None of my friends or family voted for Brexit either. My dead grandad probably would have though. I remember him telling me how scary it was when he went on holiday to Phoenix Arizona and there were some black people having a party in the room next door.

not really

they haven't had much forward progress lately, stalling out around 20%. at the lower end of labour polling, this is competitive (which is grim, of course), but i haven't seen a single poll since labour's remain pivot where the lib dems are above labour - which i would have if they were within 4 or so points, since the british make lots of polls

I'm not sure it will amount to much when people are faced with the reality of FPTP. In 2010, after the first prime ministerial TV debate (ever), they were riding high in the polls, but this didn't actually translate to seats.

It's still slightly worrying that people appear to be falling for the Lib Dem bullshit (again).

Also, the drugs and weapons that are smuggled in will generate a vast amount of wealth for the smugglers, who will work to solidify the traffic. There will also be fighting between rival cartels, and so lots of violence, facilitated by the aforementioned weapons.

Everyone thinks that a no deal will lead to no exchange of goods. It will continue, but it will just be illegal, because the legal channels for doing so will become too prohibitive in terms of cost, and the profit generated by smuggling will appeal to people who are suffering from the bad economy. It's the perfect recipe for the creation of a powerful mafia.

Still not thinking big enough. With trucks getting waved through, and the NHS being sold off piecemeal, there will be an actual market for things such as body parts, organs, blood. They would get around the short shelf life of these things by transporting them in living bodies. You just know some old rich gently caress would relish the idea of keeping a celler full of spare organs and blood and all he has to do is throw down a few bread rolls and buckets of water every few days. Also, migrants being sold into sexual slavery would likely become pretty common. Being able to get whatever you want into a country without any check and balances would get extremely hosed up very quickly.

This got me to thinking about other songs from the Troubles. I don't think the United States is heading for an insurrection like that, but the flood of weapons here and the militarized police forces give me that vibe. As if things have been simmering for a long time and soon everything will boil over. It's a pretty horrifying thought.

We've all been spoiled by living in a short frame of history where peaceful democratic politics have been the norm. The civil war in NI was a reminder that when democracy fails a society can quickly collapse.

The Northern Ireland civil war began almost overnight because a large part of the population were disenfranchised and felt they had no other option but violent resistance. Nobody in power saw it coming, because civilized democracies aren't supposed to collapse like that.
