Florida has a suspect pass defense, and Tennessee has good wideouts in Jauan Jennings and Marquez Callaway. Unfortunately for Tennessee, they don't have a quarterback. Tennessee's last win in Gainesville is old enough to get its drivers license, and recent history in Gainesville suggests some Gata magic to win if it's close

Jarrett Guarantano is basically Feliepe Franks but he has even less time to make lovely decisions because the OL is awful in pass protection.

Auburn would’ve been the better example I think but yeah, this feels like a completely different team. Last years team likely beats GSU and BYU

That's a little bit revisionist, as the Big 12 intentionally muddied the water after Baylor lost their first game by saying, unsolicited, "well, just so you know, TCU is technically also champ if they both finish 8-1." Yes, it was factually true, but at the same time the head-to-head was always decisive and unquesionted when it came to, say, bowl autobids.

There’s no muddied water. Baylor and TCU were co-champions under the league rules. There is no “technically” about it. Just like OU and Kansas State were co-champions in 2012, despite the head-to-head win going to KSU. There were no provisions for the championship being decided by head-to-head. The only provision of the sort was that if there were co-champions, the autobid would be decided by the head-to-head winner. But, again, that did not affect the champion status.

For the Big 12 to go and unilaterally declare Baylor (or Kansas State in 2012) the champion would require them to abandon the rules previously agreed upon prior to the season. This is how every round robin league has worked, up until we added our dumb championship game.

Everyone tries to make this out as the Big 12 trying to squirm their way in to get TCU into the CFP, but that’s just what the rules were.

General Dog
Apr 26, 2008

Everybody's working for the weekend
There was no onus on the Big 12 to declare either the "definitive" conference champion, and it wouldn't have made any difference if they had. My only note is that Big 12 officials at some point during the season (and in an official capacity if my memory serves correctly) chose to hang a lantern on the fact that Baylor and TCU could plausibly be co-champs. I don't know if they were looking to hedge their bets in case TCU stayed ahead of Baylor in the polls, or whether they hoped to get both in or what their objective was, but in any event it did no favors to either team. (For the record it probably didn't hurt either, Ohio State was always getting in over both of them after vaporizing Wisconsin and getting an extra win, and, you know, being Ohio State)

edit: You know what, it was a little bit different than I remembered

https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/11964184/big-12-present-tcu-baylor-co-champions

tl;dr, Bowlsby basically just re-iterated that the two were co-champs and that it wasn't the conference's job to elevate one or the other and do the selection committee's job for them, which is fair enough.

I am glad the committee ultimately put Baylor at #5 though, and that they get permanent rights to be the more aggrieved party (no, getting stomped by Bortles in the Fiesta doesn't invalidate it)

Yea, Stevens being injured already is gonna be what tanks our season if it lingers any longer. Our Offense ran really smoothly with him under center. The true freshman Shrader has shown a lot of promise, but he ain’t there yet.

We’ve also had numerous impact players out for suspensions/injuries.

This KSU loss hurts, but we can still have a good season if Stevens arm doesn’t fall off.

FWIW I think this K-State team is going to finish ~3rd in the Big XII behind Oklahoma and Texas and in hindsight this is going to be a really tough game for SoS.

Some small wishful thinking, maybe. We'll find out for real in two weeks @Ok State.

My bad football opinion is I don't quite understand the Notre Dame hatred.

They're usually not very good, and if they are, they always get stomped by a real team. I gather that it's because there are a bunch of wake up the echoes fans in the Midwest and Northeast, but they don't really exist in Texas, so they're not bothersome in the slightest.

lol no that was the season before when Baylor were the undisputed champs and their reward was having to play UCF while also-rans Oklahoma and Texas got bowls against Bama and Oregon, respectively. After they got left out of the playoff Baylor went to the Cotton Bowl and lost to Sparty 42-41. TCU beat Ole Miss 42-3 in the Peach Bowl.

What made it really egregious was that TCU was #3 as a 10-1 team in the second-to-last committee rankings, with 11-1 Ohio State at #5. TCU got dropped from #3 to #6 for beating Iowa State 55-3.

I think it’s a combination of a few things.

Many of their fans exist because of front-running bullshit. They’ve been preferential treatment in like every bowl system to date in spite of not joining a conference. Their fans are frequently holier-than-thou dickheads who crow about academics and blame poor performance on their “standards.”

One of my best friends is a lifelong ND fan and while I don’t hate ND as much as most people do, I get tired of his horseshit about academics being the real reason they’ve been bad for 25yrs and how no one else has standards for their athletes anymore.

They get too much exposure and are overrated every year. If you live in a town full of midwestern transplants their fans are everywhere.

One of my favorite sports memories was when Arizona State beat the hell out of them in 2014 and my friend (who is an ASU grad but grew up in South Bend) had a giant show-your-whole-rear end meltdown about it and accused everyone who thought it was funny of being the r-word and "basic bitches"

I have a soft spot for Notre Dame because they were some of the first football I was exposed to that I didn't immediately reject, via the Saturday Morning NBC games. But I definitely get annoyed at the overranking.

Yeah until you have to interact with them you don't get it man. One of my wife's college friends husband grew up in South Bend and went to ND. I got married the day ND beat USC in '17. His only words to me during the reception were "Congrats man and it's even more special because the Irish beat SC today." I have no ties to ND or the Midwest in general. However he assumed since I like college football I must like ND.

He honestly got a little confused when I responded with "Why do you assume I was rooting for they Irish? They can get hosed."

And that is an example of a pretty inoffensive and normal ND fan in my experience. They're awful, and the program getting propped up by NBC and a lot of sports media only makes them worse.
