force too but in any case a chunk of weight is all it takes. Other manufacturers are much much more stringent, because they are designing their cars with this in mind: Dubar posted:the point being that people are awful and no matter what safety features you put in, the first thing people will do is try to circumvent them. Self driving cars need to not only drive safely, but also actively prevent the person using them from sabotaging the safety mechanisms The big manufacturers know just how aggressively dumb drivers are and they work very hard to keep them from being stupid and deflect liability. They almost take the same approach that software devs do with users: assume they will do the dumbest thing possible then figure out something dumber and expect that. (unless it costs the makers 10¢ per part more in which case all bets are off)

I'm thinking about the problem of choosing a safe speed in really bad visibility: slow enough not to out drive your visibility, or fast enough that someone coming up behind you doesn't rear end you. A network of even semi-autonomous cars can come to a consensus and avoid those massive, multi-car pileups that kill a bunch of people every winter.

I remember many years ago reading a YA in novel in which the protagonists go to an alternate dimension and find an abandoned city inhabited by packs of feral cars. They manage to tame/befriend one of them and it helps them fight off the other cars and accomplish their mission.

Yea there's not an American alive that actually gives a poo poo about the national debt. The people that claim to only want to use it as a reason to cut entitlements and funnel more wealth upwards. It's loving amazing that the evidence is so recent in the last tax bill yet people still talk about the national debt like it's a legit topic of concern for literally anyone.
