It truly was unrealistic, he was elected purely on popularity from acting.

Even Trump needed assistance from Russia's DNC hack, the FBI Hillary investigations, biased gerrymandering, a broken electoral system, and opinion news networks running 24/7 verbal/written assaults on democratic ideology.

Republicans aren't into Arnold anymore because he had the audacity to believe in climate science and also because Trump made fun of him for having low TV ratings. Which, as we know, is what matters above all else.

I went to my local flea market yesterday and, my god, from a people watching perspective it really was a huge microcosm of the broken american. Mostly white, beaten up looking, broken, ugly, hopeless people meandering around buying yesterday's top of the line products that are now reduced to "useful junk". People too fat to walk riding around in scooters like in Wall-E whose budget is too tight to shop at Walmart.

It's like the world's largest estate sale from 30 years ago and I just kept thinking about people buying this stuff brand new back then. I felt like I was looking at a petri dish of rural american life and that everything I needed to know about dumb white people voting for the wrong poo poo was right there in front of me. It was still consumer culture but it looked like the merchant's plaza from Fallout 3.

There was Trump poo poo EVERYWHERE.

He's also not a party hack. The overwhelming majority of national-level Republicans aren't people who agree with the Republican party and choose to run on that platform to advance issues. They're really more like members of a conspiracy or a fraternity or a secret society. They advance in life largely through advancing in the party, and there's always a huge amount of reciprocity involved in being loyal and supporting the party and then receiving support from the party.

Trump and Arnold are not really Republicans in that same sense. Trump doesn't give a gently caress about Republican ideology or the party. Arnold I think agrees on many issues with Republicans, though my suspicion is he's closer to a classic fiscal conservative. But like Trump, he isn't invested in the future of the Republican party.

The big difference is the source of their revenue. Many many Republicans are Republicans in order to make a living. Trump and Arnold were independently wealthy, for different reasons, before they became Republican politicians.

The presence and power of this sort of machine politics is one of the fundamental factors leading to the growing disconnect between voters actual preferences and policy enacted on a national level. The Democrats have similar issues, though I think they are less rampant and intense.

One of my managers (BOH restaurant) complained yesterday about being broke, and was soliciting donations for cat food for his rescue cat. Said manager just got back from leave after having a minor stroke and a minor heart attack within six months, complete with the massive medical bills. Thirty minutes later he was red-faced and nearly shouting at me about how Obama was the one who put kids in cages, and antifa (he literally said "antifascists") are the real fascists, we don't want gang members coming here and taking er jerbs while not working and doing crimes and leeching off welfare, every fox news talking point in the book. Wonder why you had a stroke, Bill, all I said was that I didn't care for MAGA hats

The day manager is quitting and has no idea where he's gonna land because the company is loving around with his insurance premiums and triple-charged him, then refused to fix it. He is a screeching libertarian.

People that say crap like this forget decades of history of these folks voting for Democrats and socialists, and why that is no longer the case.

It's no coincidence at all that the party realignment started right around and after the civil rights movement. They don't care about making their lives better as much as making other people's lives worse.

yeah the problem is that while capitalism is kind of the root of the more backwards thinking a lot of the time there seems to be a belief that capitalism is the only think keeping it alive and abolishing it will just make it disappear like a lovely movie. You got to accept it’s something you have to deal with and capitalism alone won’t just make it go away

there’s a book out there called the righteous mind that goes into detail about why this might not work. the author is definitely probably a poo poo, and it makes no good normative claims, but it has some interesting tidbits in there.

the argument essentially boils down to: republican policies make certain people feel good. they reinforce the tribal dichotomies and hierarchies that give comfort to the conservative impulse for order and predictability.

we can choose to believe that everybody who makes less than 100k and votes republican are ‘voting against their interests’ because of media brainwashing, or we can examine the possibility that they are voting in interests other than their economic ones.

The unions were all racist except for the IWW, the inevitable result of ideological compromise and purging the actual communists and socialists, say nothing of the anarchists. Think of it as regulatory capture but for the collective expression of white working class interests.
