MonsieurChoc posted:Also they should have feathers goddamit. The raptors in Jurassic Park 3 are an older generation from the ones in the previous movies and they've actually got a few feathers, which suggests that the lack of them is just one of the many features that Wu engineered to match the dinosaurs to people's expectations.

Also not all dinosaurs had feathers. Raptors and their close relations did, because they're the ancestors of birds. Big carnivores like spino and rex most likely didn't, and the whole range of herbivores almost certainly didn't either.

DeimosRising posted:I thought that was stated explicitly It's definitely explicit about Wu modifying the dinosaurs for marketability—them not being real dinosaurs—but I don't recall feathers being specifically mentioned (though it's been a bit since I've watched any of them). The original Jurassic Park movie was 1993, so it talks about dinosaurs being the ancestors of birds, but it came out before there was actual fossil evidence of feathered dinosaurs.

The dinosaur equivalent of racoons or pigeons are the only ones that are going to survive outside of a nature reserve. The next Jurassic World will have to be a faux documentary about state animal control officials having meetings on how to make tiny dinosaur-proof trash cans

Most of the bad reviews I've read for Jojo Rabbit are either against the very concept of the movie, which I don't care about at all, or actually read like positive reviews, so I'm looking forward to it even more now. The Lighthouse is absolutely going to rule though, gently caress I want to see that.

Saw Jojo Rabbit at TIFF (packed house) and judging by the frequency and volume of laughter, the audience loved it. I can see why critics are divided because their job is to be, well, critical and in that mode it's not hard to find ways to pick it apart on a conceptual level, but on a basic watchability level it is very, very funny. A humanist crowdpleaser black comedy if there ever was one. I think you have to go into it with the lens of how Nazism is being expressed in contemporary times rather than seeing it as making any sort of statement about the actual Holocaust, despite the WWII backdrop. There is some thematic dissonance there and not all of it works perfectly, but even the C+ review I saw on AV Club was like "ok I begrudgingly laughed at the jokes but if you took those away it would just be a typical Anne Frank narrative" which is a weird criticism to make about a comedy. You will probably have a good time if all you want to see is a Polynesian Jewish director taking gallons of piss out of the Third Reich and intolerance in general. Minus a couple stars if the concept of even slightly sympathetic Nazi characters is repulsive to you. Add three stars if the image of Sam Rockwell as a drunken, one-eyed, closeted Nazi youth camp counselor who hates his job sounds remotely appealing.

Being really smart hasn't really helped primates or say elephants thrive in the Holocene, but I guess pack hunting carnivores like wolves or dolphins would be closest to what raptors are in the movie and they do ok enough. So there can be a bit in the new movie with ranchers being mad about raptors taking too many pigs or whatever and wanting to up the number they can kill per dinosaur killing permit

If raptors are a nuisance it's because the Jurassic World society will have decided to protect them, not because they're entering some new age of the dinosaurs as the movie threatens. The Jurassic Park novel actually gets at this, with the compys, which are about the size of house cats, being the most successful of the dinosaurs at making themselves nuisances on the mainland.

The whole "They don't have feathers because there not real dinos" fails on several levels. Firstly, the idea Dinosaurs had feathers was still a controversial and somewhat niche idea at the time of the first movie. The First movie in-fact made it a very important plot point how close to natural the scientists (and the filmmakers) tried to make the Dino's, and it shows how in the first movie they behave more like dangerous animals than the movie monsters of the rest of the series. JP1 in fact explicitly went against "what people expect of Dinosaurs" which is why instead of slow like the popular conception, the dinos are fast. Instead of waddling upright like the general public thought it did at that time, T-Rex walks like a bird like the newest science said it did. The second problem comes from it contradicting the entire theming of the original. If these Dinosaurs are in-universe fictional fake animals why do the characters act like they need to save them from the Island like their an endangered resurrected species? If they are all fake theme park hybrids then why is the I-Rex and co. bad for being a fake theme park hybrid?

Holy poo poo thanks for posting this I about had a heart attack that a song that Paramount requested from us for an "Adobe Cross Promotion" that I licensed from a library was included in the project files that they just handed out to about a hundred thousand amateur editors. I don't see it in here and after going through the songs they don't seem to have any Terminator-sounding songs in here. Can you imagine the law suit that would happen before the weekend was over?
