I disagree that Jess Phillips has done good work around that particular issue, she's been textbook adequate. But yeah the left has absolutely failed in it's response to Rotherham and the widespread, still spreading issue. The actual left response should be obvious, there is a hateful sub-culture using religion to justify racially targeting vulnerable young women and girls, but it's all been hosed up by woke neoliberalism and the liberal left just refuse to engage with it. There is a core of, my guess, 4% of British voters that quite rightly were politically awoken by the disgusting poo poo that happened in Rotherham and all we have as a response is these idiots that that don't consider 'hey weird coincidence the EDL arose there of all places eh?'. All we have is shitheads calling them facists and wanking off over milkshakes but ignoring working class girls being plied with heroin and gang raped. It's disgusting and makes me hate these cunts that call themselves the left.

Blue screen, they couldn't use that in LoTR because of Elijah Wood's beautiful big blue eyes its why they had to get a child of equal height to play him when there was an orc in the same shot.

We do actually have a racist fictional monster that emerged quite recently, though - orcs as stand-ins for black people date back to the 1970s, although they also draw on a fair amount of inspiration from interbellum fantasy. As well as being incredibly cute, this is a good compromise, and a lot of goblin RPers have taken to the idea that it is the shininess and not the value - a goblin would happily trade a dull gold bar for a Claire's accessories tiara, for example. Games Workshop neatly sidestepped the racism / orcs thing by making them football hooligans. Sloth Life posted:I loved the Misty Mountains song, so haunting and sad. But like I said about Paltrow above, it's rarely the actors, it's the filmmakers. I doubt Cumberbatch would have refused if he had been asked to suit up. E: For example, a lot of Marvel actors have complained that everyone is working under insane nondisclosure agreements, so they turn up to a greenscreen set with only the barest instruction (its alien and they should look scared), given a page or so of script so they can't work out the plot and leak it online. Then a year, year and a half later they turn up to the premiere thinking "Wait, is that what that was?" and realising that if they'd known, they would have made completely different acting choices. I don't think the Cumberbatch thing is true anyway. Just read up on it - they shot his scenes for Infinity War with a body double because he wasn't available due to scheduling, and then for any where you see his face they reshot. So yeah a lot of the scenes where you don't see his face will be his stunt guy, but that's probably true for lots of the actors in these kinds of films anyway. They used body-doubles for ScarJo for some of them because she was pregnant. They haven't superimposed anyone's face onto a double's body though I don't think - I mean for one thing that'd be super hard because the two people would have to track movements so precisely.

A common trick with Marvel films has been to film a scene with a stunt double, recreate it in CG, and film it with the big name actors. They then cut bits from each version to create the final film. There was a bunch of YouTube videos about Black Panther's filming process and they showed how the scenes that got a bigger budget and more time turned out great but the bad scene like the ending fight were rushed and they didn't include all the layering and lighting FX because everyone was so overworked. Also the car chase in civil war actually had them running on top of moving cars at 40kph. They dragged rugs behind the cars and had the stunt doubles practice jogging on them at low speed, in heavy rubber suits until they could sprint flat out without losing balance as the car hit 40kph.

Not that plastic straw bans would have anything but a symbolic effect on plastic consumption, never mind plastic ending up in nature. Bottle deposit schemes and paying for plastic bags have impact. Getting fishermen to clean up their gear would have a far bigger impact.

Are you at least getting a tub of opioids?Ms Adequate posted:Not to do with any current thread issue but I wanted to share this because it's a good video about why plastic straw bans are real bad for some disabled people. That might be stigmatizing in the same way that having a crutch or a blue badge or a hearing aid is stigmatizing, but in all of those cases we accept the solution is "stop being cunts to people using a crutch or a blue badge or a hearing aid, if you see anyone being a oval office to someone using a crutch or a blue badge or a hearing aid then call them out" rather than us all using assistive tech that we don't need. Reducing plastic straw use to a few percent of present while still not being a dick about it would be good, in the same way that doing that with personal cars would be good. (Although yeah, I agree with the theme of the video, that blanket prohibition is a bad idea. That's usually the case with blanket prohibitions.)

The issue with plastic straws was the sheer number of people who used them, and the crazy number of places who just included them for no reason. Most people don't need a straw to drink, it shouldn't be the default to include them. Everyone and their gran jumped on board to start refusing them, which is good because single use non-residential items shouldn't be the norm. But that wasn't why most people were doing it, they were largely doing it to stop marine plastic pollution and save turtles, despite the fact the overwhelming amount of non-recyclable plastic in the UK is put to landfill (probably recyclable plastic too). There is nothing inherently wrong with people refusing them, but many of the same people seem to be unwilling to educate themselves on ways to make a bigger impact to marine plastics, such as not eating fish - discarded fishing nets account for the source of as much as 50% of marine plastic in many studies. I've not thought much of the the issue with disabled people, so thanks Ms Adequate. It would irresponsible to stop using a lot of single use plastics (medical packaging, items for people who need assistance, phones, etc). But also lol that people aren't outraged that McDonald's put a paper straw through their plastic lids, literally the dimmest mitigation ever achieved imo. E; sorry for the rant
