idk I guess I'd feel sort of bad for some Boomer who fucks their entire life over by getting addicted to fake casino fun bucks to the tune of thousands of dollars, but not that bad. And certainly not because someone called them a whale because of their spending. And they'd also have to get in line behind every single person who doesn't have access to an amount of money that would allow them to prop up an entire videogame company in the first place.

I feel bad for the mom who has 5000 in fifa bills that EA wont refund and the kids who get conditioned to crave skinner box rewards but if you wanna be the guy who pays an entire office's salary and its not hurting you financially i guess thats ok, but the dev should have to give you a producers credit.

I hope everyone is ready for Halo:Anthem where there is barely a story and they’ll just fill it in later (note: poor sales of Halo:Anthem have forced MS to cancel their roadmap, sorry).

A true whale is somebody who doesnt feel the pain of the money theyre spending. Addicts are absolutely invited to destroy their lives over a game, but the difference between somebody who maxes their credit cards and blows their life savings and a single do nothing scion is several 0s in spending and the latter doesnt ever have to stop.

If anything lootbox gaming is just a recognition of how extremely unequally wealth is distributed in this world and an attempt to make games selectively more expensive for those who can bear that burden.

NT has yet to make a game where the combat was good but they make fantastic looking setpieces.

Related to that, Im comfortably predicting their new game which is only combat and has no setpieces will score in the mid 60s on metacritic

No matter how obvious it was that problems like "we let Bungie go" wasn't going to be solved by throwing money at it, it's still really shocking to see every single tentpole exclusive for MS outside of Forza just fall over and catch on fire.

I think they did a good job salvaging Gears after Epic nearly killed the IP with how awful Judgment was. Gears 4 was essentially going straight back to the third game and making the bare minimum changes just so they had a foundation and could prove they knew what they were doing, and 5 is now expanding on that a little. I'm glad that they're not loving with the formula or trying to reinvent the franchise.

343 really poo poo the bed with Halo though and you could see in Halo 4 how they were using a lot of design ideas Bungie had planned for Destiny (Spartan Ops were basically Destiny strikes/nightfalls, for example) but it was very technically impressive given the hardware it was running on. Don't know what they were thinking with Halo 5.

Nobody ITT posted the Jim Sterling video where he puts the blame on Microsoft for much of the worst excesses of the AAA video game industry. I think calling them the prime mover is a bit much because the EAs and Activisions of the world would have done it without their approval, but the Xbox One shoehorning microtransactions into their exclusives certainly didn't help.

Wasn't it Bethesda that started all of that with the horse armor for Oblivion early last console gen? I think they were the first ones to do it and there was an uproar at the time with people complaining about what it would lead to if it was accepted and they were completely right :aaa:

Double Dragon 3 did it in 1990, and the backlash was serious enough for the publisher to patch it out in later versions.

It really is impressive how badly 343 botched the Halo franchise and it's also super obvious they didn't really get what Bungie was doing with Halo 1-3 thematically, which is amazing because of how blatantly obvious the games are about it.

Relatedly did you know the Spartan Laser in-game is also known as the Grindell/Galilean Rifle? You know, to really drive the point home?

A lot of people here rip on the single player, but I think the focus on that is completely wrong. It's the multiplayer that 343 truly botched hardcore. Turning the game into Call of Duty was a horrible call. Halo no longer stood out from everything else, meaning its multiplayer community tanked very quickly once Halo 4 came out. Poor deathmatch map design, removing most if not all of the weapon placement around maps, and giving it Call of Duty like time to kill, completely ruined what made Halo exciting.

Even before that, 343 hosed up the Reach multiplayer when they took it over. I used to play a ton of Reach with my roommates at the time, then suddenly one day we couldn't go into most of the playlists-including basic poo poo like Slayer and big team battle-split screen unless they had their own Live gold accounts. We could only get into a rotating selection of grab bag playlists for wacky custom modes. It sucked rear end.

It's both pro-religion/faith, as a general concept, and anti-evangelical, which is uncommon at best in America (though it is also boner-poppingly pro-military). It also does not actually give a poo poo about America - most of the fighting on Earth is in Africa, and all you really see or hear of the US is if you glance at Earth from space in 2 and 3 you can see the east coast burning. It takes heavy inspiration (pretty much blatant theft acutally) from Aliens and the Colonial Marines so the soldiers are all oorah troops but in-game it's actually a truly universal force.

Basically with that Spartan Laser weapon I mentioned, at the end of Halo 3, after breaking the Covenant (and after the rebelling alien forces join with humanity against the zealots, whose main force are the savage-ape like gas-guzzling--and-iron-shooting monsters, the Brutes), the man named John literally shoots the Divine Spark with the weapon called the Galilean on the Ark of God before going on to shatter the Halo, the proof of divinity, to turn back God's Flood. Master Chief is a Christ figure but the initial trilogy is more concerned with Christ as a human man, which is also interesting as little really is.

The game is the least subtle thing on Earth and 343 missed it entirely.

The multiplayer was pretty okay in 4 but I couldn't be bothered with 5's, I just think it's extra obvious how little they really cared or focused on what the series really was with the themes. There's still some Halo in there in multi at the least.

lmao

It's not the most consistent thing either but there's a lot there to unpack and its interesting to see how it both evolved them then threw them away.

Reach multi instantly turned to dogshit when they took over and made the new rulesets that were just MLG esport variants but half-assedly so so nobody was happy with it.
