the cycle is larger because we’re reaching the end stage of capitalism

in ‘72 it was still possible to put yourself thru college debt free, graduate, get a good job, buy a house, and support a stay at home housewife and 2 kids before you’re 40, so it was easier to hoodwink people into falling for the lie of the american dream.

Nobody but boomers and the dumbest chuds still believe in that line of BS anymore, so the right has had to get more blatant with the racism to get those conservative white poors fired up and out to the polls.

I was gonna stick this in the USPOL thread but it will get lost there and it sort of fits here

I've started re-reading Hunter S. Thompson's "Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail: 72" and, my god, does it read like a synopsis of what's going on now. Maybe with a little less blatant criminality since Nixon hadn't hit Watergate yet but the stuff about disaffected voters, uninspiring candidates, trouble getting the youth vote to turn out, the sleazy Madison Avenue approach to grooming people running, the general instinct for averting the truth and manufacturing "charisma"...it all hits really close to home.

I'm only about 70 pages in and if you just swapped a few names and a war or two around it would read a lot like what's taking shape now. He talks a lot about what drove Nixon voters and how hard it was to get people to turn out for McGovern - or even turn out at all - and was at the top of his game as a writer then.

Maybe it doesn't fit here at all so I'll go cross post it but the main feeling I get from reading it is just how truly cyclical all this really is and how the same people keep falling for the same poo poo and being hosed by the same things. I think they cycle is LARGER now, like an outward spiral, so the extremes are getting more pronounced. The main question I have is when one or the other flies out of orbit.

otoh i still believe that in 100 years history will put far greater emphasis on the bush/cheney years than on the trump era. trump seems very different and significant now, but is, as is very frequently pointed out, more a symptom of deep underlying issues than a very notable presidency in any effect or philosophy.

i.e. i think he was correct to consider that the true low point from the perspective of true charlatanism.

Eh, they'll happily adopt anything you decide to call them in the end but at least with forced birthers you get to describe their own beliefs as identical to those of slave rapists for identical reasons

Anti choice is like, well of course they are they're theocratic reactionaries, their whole identity is wanting a strong white daddy to tell them what to do

Speaking of theocratic reactionaries, here's a fun bit from the Guardian's latest safari piece:

quote:

Nery thinks Trump is certainly doing things no president has done before but they do not include fulfilling the promises he made to “drain the swamp” and put the interests of ordinary Americans first. For the first time in her life, she is scouting out a Democratic candidate to vote for.

“I’m still a conservative. I don’t want somebody who says Medicare for All [public health insurance] and we’re gonna rip everybody’s guns apart. I actually like Pete Buttigieg. He would be my pick if there was a primary right now because he sounds intelligent and he’s a veteran. I like a military man,” she said. “When I said this about Pete Buttigieg to my sister, the first thing she said is: ‘Well, he’s gay. It’s an abomination.’ So is it OK to have relations outside your marriage with another woman? So what about Trump? When I throw that back at my sister all she says is, ‘He’s gay though.’”

Yeah, I know Kerry's loss in 2004 hurt him a lot. He probably did himself a favor by not sticking around to see the god damned poo poo show we have now and I often wonder what he would have made of Obama. By all accounts he was an absolute mess near the end and the piper had called to get paid for years of drug and alcohol abuse but I miss his voice, his intelligence and his sense of humor. For someone as self destructive and as deep into addiction as he was, he was remarkably prescient and offered great reporting and insight into the roots of this madness as planted by Vietnam and Nixon, cultivated by Reagan and harvested by Bush after 9/11,

He went off the rails with 9/11 trutherism though

I feel like Trump’s frequent use of that story at rallies is one of the most ominous things about him, as he generally seems to lack both the self-awareness and ability to understand metaphor necessary to understand why he would want to include that story in his rallies.

Like, it’s the villain taunting the world while getting away with his scheme, but the very qualities that make him villainous preclude the ability to be able to taunt the world in that way.

It’s uncanny, I mean to say.

My wife and I like watching lovely TV, and there's a show on MTV called Ghosted - it's a reality show about tracking down people that have ghosted others. Anyways, the latest episode is about a girl looking for an old friend from college, who suddenly cut off all contact with her. Eventually they track the friend down, and surprise! The friend (a black woman) ghosted her (a white woman) because ol' whitey is a trump supporter. White girl defends herself with "well, my family owns a steel mill, I don't like trump but his policies would be good for them" to which the friend responds "and trump said horrible things about the country my family comes from. You say you don't like him, but did you vote for him?" and I think you all know what the answer was.

Extra own was her crying because she didn't want to publicly admit she voted for trump lol.

(yes I realize it's probably 100% scripted and not actual reality, but still)
