Thinking about that tory "hospital building" policy.

Do we even.. need more hospitals? Cos round here we've got loads of hospitals, most of them very underutilized. Is the rest of the country crying out for more hospitals or is this just an excuse to bung more public money at building contractors for hospitals that will never be staffed?

Considering the majority literally aren't being built and they're just bunging money at developers and hoping I'm surprised I've not seen that line anywhere.

Many moons ago when I worked in the NHS, a certain J Saville wanted to donate several £m to build a new children's hospital in I think it was Peterborough. The relevant Health Authority said thanks but no thanks having the hospital would be nice but we simply can't afford to staff and run it. Mr S was going to run to the media about them not accepting a new hospital. Not sure why he didn't. Obviously everyone rather glad now!
If by "build new hospital" they are going to replace old Victorian buildings and incorporate new technology that's one thing but just to chuck up new buildings without resolving many staffing issues is another.
I'm just considering these kind of statements as synecdoches. (Hospital as shorthand for services and staff).

Given that I recall the tores mentioning "seed funding" for the majority of the hospitals I'm fairly sure they don't mean services and staff :v:

If you treat gambling like finance it gets a lot more interesting.

Also, in better news the greens I know will be voting Labour if Greens withdraw from seats for the LDs. Anecdotal, but I imagine a lot of Greens value not voting for a fracking puppet over Brexit.

The Liberal Democrats are taking legal advice on their exclusion from a ITV leaders debate featuring Boris Johnson and Jeremy Corbyn.

"The debates cannot be leave versus leave," Lib Dem leader Jo Swinson said in a press conference outside the Houses of Parliament this afternoon.

Ms Swinson also said that it was "sexist" to have a debate with only men.

The Liberal Democrats have already made a formal complaint to ITV.

What is this absolute nonsense? How can you sue someone for excluding you from their own TV shows. We're outside or purdah and even if we weren't there's no legal requirement for leader debates.

Also if there should be a third party it's obviously the SNP.

It gets better worse

quote:

Lib Dem leader Jo Swinson said broadcasters who did not include her in their planned TV election debates were either “sexist, scared, or both”.

Ms Swinson, who was surrounded by more than 30 women MPs outside Parliament, said it was important that "for the girls and young women across our country they see that women can be political leaders and prime ministers too".

She told reporters: "It is so important in 2019 that our Parliament and our politics properly represents the country that we are here to serve."

She added that the debates "should not exclude the only woman leader who is able to be the next prime minister".

We literally had a female Prime Minister a few months ago. And you will not be the next one, Jo.
