While we’re talking books...

If you don’t already have it, the Colonial Marines Technical Manual is a must-read (especially since it’s finally been reprinted):

Aliens: Colonial Marines Technical Manual https://www.amazon.com/dp/1781161313/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_TASIDb4MGTZJ1

This is real good if you want an incredibly comprehensive deep dive into ‘Alien’:

The Making of Alien https://www.amazon.com/dp/1789090555/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_4nSIDbS8X2KR

If you liked Alien: Isolation or like the retro-future aesthetic from ‘Alien’ and other movies of the era, the Alien: Isolation concept art book is pure art-porn:

The Art of Alien: Isolation https://www.amazon.com/dp/1781169314/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_yDSIDb89HBWJA

Regardless of your opinions on Alien Covenant, David’s hosed up artwork in his bestiary is worth your time:

Alien Covenant: David's Drawings https://www.amazon.com/dp/1785659243/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_jESIDb5KPEM55

The Weyland Yutani Report is a neat companion to the Tech Manual, although it has some errors and squanders its premise a bit by being a little less “comprehensive reference book” and more “lowest common denominator fanservice coffee table book”:

Alien: The Weyland-Yutani Report https://www.amazon.com/dp/160887866X/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_iISIDb3686F7B

The Book of Alien is an oddity, it’s almost like the USCM version of the Weyland-Yutani Report. It’s absolutely littered with grammatical errors and really, really needed an editor’s touch, but its got some wild references to super-obscure stuff and it’s got a place on my bookshelf just because it’s so strange. It’s got really good production values and artwork, but the text content is just.... something else:

The Book of Alien: Augmented Reality Survival Manual https://www.amazon.com/dp/0062695363/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_kKSIDb774W1EY

Just watched the theatrical Alien 3.

Had no attachement to any of the characters, including Ripley

Did feel rorted that hicks and newt die.

Action/suspense is building up and we then find out the alien wont kill ripley, making the entire finale pointless and boring.

Im going to say it was ok. And thats because ive seen covenent.

If you were seeing Alien 3 for the first time then yeah, it's a bit of a surprise how different it is and the whole Newt and Hicks death thing.

It was a big let down but I've watched it a lot more and sort of learned to like it.

I'd say go back and watch the assembly cut. Not that you wasted your time with the theatrical cut or anything, it's got some elements that I prefer, but just for the sake of comparing the two and seeing what was changed.

This thread inspired me to go grab the comics about Newt and Hicks. Of course I had to go and get the ones where everyone's names are different by mistake.

2 things. It looks like 9/11 happened in this continuity in the 2020s. And also the art is really dodgy so far, though I know by the middle 3rd it's a lot better.

I like that changing Hick's and Newt's names and calling Hadley's Hope "Rim" was enough. Like they went to rescue the survivors of a different colony with Vasquez and Apone and Frost but not the ones you're thinking of, some other marines.

And an un-named civilian woman.

Also I didn't know before I started that this is the first Aliens comic Dark Horse put out which is nuts. Like your first shot at a sequel to Aliens and you have Xenomorph death cults, an outbreak on Earth, the Xenomorph homeworld, Hicks being teen-Newt's alcoholic dad? You think you'd build to these things but they just throw them all in right at the start

Pissed Ape Sexist

Oh, dude, no-- the first one was just called 'Aliens' (later Aliens:Book One) and it's a classic. It's an explicitly in-universe follow up about Aliens getting to Earth, and set a decade or so after the movie. (It's the first graphic novel I ever bought and I can't count the number of lovely 6th-grader tracings I tried to do of this one huge beautiful hero panel of a xeno crouching outside a shuttle window.) It came out in... '88ish?

E: This pretty bastard

Earth Hive was the one Sam Keith illustrated and all the women look like Precious Moments figurines, right?

Holy poo poo, I googled and just learned that they retconned names and dialogue to eliminate explicit Hicks/Newt references along with colorizing everything due to Alien3 coming out-- I thought that was another comic entirely but it's due to being tied to a novel. Dumb switches/colorization aside ( and maybe it's just nostalgia talking) I still think the original b/w series rules despite being a bit quaint. My memories of the related comics are extremely hazy and I thought you were talking about the Sam Keith comics, which were ridiculous! (E: it was Earth War, not Earth Hive. 100% my bad.)

3 was an ok movie, but not really a good aliens film.

Hooked On A Feeling
Aliens is just the best goddamn movie ever. I saw it twice on the big screen when it was released in '86, and I've probably never gone a year since without rewatching it. In '86 I was in high school and we lived out in the sticks. My best bud at the time was also into sci-fi stuff, so for my third viewing I invited him to see it. I didn't have a car but he did; we're talking as we drive into town and I learn that he's NEVER been to a movie in his life. I'd met his parents a few times and they seemed like good country folk, but this was an eye-opener.

We had time before the movie to grab a bite, so we went through a McDonald's drive-thru and I learned that he'd never used a drive-thru in his life. I had to explain how it worked, "You talk to them through this mic and they talk back, etc." I was like WTF dude, are you safe at home?

The movie blew his loving mind, of course. We talked about it afterward for ages, but high school eventually ended and we drifted apart.

I thought about him from time to time over the years, kinda patting myself on the back for taking his movie virginity with the best movie ever, until about a decade later when I tried to track him down and was only able to reach his parents. Apparently he'd joined the Marines, seen some combat, and had some sort of psychological breakdown. I eventually reached him and he didn't sound too good.

So now I'm left to wonder if maybe taking him to Aliens wasn't the best idea. But it's still the best movie ever.

The kid that showed me Aliens also ended up joining the USMC right out of highschool too (and we're Canadian). But I couldn't say for sure that it was just the depiction of the USCM in the movie; he was into a lot of other war stuff and also not very mentally stable as a teenager.

Theatrical is only worth watching as a compare and contrast for the recut, and should be watched after the recut.

The pitched sound of the full-auto fire in Aliens is one of my favourite little details. I heard a rumour a while ago that that's actually what blanks sound like under cyclic fire, because they're not topped up with exactly the same amount of powder every round so the pitch varies; Cameron just made a creative decision to not overdub with 'real live fire' sounds. But I asked about it in TFR and they said it's probably not true - more likely it's just gunfire run through a guitar flanger pedal or something.
