I can't even enjoy weed and I think this argument is dumb.

Enjoy it how you like, who gives a gently caress? Just do it relatively safely so you don't hurt someone else in the process.

As for the actual thread:

Rare NYT article worth reading - a longform by a writer who returned to her hometown in Arkansas and was blown away (and deeply saddened) by how cruel and grasping everyone around her was (the article is centered around efforts to hire a full-time County librarian, which the locals refuse to pay for, because who reads "books" anyway, amirite?). Every nickel not spent on themselves is "government waste". They vote to make everything around them as lovely as possible, and then they wonder why everything is so lovely, and then they blame immigrants and homos and the fancy city folk who look down on them and don't even work real jobs nohow. A Cletus Safari, but one that is specifically NOT sympathetic to heartlanders.

They already do that's what's hosed up. The only kind of jobs that lovely small towns have is bitch level retail and stuff that's actually decent requires experience that's impossible to get if you live there your whole life. You theyre stuck working the same 24 hour a week minimum wage bullshit people in cities have to except there's also jack poo poo to do except binge drink and get a drug addiction.

now the real funny/hosed thing is that there's a decent chance that single payer will still miss these guys if there isn't free medical school as well because even if they can get decent pay to do it most doctors don't want to live in bumfuck surrounded by chuds so there will be like a decade break at best where they still don't have any doctors.

Conservative counties and blue states are living in a hell of their own making and they're too stubborn, ignorant, and hateful to actually admit they were wrong or to spend even the slightest cent to possibly help another human being. It would be almost laughable if decades of conservative manipulation and gerrymandering hadn't given these shitholes insane voting power to drag everyone else down with too.

this is a good article about that phenomenon. You've got one old guy who is the only doctor for three counties, an area that's as big as Maryland.

they get a new grad who accepts a job offer there, and other rural counties beg to recruit him like he's the #1 pick in the NFL draft.

these places are so completely hosed, and most of the doctors that would actually want to work there are going to be the wrong color and from the wrong country.

Free healthcare and widespread rail service would utterly destroy rural America because all the youth leave those areas at the first opportunity and the only ones who don't are either chuds, too broke to get a car and move or have a seriously sick family member they have to take care of. remove the last two and RIP your workforce

well there's also people like me who manage to score a decent job and move in from outside but there's a 50% chance they'll move on in 4 years once their resume is sufficiently padded so we don't really count

apparently the immigration of medical professionals from other countries was the main way a lot of these towns were keeping their hospitals staffed, but between the huge changes that are being made to immigration policy and the fact that many skilled immigrants are re-thinking whether or not they actually want to live in the US, even that spigot is drying up.

most of the trump people in bumfuck AR or shithole OK or whatever aren't even a long term problem. between type 2 diabetes and their various addictions and their derelict health systems, those folks have already all but signed their death warrants. the bigger, on-going issue is going to be the shithead regressives from middle and upperclass white communities that can afford to pay for their healthcare and will otherwise live to continue spewing their hateful bullshit. gavin and spencer and smol ben et al are going to be more responsible for the long term damage done, not cletus and his rapidly dwindling number of years left on this earth

i'd appreciate it greatly

but yeah the people here are human, they care about people besides their own family in their own way, voting is just a thing they do every once in a while to show solidarity, they're just ignorant af... problem mostly is they don't want to not be ignorant because that'd be 'brainwashing' themselves. it's actually quite rough out here and the everyone for themselves i didnt get a handout mentality is too easy for outside influences to reinforce

that said i have a hard time in general, not talking to them because theyll want to start fistfights that theyll then escalate into shootings, etc

i would tend to agree, but just so people can't whine about authoritarianism we should just make the offer to move for free, and then abandon the unsustainable areas. if people want to try and live out here regardless, they're welcome to give it a try. but i don't think a lot of people realize just how much they depend on other places for stuff

A few decades back I would contend that family-owned farms, community ties and a desire to live life simply would say you are wrong.

But Republicans and massive agri-business killed most independent farmers, which added to the isolation and anger that fuels point two, and point three has been so poisoned by FYGM and racism to be pretty much a toxic trap. So you are spot-on there.

Which is sad. I am from one of those small towns, and every year it gets smaller and more petty. In a few decades it won't exist, and that is the optimistic outlook. Hell, I know several families that went through this same exodus, from losing the farm to dying of prescription complications.

I wish I could make it better. Incentivize smaller farms, create rail hubs to bring in jobs and traffic, improve conditions in these areas to help bring in doctors and new hires to keep the population fresh. But, as pointed out, no one wants to live in these places, not just because of the lack of opportunity but because these people have gone full-on fash loving fools who fear everything outside their ever-shrinking bubble. It is heartbreaking to watch my home die and know that it's death will be a net positive.

It's racism. The Right has spent a lot of time and money convincing these people that a destroyed society is the necessary price to pay to prevent White Genocide. They would vote Communist in a hot second if they were guaranteed that minorities would be legally barred from benefitting. They're beholden to a Zero-Sum view of race relations that believes that their own individual happiness and prosperity is the exact inverse of minority misery.

they don’t. they don’t understand the benefits of society and do everything they can to actively avoid society. they would live alone on their land thinking they need nothing from anyone ever. they just never actually consider what that means.

they think their pittance of property taxes and utilities cover all the costs of infrastructure and maintenance and are in no way subsidized by larger cities’ requirements.

they don’t want to believe anything that contradicts their world view, especially if they’re offered proof. they’ll twist anything they see or hear to fit their narrative.

it’s basically just an impenetrable wall of bullshit.

another thing i was thinking about based off my personal experience is just how hosed up living in a small town as a kid makes you for when you need to move to a large city for any sort of hope at a job and are able to actually make it out. i know it's a matter of being unable to afford better and thus is deeply a class issue but honestly it's almost child abuse to raise a child in a small town

I'm not even 100% sure you can chalk it up to outright racism. Which sucks because at least that would make a type of sense. A lot of people are just short-sighted, selfish, proudly ignorant and just overall idiots. Although obviously racism gets its thumb on the scale.

I'm not from that state, but I see the same stuff in my smaller town and around my redneck state. Oh sure, just slash the entire arts and culture budget. It's fine and there's definitely no way to pay for it. Sure, refuse to pay teachers anything close to a reasonable wage or give them healthcare. Sure, kill that school levy because how dare they raise a few million for a nice cafeteria that they're going to use for the next 20 years. Wait, they want to consolidate two schools out of desperation (and to address how few people are left). I will scream to the heavens until you stop. Then I'll vote no on the next levy. Sure, waste a shitload of money on coal subsidies, and keeping a coal power plant open and refuse to collect taxes on the coal companies.

Oh, wow, the state's broke and we have lovely schools and no culture or anything to do, and no wants to live here. Who could have seen that coming?

It's a special kind of broken brain issue and I'm really not sure how anyone can fix it, except for no joke taking away 60+ year-olds' right to vote.

Its this. I'm in one of the only jobs that pays a decent wage and the townies are spiteful AF. My name and salary is in the paper twice a year as a "look at how your tax dollars are spent." Every time there's a teachers strike cause the school board is full of chuds the townies freak out "teachers shouldn't strike they make too much money!" Add stubborness and racism to the mix. There's basically no hope for this area to become something decent and the only saving grace is the median age is 60~.

It's definitely, 98% racism... it's just that it's systematic and often subconscious racism and xenophobia influenced by decades of dog whistle propaganda that's immersed America for so long that people just kind of instinctually make. If you listen to any of those sorts of arguments you can see the blatantly transparent logic processes behind it. "My money's being taken for welfare > welfare queens, thugs, other dog whistle terms > brown people are scary and subhuman and don't deserve my help". "Intellectuals are saying things I don't believe or that make me feel scary > They're all making more money and living and better lives than me > Everything they're saying is communist propaganda/perfidious jew rhetoric/whatever." Most people really only consciously recognize the first or second layer and never feel a need to confront why they feel the way they do, but that doesn't change any of the deeper implications of any of it.

The only reason I'm not saying it's 100% racism is because there's probably some small subset of conservatives that are just sociopathic and hate the very concept of helping people in general, but honestly most of those are just openly racist as well.
