According to the people I've met with (larger) boats, you have to factor in 10% of the purchase price per year in terms of maintenance, crew, etc. I mean, I knew a $12 million Swan was out of my league by around $12 million, but it's crazy to realize that even if someone gave me the boat, I'd have no way of running it for even a year. GWM: I met a couple where one is the captain and the other is the chef/steward, but they don't have to pay income tax as they're living on the boat full time (they're not American). On top of that, all their expenses are paid for, so you have people making six figures, no income tax, no expenses. Downside is you live on a boat almost the entire year.

A yacht captain and chief stew making six figures? That seems... high. All the yacht jobs I’ve been offered paid absolute poo poo (and it was like 11 months a year, wherea cargo boats were six months a year) Boats are loving money pits that you barely ever get to enjoy.

Why does the chef have to make so much stew on the yachts?

There was a Goon who wanted to live year-round on a boat, so he posted asking about it, and a bunch of other Goons were like, "I live/d on a boat, don't live on a boat," and the Goon was like, "I'm only 25, and I don't want to miss the chance to live on a boat while I'm still young," and the boat Goons were like, "I lived on a boat when I was young, and it aged me prematurely, cost me hair, gave me three types of cancer and bankrupted me," and the first Goon was all, "Yeah, I think I'm gonna live on a boat." It was a good thread.

If I recall, he was in a cold place where it meant the boat would be inhabitable for 3 months of the year due to the extreme cold of the water and he still didn't think it would be an issue. They even tried to warn him off by pointing out that he'd never get laid on a boat (no date would want to wear 3 sweaters and poo poo in a bucket on a first date)

FrozenVent posted:A yacht captain and chief stew making six figures? That seems... high. I don't have anything to compare with, other than talking to the boat owner's long time lawyer, but apparently the captain was well over $100k/year and his wife around $50k. It's a 90ft sailboat boat that gets raced too, so that may have something to do with it. The race crew who come on during a race are ~$3k/person/day, plus room and board, but I don't believe they spend more than a few weeks a year racing. From what I've seen, racing rare supercars would be 10x more GWM than owning a large boat.

Yeah a racing captain would make 100k, regular motor yacht is more like 70k at best. For reference, cargo / tanker ship captain from a first world nation would be roughly 150-200k / year. Working on yachts: bad with money, bad with life.

My old boss used to opine that he wanted to by a boat that could comfortably sleep his family of 5 (three teenage boys and wife) so he could use it for vacations to save money instead of buying airfare and hotels when they travel. I realized it was a disagreement that I couldn't win, so I just nodded and said "sure, sounds like a reasonable idea."

On boat chat: My wife's coworker and her husband? The ones that bought that 24 foot yamaha jet boat and new F150 to tow it? Turns out it's a giant PITA to not have your boat in a marina/on the water constantly, so they only used it twice this year. We were on it once. Residency Evil posted:On boat chat: It's almost affordable to do out of a marina. It's ridiculously expensive (above the monthly slip rent) to actually keep it in a marina. Unless you own property with waterfront and your own dock you have almost no chance of using a boat of any reasonable size. I got rid of my 18' bay boat (or was it a 20 or 22? I have no idea at this point) that lived on a trailer in my barn and have enjoyed the gently caress out of my 8' basically row boat with a 4 HP Yamaha outboard on it. It's plenty to fish off of in the river, and I still wouldn't actually use it unless I could keep it on the shore/in the water at my friend's place (again, back to have water frontage if you expect to use your boat). I'm considering downgrading to a fishing kayak for even more enjoyment now that I live further from where I can keep it. Something I can throw on a roof rack and carry down to anyplace sounds about right. This is all a tale as old as time I'm sure. There are few ways to be a passive boat owner. It's your one thing or it turns out just like that (also see: plane ownership) Motronic fucked around with this message at 02:53 on Oct 18, 2019 |

Hoshi posted:I feel like this is about the Minnesota houseboat goon? Probably. Guess what? Goons in that thread were wrong. You can live on a houseboat year round in Minnesota. An old roommate of mine does. His boat "freezes in" in the winter. Some run air bubblers around their boats to keep ice from forming. Others get hauled out and spend the winter on the hard. It doesn't sound pleasant though. It's cold as gently caress and you need to get the boat shrinkwrapped. That's what trapped in the carbon monoxide that nearly killed him and put him in the hospital for a few days. Oh, and at his marina, you'll probably need waders to get from your car to boat during the spring.

Also remember he was going to keep a dog on the boat while he was at work. During the winter he'd have to heat the boat all day and night to keep his dog alive and a restless canine with a space heater on a boat that's about 90% wrapped for the winter sounds fantastic and not a cautionary tale to be told around camp fires.

My favorite quotes from the houseboat OPquote:The girlfriend will come around once she see's how cool the boat will be, that I'm not worried about. The bank is a bigger issue since I need some sort of financing to get this boat and start sleeping onboard the SS Savings. I guess I could take out a personal loan even at %7 and then just use my yearly bonus and tax return to pay that down more come this March. I'm in the process of contacting boat oriented loan companies, hopefully something good will come up through them. quote:Second update, I've been on a month to month lease for a while now. Finally my buildings management company gave me a form that basically said resign a year lease or pay $150 extra a month to stay month to month. That seemed completely unreasonable to me. I need a few months still to get a boat and need all the money I can get. So I took their form, scanned it, and changed it to only be $10 a month more, then signed it and handed it back. I got a VERY angry sounding voicemail from the building manager and have a meeting with them later this afternoon. I could be out a place all of the sudden and really need to find something quick. Hopefully I can get any type of house boat on an interim basis until I can secure a permanent one. quote:They didnt have it singed or anything like that. It was just a form letter with my apartment number filled in and date to respond by. So I just took it and changed the amount, not fraudulent at all. If I'm expected to read every long winded legal agreement they send out they should have to read everything too. quote:Whew I need to calm down a bit. I'm flying high right now. Basically HE DIDNT READ MY FORM and turned it in to the management company! Hahahaha I'm still getting a chuckle out of this. So they're going to honor the agreement! Even better there is a two month notice period that either party has to give to end the agreement, so the earliest they can give me the boot is the last day of March! The size of the vein on the dudes forehead was so big you could plucked it right off with some chop sticks. Hahahaha I hornswaggled the poo poo out of him. That said he made it very clear that he would make absolutely certain that I never sign a lease there again or with any other building managed by the company. quote:I dont live in a houseboat yet and that sucks. I also have been scrambling to find a place to live short term in the interim as well thats fairly cheap. Having a dog makes finding an apartment complicated. quote:Status is this: quote:I found a much shittier apartment that the girlfriend and I both hate. It's $200 a month cheaper but seems run down. Guess I'll see how it goes.
