It's used primarily to convince backers and keep them on their side, and would be a nice bonus if it has ever dissuaded anyone from taking legal action.

A fun anecdote to contemplate the next time some commando trots out that “they were setting up the new studio for two loving years” bullshit. A boss at my work quit about two months ago to found a tech startup with a partner. It was an idea that they’d been wanting to try and get off the ground for years. In the two months since my boss left they have: - Secured financing - Moved into an office space - Furnished the office, purchased hardware, licensed software, etc. - Retained legal counsel, and contracted financial and HR specialists - Started writing their software - Started hiring I assume they’re wizards or possibly satanists.

eh, pre-citcon slowdown on actual development is due to them shifting into crunch time for creating the one-off demo build that they'll dispose off as unusable and non-viable a day after. Sandiworm here we goooooo-- hey that sand grain should be green not blue. (CInoG devs don't overwork yourselves!)

Not only did CIG have around 100 employees by the end of the first year, hundreds of other people were working on Star Citizen by then, and most of that work had to be thrown out due to poor planing and the lack of oversight. Also games often have lengthy pre-production phases in which small teams lay the groundwork while a studio focuses resources on other more mature products. So most of those “10 year long” dev cycles they love to cite, are inflated with years of initial design work being done by a dozen or so people; and since Star Citizen still hasn’t even been designed yet after 7 years, the comparison is doubly ironic. But yeah, it’s early days commando! Chris is still picking out office furniture at an LA area IKEA as we speak. colonelwest fucked around with this message at 07:58 on Oct 13, 2019 |

The one thing to note is, every game company that didn't start off as a subsidary of an existing game publisher had to start from somewhere. IronicDongz posted:why the hell would it look like this Because Chris is still stuck in the nineties. I remember one of the official Quake 2 expansions where the very first door...rotated! Like into the ground! It made absolutely no sense, but it did something that wasn't possible with the Quake 2 engine before that expansion, and of course the battle for the most complex door opening animation was on between the map makers. I admit I also sat there with an open mouth and thought "that thing rotated like nothing ever rotated before in Quake 2". Chris is still stuck in that competition, to one up the other guy with his awesome door-opening-animation. Who needs sound game mechanics of he has a door animation that probably took 14 days to create. e: thinking about it, it was actually Quake 1!

I can't remember the name of that one bot programmer (IIRC it was the guy which then helped id software out with the Quake 3 bots), but his bots blew my mind because it was so much fun playing against them, and I could play deathmatch for hours (which was not possible before because the dialup costs were really high back then, and I only had a really lovely modem). They also didn't need waypoints on the maps, and it was so much fun playing them. It also reminds me of LAN parties and how heavy CRT monitors are...and buying my first five port 10mbit ethernet hub for something like 100 deutsche mark. Good times

In the two months since my boss left they have: I work at a 50 year old social housing NFP, and in the last year we've done a complete database replacement for our property services, we've tendered new databases for our Social care programs and HR, looking to go live early 2020 for both, we've started multiple care programs, and on top of that, we've been moving to a new building that dwarfs anything that CIG squat in (probably even all of CIG's buildings put together), we've rolled out an agile workplace practice (not the BS agile CIG tout), and we've kitted every single member of staff (700 or so people at any one time) with either a laptop or tablet to replace their desktops. For the duration, we've been business as usual. The only downtime we've had was on the test servers that we use for training, and that's only because they were being used for non anon data linking projects. CIG are full of poo poo. The fact that commandos believe their excuses is just sad.
