Again, it is ludicrous for one individual to have a billion dollars. For a single human that is an insane amount of money. But trying to compare individual wealth to national spending is pointless and absurd. They're just not on the same scale and they're not even the same type of information.

Tiggum posted:If they were all able to liquidate all their assets for their full value and we added them all together they're still well over a trillion dollars short of paying for the national budget for a single year. Also a lot of the typical billionaire's net worth isn't cash. It's in stocks and property. Even if you were to throw Jeff Bezos in prison and sell all of his stocks, houses, sports cars, private planes, etc. to put the money back into the government, you'd need people willing to pay the price they're worth to actually get the nominal value out of it (simply printing huge amounts of money to pay for stuff tends to have an....adverse effect). Estimates of his cash reserve have it at less than $20 million. Even if you were to lock up every billionaire and make them pay for every social service, you'd hit insurmountable hurdles trying to get the money out of it.

This is like when people point out how Elon Musk is worth X amounts of billions due to his Tesla stock. But If he tried to sell off all his Tesla stocks he wouldn't get a fraction of that for any number of reasons. Theranos had a theoretical net worth of what? 9 billion? without ever having sold anything. But who would have forked up that in cash to buy it? Netscape was at one point worth 3 billion and all they did was put out a free browser. And all of this in comparison to how much real money the US government spends on any given year. What's the net worth of the US government? All the money in the world times 10?

I mean, cash doesn't actually matter as much as, say, all their land and their property and their delicious, delicious other means of production. Imagine if Amazon became a goods distribution system for a socialist state, or even better for a communist society. Setting the rent for vast swaths of the US housing system to $0. We don't even really need to go after the millionaire landlords and below at that point, you can't beat free and actually maintained. Water, electricity, healthcare, weed, gigabit internet guaranteed as an irreducible minimum, libraries of tools, of recreational equipment, of fancy yachts, of whatever the gently caress you want. Actual dollars in a computer or written on cotton has always been a method of restricting goods and services to the rich, and hasn't equalled anything relating to overall goods or service capacity ever since some jerk invented lying. Everyone deserves a free (weekend or two on a) yacht.

In my experience USPS doesn’t pull the classic FedEx trick of slapping “sorry we missed you” tags on your door for three days and then making you go pick it up. I was home for all three “attempted” deliveries. They didn’t even knock.

Man seconding this. FedEx has lost a total of four of my packages, totalling about 1200$. I'd call them and they just gave me the run around. My apartment maintenance guy ended up finding one of the packages and said it was left in front of an abandoned apartment building. I don't even know. USPS on the other hand, has never given me an issue. They drop it off, knock on my door, and then just head out. Often they're earlier than I expect too.

Yeah, gently caress FedEx, I've had them pull the "sorry you weren't at home "-thing three times in a row, over two weeks, and every single time I had to call them up and fight with their phone support for a new delivery date where, mysteriously, the delivery person actually remembered to ring the doorbell.

That's because they're a privately owned company with a profit model which depends on internally metrics which are theoretically barely possible for their drivers to make while performing their obs possibly but in practice actually impossible to make, and they underpay drivers significantly and threaten them with discipline if they don't hit the impossible delivery metrics. The driver who just hucks the package and says "gently caress it" is probably doing it because the company's job description and policy forces him to upon threat of losing his job, but then when you get pissed off, the company blames the driver.
