Didn’t Jack Thompson get disbarred for being an enormous pain in the rear end? There’s precedent here.

That is a shocking under-exaggeration of reality.

quote:

In February 2007, The Florida Bar filed disbarment proceedings against Thompson over allegations of professional misconduct. The action was the result of separate grievances filed by people claiming that Thompson made defamatory, false statements and attempted to humiliate, embarrass, harass or intimidate them.[146] According to the complaint, Thompson accused Alberto Cardenas of "distribution of pornography to children", claimed that the Alabama judge presiding over the Devin Moore case "breaks the rules, even the Alabama State Bar Rules, because he thinks that the rules don't apply to him", and sent a letter to Blank Rome's managing partner, saying, "Your law firm has actively and knowingly facilitated by various means the criminal distribution of sexual material to minors." Thompson claims that the complaints violate state religious protections because his advocacy is motivated by his Christian faith.[147]

In May 2008, Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Dava Tunis, after reviewing 2,400 pages of transcripts and 1,700 pages of exhibits, recommended that Thompson be found guilty of 27 of the 31 violations of which he had been accused, including making false statements to tribunals, disparaging and humiliating litigants and other lawyers, and improperly practicing law outside of Florida. Thompson filed a motion with the Florida Supreme Court the day after the report was issued to strike Tunis' recommendations as vague for lack of detail. Previously, Thompson had attempted to have Tunis thrown off his case, and filed a complaint against her with the state Judicial Qualifications Commission, which is responsible for investigating judges.[148]

On June 4, 2008, prosecutor Sheila Tuma recommended 'enhanced disbarment' for Thompson, saying that Thompson demonstrated continued misconduct, a pattern of misconduct and persistently failed to admit any wrongdoing. Enhanced disbarment lengthens the period before an attorney may reapply for admission to the bar from five years to ten. After being prevented from making a speech to begin the disciplinary hearing, Thompson distributed his written objections to lawyers, a court reporter, and a newspaper reporter, departed the courtroom, and called the proceedings against him a "star chamber" and "kangaroo court".[149]

On July 8, 2008, Judge Tunis recommended permanent disbarment and a $43,675.35 fine for Thompson to the Florida Supreme Court, citing "cumulative misconduct, a repeated pattern of behavior relentlessly forced upon numerous unconnected individuals, a total lack of remorse or even slight acknowledgment of inappropriate conduct, and continued behavior consistent with the previous public reprimand... Over a very extended period of time involving a number of totally unrelated cases and individuals, the Respondent has demonstrated a pattern of conduct to strike out harshly, extensively, repeatedly and willfully to simply try to bring as much difficulty, distraction and anguish to those he considers in opposition to his causes... He does not proceed within the guidelines of appropriate professional behavior, but rather uses other means available to intimidate, harass, or bring public disrepute to those whom he perceives oppose him."[150][151][152] The court approved the recommendation and fine on September 25, 2008, and ordered that Thompson be permanently disbarred effective 30 days from the date of the order so Thompson could close out his practice.[153][154] He later filed for an emergency stay of the Florida Supreme Court's order with the U.S. District Court, which was ultimately denied. In an e-mail to media outlets, Thompson responded to the court's decision by stating, "The timing of this disbarment transparently reveals its motivation: This past Friday Thompson filed a federal civil rights action against The Bar, the Supreme Court, and all seven of its Justices. This rush to disbarment is in retribution for the filing of that federal suit. With enemies this foolish, Thompson needs only the loyal friends he has." He closed the email—in which he included the court ruling—with, "...this should be fun, starting now".[155][156][157]

On September 19, 2009, Thompson announced that he intended to resume practicing law as of October 1, 2009, claiming that he was "never disbarred" because all of the orders resulting in his disbarment were legal nullities.[158] He dared The Florida Bar to get a court order to stop him.[158]

I took years for Thompson to get to that point iirc so it'd be a while if they were to be disbarred on those grounds.

I was playing Borderlands 3, and I like the Lorelei character. I looked up the VA, and was surprised to see Jamie Marchi was the VA.

Made me smile, because she not only got a VERY satisfying win in court but she ALSO managed to do an extremely good job voicing a fun character.

"Likelihood of being disbarred" seems to be tied at least in part to "how visible a stain you are on the legal profession as a whole" so I'd say Ty's chances are higher than if he'd had this exact same performance in court with literally any other less-public client, tbh

It's pretty funny - Marchi has been harassed by chuds before ever since she put anti-GamerGate references in her dub scripts and they badgered Funimation to never hire her and Funimation didn't care and kept on hiring her, and you'd still see today they assume she doesn't get any work. Except she still totally gets work. Unfortunately for her, Jamie's kinda used to people being stupid at her on the internet.

GAMERDOME put down LOSER
Isn't Marchi the one who also made some weird changes to the Maid Dragon dub, like having the lead go "nah I'm straight" which alters the whole story?

Captain Baal

Marchi wrote a line in that hard confirmed Kobayashi as straight missing the point that Kobayashi's gender is supposed to be ambiguous and then got mad when people criticized her for it. A similar thing happened with the Gamergate line in Prison School where she wrote some Gamgergate joke into a character's dialogue that wasn't funny and dated the dub hard (They even later removed it in the DVD release). She of course got harassed by lovely chuds for the latter, but she makes questionable decisions with some of the calls she makes on her own with the script writing. Ironically she wrote the dub script to Yurikuma Arashi which is super faithful to the original which came out before Maid Dragon did, so idk what happened there.

Regardless to some level I'm sure Funimation leads encourage their script writers to punch up a script if need be and while that's fine sometimes, it's really bad in the cases of like the Yume Nikki dub where one of the characters drops a "Who watches the Watchmen?" line of all loving things and there's a million lines of obnoxiously kitschy dialogue sometimes. So idk how much Marchi can be blamed for that, but she doesn't deserve to be harassed and she doesn't deserve this lovely case so I'm glad they got her out of it. Hopefully Rial gets out of this poo poo soon too, because I actually like Monica Rial a lot.

From what I gather Marchi misunderstood the context and didn't like how the original line sounded - because it came off to her that it meant Kobayashi had a problem with lesbians - and over-corrected. Also doing a simuldub script means you have to have the thing finished like yesterday so it doesn't give a lot of research time.

I mean so was YKA and that's infinitely more abstract than Kobayashi is, but that's neither here nor there. It was a bad call, she made a mistake and you just move on from there unless you're one of the weirdos online who decided to hold a personal grudge with her forever over it.She didn't react the best way, but I think she can hardly be blamed for how any person just trying to do their job and being attacked for it would.

What's wrong with that line? Something from the context of the show? Because "who watches the watchmen" is a common translation of a Latin phrase, that gets used a good bit, doesn't seem that bad.

The context of the situation is Aru is revealing he has a phone that allows him to witness the diaries of Yuki's that can see the future and how he'll try to change it too. The script writers took it as an opportunity to add some pinache and had Aru in the dub say "My phone is now the one that watches the watchmen" and while yes it is absolutely a valid translation of Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?, the original context does not in any way reference that line and it is 100% the script writers trying to be cute and it took me out of the scene super loving hard. It isn't like the worst rewrite in the world, but a lot of that poo poo happens in the Mirai Nikki dub, sometimes it works a lot of times it feels very out of place. Not that I find Mirai Nikki the most engaging show in the world, but there were several times watching the dub I was confused as to loving why it felt like the dialogue was unnecessarily quirky and it turned out, yep, it was in fact the script writers taking a decent amount of liberties with the material.

Also I meant Mirai Nikki and not Yume Nikki like my previous post implied. I get my diary shows mixed up.

It is a dub from 6 years ago. Only two years after this would Funimation dub the Danganronpa anime and do the same loving poo poo they did there only infinitely more insufferable and with some really bad performances. They managed to make Chris Sabat sound like loving poo poo, a thing I thought was undoable considering how well Sabat gels to any role he's put in. Allowing improv from the voice actors can make for better takes than the original Japanese versions on some stuff and show a surprising amount of comedic talent in some VAs but man, a lot of these people are really unfunny sometimes and make the lamest jokes.

Funimation did similar with Panty and Stocking, the dub of which I refused to watch because they turned a joke about Panty liking sex into "haha Roman Polanski rapes children ad we gave him money". I'm a pretty staunch proponent of being liberal as hell with translations but there's gotta be limits or you're just making an awful thing.

It was the episode where Panty made a movie that was secretly just porn and the dub said "We spent a lot of money to get Roman Polanski out of the country so he could direct this for us" which was said, you know, right when his extradition stuff was back in the media. It's dated and gross and unnecessary.

The PSG dub is a good example of a show that is enhanced by the kind of quirky writing I was talking about. Not every joke is a winner, but it is pretty universally enhanced by the dub writing for taking an already pretty insane show and amping up the raunchiness and stupid poo poo in the dialogue.
