FMguru posted:There was a Cletus Safari piece a few months ago (NPR or NYT, I forget) that went to Youngstown to interview people to see how they were taking Trupm's tarrif war, and literally every "local" they quoted was a white retiree from the country-club gated suburb 20 miles outside of the city. yeah lol, back during the 2016 general when the Carrier stuff was going on here the press descended on the workers there for statements, but wouldn't you know it, at this majority black workforce plant it was only white conservative and managerial types who got platformed? I can imagine the journos driving through the actual town they're reporting on checking at every red light that their doors are locked because they saw a check cashing place a couple blocks back

I don't think it's fair or accurate to attribute around half of Americans not bothering to vote simply to being uninspired. There's an element of laziness, willful ignorance and "both sides" bullshit, along with disenfranchisement and the fact that many people work two jobs or don't have ONE that will excuse them long enough to get it done. If you're a wage earner, have a kid, any sort of health or transportation issues and lack in free time in general, it can be a chore. I've met a ton of people who wear the not voting badge as a symbol of honor and gently caress that. Fact is, when turnout is high, leftist policies and democratic candidates do well but, also, sitting around and waiting for the perfect candidate to "inspire" you when you either lack the ambition or the time to get involved is often a total cop out. You can make the time once every 4 years - at least most people can. I loathe the idea of a Joe Biden candidacy and hope he's not our nominee but I will crawl across broken glass to vote for him if it comes to that. I don't think that makes me part of a larger problem in and of itself. Maybe it does.

I’ll offer this: barring something drastic, I will never contribute to the election of a president, senator or governor unless I vote republican. that is certainly a souring notion for many people. that or I move a minimum of 2 states away as every state I border has the same issue.

Ross Davidson, who retired in 2017 after 21 years with the agency, said he was certain that stress from the job has been a factor. "The repetitive monotony of doing the same thing over and over and seeing no outcome, seeing no end to it and nothing changing,” he said. “It’s just going deeper and deeper, and getting worse and worse." quote:The public animosity toward Border Patrol agents isn't surprising considering the amount of bad press they've been involved in. Early last year, video circulated showing Border Patrol agents destroying water jugs left in the desert for migrants. This year, it came out that dozens of agents belonged to a private Facebook group in which they mocked dead migrants and threatened Hispanic politicians. Customs and Border Protection, the agency overseeing the Border Patrol, announced that it wouldn't administer flu vaccines in camps, held an American teenager for nearly a month despite him having proof of citizenship, and deported and revoked the visa of a Palestinian college student because of his friends' social media. Wonder why they're hated...
