Perhaps instead of private companies being marketplaces we should just have marketplaces. Crazy I know.

Personally, I prefer GoG, since it's got a real nice commitment to customer service and making sure that the games you buy actually work. Largely I'm against one big company acting as a funnel through which the bulk of computer games have to go through, and I liked Valve better when they were a developer instead of just a publisher.

GOG's great, if only for starting the idea that it's worthwhile to make old games workable on new OSes, and is literally why we have old ones also available on Steam. GoG, Steam, Humble are all decent marketplaces right now. Epic is hot steaming garbage even if you just look at store functionality. Add to that the skeevy practices of trying to simply buy exclusivity for every PC games they can get their hands on and... lol. //edit oh yeah and the sales they force on devs, another good laugh // (take note: Origin and Uplay are also bad™ for these exact same reasons) ----------------------------- I'm actually really looking forward to Paradox's new game. Victoria would be amazing, but something new and untried is also 100% welcome. I liked Stellaris more than Endless space 1/2, and would be intrigued by a Paradox response to Endless Legends.

A PDX version of Illwinter's Dominions would be cool. Random world gen, magic systems, religions. But only if they bite the bullet like Illwinter did and make actual factions, not the proc gen poo poo from Stellaris.

I think a sequel to any other game than Victoria would be pretty unacceptable, but if they're making something completely new w/e. I will judge that on its own merits.

Epics strategy is working for devs and users alike. They’re breaking up the monopoly pretty okay-ly too. If Paradox is making this call, I trust em. Speaking of, is there an info dump on the game I can read, beyond “frostpunk but warm”?

Is Paradox moving to entirely Epic or just this one semi-indie game they happen to be publishing?

I can't see any indication of developer one way or the other so it could be that Haemimont is making it. That said, Haemimon's own website lists "creating or expanding franchises" as being one of the company's specialities, so maybe Paradox owning the IP and being able to shop it to another developer was part of the plan from the start.

Monopolies suck rear end but I'm getting tired of having to juggle a bunch of different accounts across a bunch of different services. Nationalise Steam.

From everything I've heard from the dev side of things, Epic actually kinda offer an amazing deal for them, so, that's pretty cool. I'll wait until the steam release though.

If anything the whole Epic games exclusivity nonsense has taught me that I absolutely don't have to play every game that comes out and, am in fact more happy playing what I already have more in-depth. So go on, get your fortnite money if you must, but I absolutely won't be buying while it's exclusive. In fact, I'll probably have a much better experience after the fact, as the game will have been patched several times and have more content (probably bundled at no extra cost) by the time it hits steam.

gonna rule when digital game distribution goes the way of video streaming and piracy starts to pick back up because it becomes a massive pain in the rear end to juggle 6 different games services

Especially with Paradox, whose early release versions are notoriously underdeveloped and whose two recent flagship games had an abysmal launch. I can't think of a worse company to take an exclusivity deal from Epic.

Any company that competes with steam the way that, y'know, marketplaces typically compete irl is actually the real monopoly, because you can no longer continue to use just one service for literally every game on the PC. Similarly, the monopolies of Google and Facebook are good, actually, because it's so convenient and convenience is all that matters at the end of the day.
