i prefer bulleit to buffalo trace but the latter is fine. i'm sad, my local mini asda tried and failed to develop a burbon section and as such there were a bunch that got slashed down in price. i consulted a Kentuckian friend of mine and on his advice bought their entire supply (6 bottles at £10 a pop) of old forester. i've been drinking it for months and am finally down to my last bottle :(

Between Asda and Tesco you can generally get a pretty reasonable selection of bourbons. Far more than 'specialist' shops like majestic wines for some reason. And they almost always seem to have a couple of quid off either Bulleit, Makers Mark, Buffalo Trace or Woodford Reserve. Old forester is good too but doesn't seem to have any staying power, I remember finding some marked down from £30 to £20 in Tesco because they were trying to get rid of it.

Crispchat has now been replaced by boozechat. No gin allowed.

Fake Edit: Rye whiskey has started to be a thing in the last couple of years too. Bulleit Rye is gold tier.

Actual Edit: E.164 is an ITU-T recommendation which defines the public telecommunication numbering plan used in the PSTN and data networks. This seems vaguely relevant given all our phones are going to die in a (surprisingly not Brexit related) apocalypse caused by the Ofcom Yahoo Group shutting down.

No, that's not a joke.

He wants to kill this thing altogether in the weekend votes so that Johnson can't wriggle out of the Benn Act. Further down that thread, it mentions he wants to bring in a ref2 amendment next week.

To the point that last year I got into it with a friend who always does that "Kill the jews! Ha ha ha. You know I'm kidding right? I don't mean that. But Jews eh?" I said there was no room for ironic antisemitism, he said I needed to get a sense of humour, I pointed out how much that sounded like something a genuine racist would say, we kind of fell out.

He genuinely didn't seem to understand that you can't tell racist jokes and then say it's ok because you aren't really racist. But weirdly, actual racist, family in law gammons etc who are fine having a go at immigrants, black rappers etc, I never hear poo poo from them about Jewish people. Campaigning for remain on the basis that the proposed deal just starts a long transition seems like it would do well then
This is a really good point to make clear to anyone who says this - voting leave does not mean it ends on the 31st. It means the news will then be about the trade deals, the negotiations to enter new international agreements, the nhs under threat from the US, recriminations from other countries, border camps full of refugees, and endless loving farage on the telly for at least a few more years.

Vote remain, and it sends a clear message that the assholes are in the minority. We now know there's no sensible way to get it done - Boris couldn't do it, May couldn't do it, I doubt even the absolute boy is going to be able to negotiate anything better than membership.

If the extent of their political engagement really is that they just want it 'over with,' they need to vote remain and encourage anyone else who says the same.

The only way Johnson can avoid the Benn act is if his deal passes.

Promising Labour MPs that they won't face sanction for voting for it, so they can swan around their constituencies at election time bragging that they delivered Brexit, in no way helps 'kill this thing'. The only way its killed is if Labour MPs vote it down on Saturday.

In less Brexit-related news, it looks like people are actually starting to take seriously the fact that children in care are barely cared for at all.

quote:

Every children's home in Middlesbrough is set to have its own police presence part of a major shake-up in the way the town looks after youngsters in care.
As part of a £2.7m government-funded scheme, the council plans to create smaller "residential hubs".
Each will be staffed with its own on-site police officer or PCSO, as well as a speech and language therapist and a clinical psychologist.
[...]
According to a report from North Yorkshire Council, "quantifiable evidence" showed the system had produced an 11% drop in the number of new children having to be looked after by the state, a 38% drop in arrests, and 68% fewer cases of missing children.

Not entirely sure about calling plastic coppers "police officers", but if it reduces the incidence of children in care going missing it sounds good.
Also good to get clinical psychologists and speech and language therapists in the scheme, although I'd be interested to see how much time's allocated for each. Again, though, good stuff.

If that happens remain being hosed should be a surprise for no one. One side of the issue would be backed by a major party, the Tories, and pushed by most of the media. Non alcoholic fatty liver disease, i.e. your liver is hosed because you're too fat. The especially fun part is that the studies explicitly exclude people who drink heavily, which is obviously another strong factor towards developing liver disease. So goons are fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucked.

Note those two articles I posted are six years apart. Nothing has changed. Very few people not already visibly affected are aware. If it wasn't for an ultimately unrelated neutrophillic vasculitis outbreak (the cause of which is still undiagnosed three years later) I would never have had a FibroScan at age 28 and been told I was soon to die of Cirrhosis.

p.s. to the NHS nurse who did the initial FibroScan and gave me that diagnosis, that left me physically shaking in my car wondering how to drive home; gently caress you, and the system, and the complete lack of pastoral care provided for confronting my own mortality. Fortunately when I went back after six months of not drinking it changed from 'sudden death' to 'mild fibrosis'.

p.p.s Not really gently caress you, she was a nice lady and compassion fatigue is a real thing. But goddamn am I fortunate I was able to afford to pay for a private GP to break down in tears to rather than having to wait three weeks for an appointment with my NHS GP.

p.p.p.s Okay much oversharing at 1am in the UK politics thread, but on the plus side at least it's pushed me towards donating blood as often as possible which I wouldn't have even thought about five years back. Turns out semi-frequent jabbing with needles makes you less frightened of them.
