Political cartooning is not exactly the most productive institution in the world. I'm pretty sure Azza has made more good political cartoons than the entirety of the UK professional industry.

I think mocking Jo Swinson's teeth when her voting record is right there is lazy, but I still think Boris Johnson looks like the antisemites in 16th century Prague made their own golem out of wax and activated it by drawing a knob on its forehead instead of a shem.

That's just a general impression rather than any specific feature though.

I generally trust the thread's conscience to go after people who present themselves weirdly and also have bad opinions, rather than making fun of people with disfigurements. Political discussion gets really loving dry if we aren't able to make fun of Charlie Kirk's weirdly small face, Sebastian Payne looking simultaneously 12 and 48, or even Theresa May's anal bead necklace.

As I understand it the process of getting UK citizenship (i.e. permanent residence, then actual citizenship) is easiest, and cheapest, for EU citizens. Wouldn't be surprised if some EU treaty somewhere said "permanent residence (or equivalent) is allowed to cost a maximum of £70", which I think is the actual price for EU folks. Meanwhile a bunch of non-EU people in this thread have spoken of thousands of pounds for the same...

Yeah, an American friend of mine (married to a Brit and with 2 kids) was going through the process, one step behind the Tories, so that every time they got to a stage (leave to remain but we hate you, slightly firmer leave to remain....), the price had recently shot up. I think they were talking about 5 grand at one point.

At the same time, I was paying the grand sum of 0 Euros for citizenship of an EU country that actually wants more citizens, and doesn't guard it like some kind of demented dragon. Didn't feel great :(

When my wife eventually gets actual citizenship (so FLR(M) twice then ILR then actual citizenship) it will have cost us 10k at least all told, and that's without kids. Foreign spouse or a house, pick one.

That's obscene. Sorry dude.

I just don't understand even what the veneer logic is supposed to be. UK citizenship is a massive prize only for the most deserving (i.e. richest) I guess. Plus an easy income flow from people with absolutely no political clout.

A cynical take on my other country's liberalisation of citizenship law would be that they fear being replaced (although slightly less absurdly than the UK, since 1/3 of the population is non-citizens, and mostly white European) - but even then, the solution is: learn the language, no fees, a short residency period and you can be one too. Oh and here's a massive list of other routes to citizenship too.

I think there's a tension between the way we function as people (socialised, though possibly innately to a degree) where dislike of a person and their ideas and other things about them aren't hard separated, and the problems that occur when that lack of separation affects people that there's no moral justification for targeting.

I'm not sure you can have an ideal political motivation that is very effective but also doesn't engage in spiteful ridicule, because we've a lot of reasons to feel spiteful and it's frankly a big emotional investment to dive right into the meat of the reasons why. Superficial mockery fills the need to not drown your mind in the misery of our situation.

But all that said it's still entirely true that doing it hurts people you shouldn't want to hurt. I don't have a simple suggestion but the complaints about people engaging in it aren't wrong in their criticisms. Rarity's right, basically.

The permanent residence is literally entirely based in EU law, yes.

But there's nothing preventing the UK from adopting the same procedure for people from outside the EU, rather than having he most expensive one around.

In fact the UK has fought mightily to prevent the permanent residence from applying for partners of UK citizens (it does for EU citizens) as well.

That's literally what Cameron's poxy "renegotiation" was about.

Only if you want the citizenship, permanent residence has only administrative costs and there's a time limit for how long it can take to process as well, not to mention that the conditions are very generous compared to ILR.

There's no such thing as 'just between us mates' though when it comes to insults. If that was the case then we'd be ok with calling Sajid Javid a P**i or Ruth Davison the f-word or Chuka Umunna the n-word because, hey they're not part of the in-crowd so it's fine, right? You wouldn't accept that when it comes to race or sexuality so why are you cool with it when it's about looks?

Because they aren't equivalent. There is no historical oppression of ugly male politicians to give such insults a horrible context. If looking at parliament is any indicator ugly men actually are advantaged in becoming MPs.

Now otoh there definitely IS for women, so I do get why they can be considered a special case.

And also, if I call chuka the n word or throw around slur's you can assume that I'm basing part of my judgement on his race or orientation, which is political and an actual ideological evil. Its not the case if I call bojo an ugly tory wanker when a story surfaces about him being a tory wanker.

There's the matter of power differentials though; mocking the Queen's English is different to mocking a Jamaican patois or an Indian accent, even though they're 'all just accents', and even though some older African and Asian people cultivated RP accents in order to get ahead in the face of racism I don't think any would take mockery of RP as an attack on them unless it was prefaced with a racist remark.

In the same way, the people mocking Diane Abbott (and there are far too many) are doing so because they don't think people with those bodies should even be in Parliament, whereas (unfortunately) I don't think saying that Boris Johnson looks like a 5 year old made a model of white privilege out of Play-Doh is going to stop white Etonians running for office.
